When talk of robotics began many years ago, the biggest reason for not implementing them, at least as far as the government was concerned, was the lost income tax revenue. Once governments start taxing robots at the rate of all the workers they are replacing, we just might see companies like Foxconn change their mind. Worker unrest is something that China doesn't need, in fact it's one of their government's biggest fears.

The Daily Mail has lots of stuff on the 'scandal' but, well, it's the Daily Mail. Mother Jones calls it an "IRS scandal that isn't". Good point though about there not being any mainstream newspapers with the story. I think the IRS could do us all a favor and take away Fox's 'news' classification. More of a cult than a news organization.
Coincidentally, I just wrote about this today. There are many hosting companies who offer unlimited storage plus unlimited domain hosting/email/etc. Costs are probably less than one hundred bucks with no hardware expenses. Everyone would use FTP, they'd have their own folder with a password, etc. If they are all fairly tech savvy then FTP is a breeze. Have one or two people control the account using the CPanel and make regular backups. Your material is as secure as the hosting company plus you could use your own encryption, if necessary.
Odd that the number of employees is mentioned, to me anyway. What would happen if even one of those 16 was disgruntled, or whatever Snowden was? If the 20,000 sq. ft. warehouse, not that big at all, is just as secure as the NSA office where he worked, then another leak seems imminent.

I've been looking for a parallel to American society for quite a while. "Bread and circuses' fits perfectly. I guess I ignored it because some idiot politician in Toronto used it when we wanted to host the Olympics. Now, years later, it seems more fitting than it did then. For many communities in the U.S., the biggest fear is that their high school/college football team might lose on the weekend. Little do they know that there are far bigger fears than that. Blame 'bread and circuses' for the fact that they don't know.
I know, everyone hates Dell but I've had a 3010CN color laser for years, perhaps five or more, printed 8800 sheets and it's still chugging along. Toner is $45, much less than for the Brother or Samsung mono printers I got for the kid's uni days, and last at least 2,000 sheets. The thing has Ethernet, weighs a ton but is always there when I need it. Never printed much in color and won't pay the price for the replacement color toner either but it's there if I need it. By the way, the first toner lasted for 3300 sheets, must have been extra capacity.
There's a move on here in Toronto to get the police to report 'door prizes' as accidents. Once this starts, people may realize that cycling in the city isn't as rosy as it seems, at least not if there are cars sharing the same streets. Toronto is about as backward as a city can get on this while Montreal, more European perhaps, is ahead of the curve. Given that Montreal has much more intense winters than Toronto, it should be the other way, you'd think.
My utopia would have every second or third street devoted to bikes, no cars allowed. It won't happen but it'd be nice.
When Americans found out that Johnson was lying about the war in Vietnam, the reaction was pretty much the same. He was deemed a traitor, just as Snowden is now. I swear that things like Friday Night Football, pro sports, college football etc, matter to people more than just about anything else in life. You'd never get 100,000 people out to support a cause on a regular basis but that happens in cities across the U.S. every week. Add to that Survivor/DWTS/Idol etc, and you've got the same drugged masses that we saw in 1984 or Brave New World, can't remember which. Then again, you have FOX news being the only source of information for millions of Americans, outright lying to them about everything. PBS Frontline told us all about the NSA back in 2011, including how it was scanning everything on the Internet, but how many people did more than switch the channel to something else? The blasé attitude allows things like this crazy government stoppage to happen. It's tough to watch from up here, that's for sure.

I've been collecting antique computers for years and the constant dilemma is that there's usually lots of hardware but not much in the way of manuals that describe how to actually use that hardware. You probably come across much older books/manuals than most would expect, back as far as the Apple IIs and Commodores. Personally, I value the manuals and books as much or more than the hardware they refer to. This doesn't answer your question but you might want to search out some collecting sites to see if anyone hoards this stuff. Vintage Computers in San Fran, not sure if they're still around, and others would be very interested, I think, but the problem remains how to get the two things together. People who shoot undercover videos of animal cruelty in stockyards are terrorists also, in many states, not just one. Can't you just smell the freedom?
The key words here might be 'using regularly sine 2010'. How often does anyone download their own data? Once a week, once a month or once in a while? Once a year might be average and sustainable by Facebook. My suspicion is that Facebook 'silently' removed that option from your account. Some people use it, some people abuse it, same as anything else. On the other hand, maybe you don't live in Europe or Canada and maybe, just maybe, there's something going on behind the scenes regarding your privacy and whether you can protect it or not. If you live in the U.S. well, that can't happen, right? Land of the Free? Hmmmm....

Nothing new there. They've been scanning your Skydrive account for years, long before it was Skydrive. Nothing is private in the cloud, that's for sure. If you're going to send a url, break it up with a few commas, see if that stumps the bots.
