Whenever there's a demonstration or some sort of protest which leads to a riot, the reporting is something like "...a demonstration that got out of hand. The crowd started smashing windows, setting fire to things and throwing bottles at the police. The police responded with teargas and batons."
Always the crowd did this, the police responded. Unless, of course, the riot took place in Yugoslavia or Iran, where the regime, and therefore the police, are BAD, as we all know. Then it's the other way around, and it's all rigt to say that the police attacked the crowd and started randomly beating up people, and some people threw rocks back at the police.
Sure, and the cost of that is nothing but the death of tens of thousands of innocent Guatemalans, Vietnameese, Jugoslavians, Iraqi, Colombians... The list can go on.
And don't try the bs that they all had to die to protect democracy and freedom. Cause the US don't mind murderous regimes, as long as they play along nicely. Like Iraq, Turkey, Indonesia, The Talibans of Afganistan, Pre-Castro Cuba, Cambodia, pre-revolution Iran... Again, just to name a few.
If that is what it takes to uphold our way of life, I'd very much like to change my way of life right away.
Nerd has become a swedish word too. With pretty much the same meaning. Though the spelling has been swedefied to "nörd".
It sound as swedish as any other swedish word, almost to the extent that one can understand it just from the way the word sounds. (You know when you make up a word and someone else immediatly "feels" what it means, that sort of thing).
Geek doesn't work nearly as well. Nothing but a weird sound. And it would be spelled "gik". Too silly.

What I regard as the most important thing about unions I've never seen mentioned here on Slashdot. That is Solidarity. Basically, I'm pro-unions because that's a very simple, effortless way of supporting most people that surrounds me.
Sure, I might not be in a need of a unions at the moment. But I'm here for the people that might not be as lucky as I am right now. And so I can count on them being there for me should I ever need their help!
Being backed by a union can be of great value, that I now from what friends of mine have told me.
Think of it as an IRC channel for Linux support! I might hang out there all day hoping to be of help to someone. Even though I do not myself need any help, at the moment, I know I will be very glad the channel is there should I run into trouble.
If everybody thought "A linux support channel? I don't need no goddamn help, I'm a hacker!" there would be no such channels.
So if you're not doing it to help other people out, do it to help yourself!
If it's a fizzle, well, what the heck. They might find out what they wanted to. Great.
If it really does end the world, swallow the earth and kill everyone, like, who will be sorry? Nobody will be able to blame the poor fellas who started it. We'll all be dead, so what. (Unless, of course, some sort of afterlife exists, and the premises of that afterlife does not rule out lynchings)
Or, we end up with something really cool and unpredicted, like a small, not that very dangerous black hole or something that maybe is sort of useful. Imagine watching a tiny black hole swallow your pizza cartons!
As I've understood this matter (I'm merely an outside observer) people from the United States put another meaning to 'getting pissed' than people from the British islands.
Personally, i prefer getting pissed the british way.
Starting a guns discussion here might not be that wise, but 'ere we go...
Actually, I think the number of people shot is a rather linear function of the number of guns out there - legal or not. Here in Sweden we hardly have any gun related deaths at all. And I think that is because we don't have many weapons, besides hunting rifles. Not that many people bring a hunting rifle to the disco, do they?
If someone is caught packing a revolver or something they can probably be sent to jail for it. It's not like it's impossible to get a license for a hand gun, we just don't have that gun culture. So hardly anyone is armed.
Now if only we could get our army to securely lock up their automatic weapons, and actually get some sort of control for the hunting weapons we'd have even less of a problem.
I find it very tragic when the best way to stop your kids from blasting each other's brains out you americans seem to come up with is more religion in school. Not taking the guns off the street, no, some prayers and ethics pushed upon them in school will fix it all.
I can't think of any other country more secularised (sp?) than Sweden, and still we manage to not blow each other to bits. No matter how much religion we'd be teaching in school, if every other fellow started carrying guns like in the states, I'm sure we'd have alot more people shot to death.
I feel safe not carrying a gun, as I know hardly anybody else does it.
Of course, Lara doesn't look real enough yet, but that is because the technology needs to be upgraded a few notches first.
Ehm, lack of technology is not the reason Lara looks unreal. She'll never look real until the "artists" or whatever are given some education in human anatomy.
Anybody remember those generator powered headlights on bikes? Remember how hard it was to pedal whenever you tried to use it?
My generator don't add any noticable resistance at all. If it didn't make an annoying sound I'd never remember to turn it off in the daytime.
Don't know about your neighbourhood, but in my whereabouts everyone uses the generator kind. I'd really hate run out of batteries late at night, especially since it could get me fined.
That reminds me of a study I read of, here in Sweden. According to the study, 90 per cent of the interviewed drivers considered themselves to be better drivers than the average one.
What do you think coke's largest expense is? It's not the water or the sugar, so it's most likely advertising, right? Coke would be goddamn cheap if it wasn't for all the ads.
And would you really pay for all the crappy TV you watch, if you did it directly, instead of paying for it every bloody time you buy something? I don't think so. TV isn't cheap, and we are paying for the crap every day.
If it wasn't for all the commercials we could all buy stuff *much* cheaper. And we could chose what to buy based on our experience or someone's recommendation.
The good products would still be sold. The crappy and useless products would go away. TV companies would have to actually provide some content, instead of endless plugs filled out with commercials. Everyone would be happier.
Then they can't tell anyone that their OS sucks anymore, so they will have to find something else that's so much better than Linux, and those of us who are still using Linux will be the victims.
If you're a whistleblower then you go to the authorities or media who, in turn, should responsibly deal with the situation and your identity, you don't air your problems in a public forum anonymously. It won't fix the problems and it only stands to hurt the organization that has the problems, at that point your free speech is an act of aggression and not an act of whistleblowing. The only case where there may be no authorities is if it is the government you are blowing the whistle one but you're given explicit protection to speak against them. The Xircom case involves a pseudowhistle blower who lacked any responsibility, you should get in trouble for that.
In Sweden, where I live, it's actually illegal to try to find out who has anonymously given information to the media. That's a great law, IMO.
No matter if you're a government official or whatever. (Though I think there's an exception for 'military secrets that would danger the nation' or something like that.) So if I'm a, say, police officer, I can go to the press saying 'Some of the policemen use the tax payers' money to pay whores!'. It would be illegal for the journalist to reveil my name to anyone, and it would be illegal for anyone trying to find out my name.
Of course, if there's no truth in the accusation it might be a crime. But the crime is that of the journalist not checking the story enough. So the publisher goes to jail.
Though it haven't been tested in relation to the EU yet... My guess we won't be able to stick up for this principle.
Ok, but the damage can occur pretty fast also and not be recoverable. Take the case where some AC posts lies about a company where a lot of e-traders prowl and then the stock gets run up until the lie is revealed and then the stock drops down below where it was before.
Sure, the dolts that trade on these rumors and get burned deserve what they get for being stupid. But what about everyone else (including the employees with savings plans/retirement accounts) that get screwed over because their company's reputation is damaged because of this incident?
I think the reason for this lies within the way the stock market works today. Ie. rumours and lies can mean a lot, as "everybody else will listen to it". And it's what everybody else is doing that matters, whatever the reason might be.
