Minor point first: "Thielen" does not sound Scandinavian to me, and I'm Swedish. Much to my surprise though, there's actually 22 people named "Thielen" in Sweden, but that doesn't make it a typically Swedish name in any way. My guess is it's not a common Norwegian or Danish name either. So anyway...

Guessing the colour of somebody's skin from the way their name sounds has to be the most ridiculous idea I've heard for a long time. People marry, get adopted or just plain change their name all over the place. Just among the people I know that are Swedish for at least two generations back, I can find names from all over the world. I'm sure Swedish names are all over the world too, carried by people of all colours.

And just in case you're really far out there -- far from all Scandinavians and Germans are white, you know.

It wasn't fun either to see huge amounts of reindeer and elk meat go to waste. But that will never happen again, never ever.)

However, the mining of the fuel for nuclear plants is *very* polluting in many ways. And to shrug off the waste as a non-issue is really stupid too.

Being on a major label gives them the opportunity to reach far more people than they would otherwise do. To them, I think it is more important to get their message across to as many people as possible, without caring about if their listeners know what labels, clothes and bands you must prefer to be a real punk/revolutionary/anarchist/vegan/whatever.

As for oi bands wanting to stomp the shit out of Chumbawamba, try Oi Polloi. Crass wouldn't stomp the shit out of anybody, and they're even less likely to reunite, whatever the reason.

Back in the good old days when I was a punk (like full gear punk, hanging about town being obnoxious, I still listen to most of the music but I've since gotten a hair cut etc. Hmm, let me see, yeah, close the paranthesis and get on with it). I liked The Exploited quite alot until I heard a live recording of the song "I Hate You" where Wattie Buchan says "This song is dedicated to Yello Biafra because he's a fucking faggot. It's called I hate fucking you". Since It's a really crappy recording I haven't been able to understand why they hate Yello, but there you go.

Why I don't hate Yello Biafra is because he has a lot of good things to say, and he says them in a really way that makes me feel like "oh yeah, that is so fucking true, why can't I express myself like that?".

I think he's made himself unpopular among punks because he points out all the hypocracy and bullshit about being punk the right way that goes on. And he does it in the not so very gentle Yello Biafra way.

And for the record, I think The Dead Kennedys and The Exploited both made damn good punk _music_.

    So given that
    a) You don't live near the uranium mines, or are in any way dependent of the nature surrounding it
    b) there are no more nuclear power plant accidents, ever
    c) you don't live near the place all the waste ends up at (and don't worry about all the things that can go wrong with it for the next couple of thousand years)

I too did not like that statement. As if the Spartans had failed, we'd still be living in the dark ages, or what? The ideas from greece at the time that have helped form the "Western Civilization" of today would have survived anyway. And the Persians sure did their part forming those ideas too.

The evolution of civilization isn't a battle between ideas were one has to defeat all the others. They are endlessly merging and influencing each other. (Cultures aren't proprietary, they are more like Free software, to make this post fit for /. =)

It is impossible to keep foreign ideas out. Just look at China before the brits came. Or Soviet, or what is happening in China today. And given the widespread fear of Islam that's poisoning the Western countries today, I find such a statement rather disturbing. (Of course I know the Persians weren't Muslims(sp?), but I think you can see the connection.)

I think the "Western Civilizations" really would be better of if they had borrowed a bit of the view on other religions from the Islamic empire of medeival europe.

And I put "s around "Western Civilization" as I, like Ghandi, think it would still be a good idea.

I hadn't taken more than a few steps before someone of the crew came running after me and started yelling all sorts of stuff. He said they'd have to take it off the ship and blow it up if they found unattended luggage. Pretty scary.
