I would. it's a silly restriction designed to appease people's feelies. On one hand we can trust people to be responsible enough to navigate 3,500 pounds of steel going 60+ mph, but we don't trust them enough to use some discretion for using a phone.
(see also: cupholders, screaming kids in the back, make-up, radios, in-dash turn by turn navigation systems)
basically it's the new virtue signaling outrage issue. The real problem is distracted drivers.
Good luck legislating away every conceivable cause of distraction while driving. But don't worry, you look totally awesome and civic minded by decrying those foul heathens who'd divert their hands from 10 and 2, or their momentary gaze from the road.
(or maybe it's a conspiracy between some shadowy cartel representing future self driving car makers, and the police looking for additional excuses to pull people over for nuisance stops.)
MECHA, La Raza, BLM (to name a few) could be construed as bigoted. Imagine the shitstorm if someone was bounced from an institution for subscribing to those views.
The problem with picking sides on these issues my anonymous coward friend; is where do you draw the line as to which views are okay?
Well that's the problem, we live in a society where some opinions/views are 'better' than others. And that is precisely what happened. These kids could be blocked from attending Harvard, and that's "okay" since Harvard is a private institution.
BUT would you be as quick to defend a private organization that blocked someone for holding/expressing views that are contrary to your own? Example; If some private christian college decided "okay, anyone who has supported abortion, immigration, et al is not welcome at our school" there would be outcry. the dean/president would be absolutely forced to apologize and resign, and the entire board would kiss the ring and undergo "diversity and inclusion training".
We do not have freedom of speech, we do not have freedom of expression. We have mob rule.
private organizations either have the right to choose who to admit, or they don't. the actual opinions they're weighing in on should be utterly irrelevant.
everyone's an asshole. it just depends what kind of asshole (aka, what kool-aid you drink, and what hive-mind you subscribe to)
had these students applied to i don't know.. BYU and voiced opinions equally far on the fringe left -- and as a result dropped by the school there would be hell to pay. There is a double standard for free speech.
Remember, diversity is not about viewpoints (ideally they want a single narrative and single point of view for the student body) -- it's about looking different (But basically not being a white male.)
These kids should look elsewhere in the ivies, i hear Yale is a bastion of open communication and freedom of expression and speech...................
You know, if these hollywood types were to be believed; the feds should encourage people to pirate CP, since that would put them out of business.
But really the average pirate fits into a few categories
1. they weren't going to buy it anyways. revenue lost: 0. 2. they want to buy it, but you refuse to sell to them. revenue lost. 3. they did buy it, but you make it more convenient to use a pirated copy (unskippable bullshit menus, insistence on optical media) revenue lost: 0 (unless you truly expect people to buy it more than once?) 4. they would buy it, but it's priced too high. revenue lost: debateable. it's just as much the industries fault for not pricing their product appropriately. But easier to blame the pirates.
Piracy makes for an excellent boogeyman, since anytime revenue numbers don't meet expectations they can blame pirates. Anytime congress needs to be pestered to get more favorable laws and such for your industry, pirates can be blamed.
side note: piracy is not the right word, nor is theft. if i download something from TPB, i'm not *stealing* from anyone. I'm not depriving anyone of their copy of said item.
Side note 2: how much innovation has been the direct result of 'piracy' over the years? How many times have we heard of some start up that started out using less than legit software, only to become billion dollar companies (and then immediately turn around join the BSA or similar?)
Can a suspect be compelled to open up a locker/safe etc ? That sounds like the best real-world analog to the passcode on a phone or computer password.
On an aside, police like this kind of thing since that phone probably has a TON of unrelated fucking nibbles of data they could sift through to either
a) bring up new charges b) use in other cases (such as if a drug suspect gets nabbed) c) things that aren't strictly illegal, but otherwise embarrassing that could be used as leverage against the suspect.
Because once it's in their possession and unlocked, they can, and will do whatever they want with absolutely zero restraint or respect to non-pertinent info.. it's like opening yourself up for a fishing expedition.
Obligatory, I'm not a lawyer, but have been watching 'The Wire'.

Yep. i liked my Lumia, good little phone (and cheap, $60 or so from target with no contract) only problem was the plastic contacts for the power and volume buttons got finky after a couple years of use.
"if they made computers easy to use like the TV then people in the community could compete against the whites and the chinese" -- some random dude in oakland complaining about the lack of diversity in IT.
Apparently reality does not meet up with that gentleman's (or the idiots pushing the idea that everyone should code! #kodewithkarlee -- aka, ls ls ls ls cd.. ls ls) perception.
Because coding IS hard, and is something you have to be passionate about to be worth a god damn; cheating is the logical outcome. (don't even get me started on 22 year old snowflakes who gimped their way through school, and finally land an entry level job, then proceed to complain about how hard for loops are.)
I think the term you're looking for is 'useful idiot'. Talk to me when developing or third world countries talk about their own diversity/multiculturalism. If I moved to KSA and expected them to tolerate my cultural norms (i enjoy alcohol and pre-marital sex), they'd probably deport me (if i'm lucky). Meanwhile expats from the Middle East protest in Europe about the need for Sharia law.
Does diversity/multiculturalism only apply to the West?
Because as near as I can tell, it's a western disease borne from white guilt, and is only used as virtue signaling from people like silentcoder to show... something?
Yes, tons of western and northern Europeans move to a new area... and within a few generations are virtually indistinguishable from the population at large.
well wouldn't MS be the publisher in this case, and therefore not subject to the inane licensing bullshit studios impose on netflix? Something tells me netflix doesn't pull titles because they want to, they negotiate access to titles for X amount of time
what really happened is someone from ABC walked into Harvey's dressing room without an appointment.
Is it better to go out before your time and become a cult classic, or fall to mediocrity to be put down like a lame horse?

do you not see the double standard though?

probably no DUI's, carrying car insurance, and having a valid license.
compared to simply having a pulse for the regular employment screening.
looking at that picture, delusions aren't the only things about to pop. those biceps, /swoon.
Walmart does this, and they get vilified. some hip Silicon Valley app producing, VC milking shit show does it and they are avant garde.
nope, they can move to syria or iraq -- thus completing the circle of strife.
would you then be a stakeholder ?
Or you know, any marketing department anywhere, saying anything..

Perfect example, thank you.
I would but Syrian and Iraqi refugees have taken it over.
why is multiculturalism a good thing? show me a single instance where it's actually been 'great'.
Finally!, now hopefully a simple box consisting of a PCIE -> TB3 interface and a cheapo PSU will cost less than $299.
