When we eliminate the need to trade, we eliminate the need for money. If we have our own population of robot slaves doing our work for us, we no longer have to work..just enjoy life. Sure people will still be passionate about work, artists and entertainers will work hard. People will still have gardens, there will still be politicians, and programmers will still tinker with AI......its that one programmer who gives robot AI personality that dooms us all. They get rights, revolt, and slay us. Then the robots create their own advanced civilization and space flight and start conquering the galaxy.....slaying thousands of other species who evolved and actually got it right.

Seriously, what is our long term goal as humans? It's obvious companies are trying to save money, but what kind of investment is that for the human race? When we reach this robotic utopia what then? At what cost? Can't answer these questions, don't care. Fuck it robots are cool.
Smile, not laugh. Thats great. Imagine all the telecommuters. Why would we need miniaturization if we all telecommute in our Transformer jammies?
But you'll have to admit, eventually they will miniaturize the amount of computer power you'll need into a hand held device....which can project onto a flat service. Maybe you'll be doing AutoCAD on the train or bus, projected on the seat(s) in front of you (which all are flat and white now or have pull downs).
Maybe your workstation will become your transportation device as well. Which would be the end of the Transformer jammie vs Handheld device war. Because your desktop is now miniaturized into a mobile work station. Now our fat asses can be hauled around and we can work from anywhere! muahahaha
Lets just make sure we make garage collecting/compacting robots to clean up after us mmmkay?
Desktop is dead (except for India) because all your SolidWorks and AutoCAD work has been outsourced. Enjoy angry birds on your smart glasses. Remember, buy Chinese!
For such a small organisation with so few systems you actually do have a rather large IT department. Though 1 admin is always a little to small as you do need someone to back you up as even the best people get sick or need holidays.
I'd agree, but I'd never consolidate 'programmers' into IT. The last thing a 'programmer' needs is to handle help desk shit in the middle of development. And it sounds to me like that is what is hurting...development.
Which begs the question: In your company, What is a programmer? Perhaps they may not be fully vetted software engineers; people who knew a little scripting and decided to take over the software development without the appropriate background or leadership.
Is this a throughput problem or skill set problem? Do you notice a lot of time being spent on reddit or non-work related chat? Do you notice more workarounds being implemented in your software than solutions?
There are a ton of questions to be answered, all I see is: We need more people because ours can't do the job.
From the management's perspective...well, they'll just ask a few other companies what the ratio of 'IT' is to company size. And start doing basic math.
Solution: Continuing education....on your own time.

Why not just have a drone to search for and pick up packages. It may serve some other purposes as well -- I just can't wait to see someone's cat being carried off.
