  1. Those clever bastards on Microsoft Patents Package Management · · Score: 1

You can't buy Debian so make'em do something illegal so you have a right to sue the people behind the project. Pretty clever way to eliminate 500+ active communist-hippies and one of the toughest strongholds of the OSS movement. Jail is the right place for those little thieves. Nothing else won't make'em learn.

    Or maybe not.

    What's so special about it?
Here in Finland there used to be some "adult entertainment companies" that sent SMS spam. Somehow they managed to ban it, which was nice. I can't recall by whom the business was stopped, the authorities or the telecoms.
This happened far over a year ago if not two.

Are they going to integrate the code for the Netfilter modules into Linux 2.4 or do people need to download/compile/install separate Netfilter modules if they want to do some NAT'ing? Somewhere I read that the Netfilter team goal is to get it into 2.4 but the current version (0.1.18) doesn't even compile with kernel 2.3.51 source. I guess they have to hurry up if we want to have NAT support out-of-the-box for 2.4...

    Yes it is.
I guess you haven't tried Mozilla say 6 months ago. Current M14 is like from another planet if you compare it with M8 or older. They look like a bit same as it does now, but frankly, they weren't for real use. Now Mozilla is.
And not to mention the time (About a year ago, if I remeber right) before Gecko and GTK+.

    • Sun: After Solaris 2.6 came Solaris 7 and 8.

    • 2.7 doesn't look good when compared to 4.0 of WinNT.

    • Mandrake: The 1st version of their Linux distribution was 5.2 (if I remember right).

    • It's based on RedHat, you just can't have lower version number than RedHat's using.

    • Slackware: The next version after 4.0 was 7.0.

    • 4.x looks old since there already is "Linux 6.x" (aka. RedHat 6.x)

      And now
    • Netscape: Communicator 4.x to 6.x

    • Releasing 5.0 so many months after M$ released Internet Explorer 5.0, it just would look like ancient piece of software. But now, let's make it 6.0 - Hey, our browser is modern again!

I'd really like to play TeamFortress 2 with my Linux box.
We really need modern TeamFortress, not only for Linux but for whole 1st-person-3D-action scene, since TeamFortress Classics for Half-Life was such a desaster, the feel of TeamFortress was completely ruined.
Luckily there are at least two projects under developement whose goal is to create a TF-like Quake III Arena mod, namely Team Assault and Q3Fortress. I hope they manage to release something playable soon.
    TeamFortress rocks.

Also I think Linux needs some cool racing games, like Need For Speed.
There're some difficulities with this one, though.
AFAIK, not a single racing game uses OpenGL, they all are Direct3D or Glide (be sure to enlighten me if there're OpenGL based racing games).
Pain to port since no-one (except 3Dfx) wants to use Glide since its limited usability :(.

I really hope Loki takes this hint (though I don't think they decide which games are ported and which not, but anyway). Or anyone else who's capable of porting some cool racing games to Linux, preferably all you Slashdot-reading Electronic Arts engineers :) .

So GNOME 1.2 is coming (not that soon, though). And Linux 2.4, Debian GNU/Linux 2.2, FreeBSD 4.0, XFree 4.0, Mozilla and GCC 3.0 are on their way and probably they all are released before Q3/2000.

  14. Anybody still playing Quake I? Hell yeah! on Open Source Quake Causes Cheating? · · Score: 2

IMHO Quake I is still the number one realtime multiplaying game.
Okay, the pure deathmatch is quite stupid, but still it beats Q2, Q3A, Unreal and all the others. Quake I may not be as pretty as the games listed above, but Q1 feel and atmosphere is something that any other game haven't been able to achieve.
And because it's pretty old game, you don't need the latest 3D accelerator that supports transparent-bumbing-flare-with-5th-reality-and-a-k itchen-sink effect to play it.
Overall game-play is just something that they don't do anymore, which is a shame. For example no delays when changing weapons - not very realistic but fun, easy and efficient.

And not to mention those great mods like CTF and TeamFortress.
Playing Q2 and Half-Life ports of these mods just don't rise the same feeling as the original ones do.
For example when I first tried TeamFortress Classics for Half-Life, I thought it just was a bad joke by people with sick sense of humour. Playing TFC just felt horrible when compared to the original TF. The great balance between classes was ruined and smaller versions of great TF maps with ugly textures almost made me puke. Never again, thanks.

Apparently quite a many other people thinks this way, too. At least here in Finland playing Q1/QW is still quite popular. To check out the state of Q1/QW scene, just join some major Finnish QW server like Sonera's small.qw.edome.net for deathmatch or tfa.qw.edome.net for TF or some other server.
From 10AM to 10PM GMT+00 you even may encounter some troubles when joining a game on the most popular servers since at that time they often are full. Around 03AM GMT+00 they all are empty, though.

Quake was the first well-working action game with multiplaying using IPv4.
Quake will be the last well-working action game with multiplaying using IPv4.
Since whe have the source, we can add IPv6 support.
You can be an Internet2 user and still you can play Quake I.
    Quake One will never die.

Hey don't interrupt me now! What? What do you mean it's prohibted to patch their binaries? Well if they don't ask my permission to send this kind of data to their server, I won't ask their permission to disable that by patching the binary! And that's for sure.

(For those who don't know what's an NOP, it's an assembly instruction that does nothing, (N)o (OP)eration. Instructions that call the routine that sends out the information can be replaced with NOP's so the program never executes the send-info part. But this is an extreamly lame way to handle the situation, but it works.)
