not a company. the FSF is an ORGANIZATION.... hence the.org domain
understand? there is a difference. It is harder to run a company. Companies need to make a profit, organizations generally don't. If a company fails to profit, its probaby screwed, unless its an internet company, which Wall St. seems to love...

Lets put it like this. Be Inc. and Microsoft both went open source tommorrow would you buy the cheapbytes CD(s), if you like those operating systems you would. but lets say theyt did go opensource and both strted to lose money because not enough people wanted that manual and tech support? Who would last longer? Be Inc. Or Microsoft? Microsoft has a huge cushion of cash to cover their losses, Be Inc.... not so much. Redhat has a pretty good financial standing, they can afford the losses by atracting corporate customers who want tech support. But companies like Be? absolutely not... and if they did open source but with a non-Debian compliant licence you would all crucify them for not doing so.
in a proper scientific experiment, there is only one variable, in this case it was (read should have been) the operating system. However, they also added the additional variable of IIS. They should have used Apache on both, then it would have been a proper comparison...
Columnists who say that are on a Microsoft pay roll...
C'mon didn't most (alot) of these guys also praise MS-DOS? Thats just as "text mode" as Linux. Just because you use a keyboard and not a mouse doesn't mean that it is arcane. If I want to read my mail, i can type... gee... guess what? mail! Most of this is trivial shit...
BTW, if you want to start x you would type startx if that is arcane then i'm Lee Harvey Oswald.

If he did, he would be very into closed source. Not that i care that much, but it sucks when you put all of your time and $$$ into R&D then release something as GPL and another company picks it up and sells it for a lower price... Your R&D cash is wasted and you make no profit because someone else is selling your product for USD$1.50. To a businessman it won't make sense unless the open source licence DOESN'T comply with those Debian rules.
It was called "the microsoft file" and it covered this shit pretty well.... i also found out that Stevie Jobs helped BillyG get out of a lawsuit with Apple while Gilly was still CEO
I have to wear ties to school (neckties) What i am looking for is a tie (maybe yellow?) with a big bad "Tux" on it. and possibly something with a/. also.....
I myself was considering slapping a "/." on the Ewing penguin, and calling it a logo, however, Slashdot isn't linux, Its readers might use linux, but it is News for Nerds, which is more general..
Jobs decided to choose NeXT (for whatever reason).
It would have been kinda hard for him not to choose next, after Apple bought NeXT, (his company) and hired him as an adviser and later as an Interim CEO and chairman.
Open Source means that anyone can see the source... BSD, GPL, and most other Open Source licences are open source.
As long as software is covered under BSD it is Free(free == freedom, not beer) because you are relatively unrestricted as to what you can do with it, you can reverse engineer it if you don't get source, even to the exent that you can redistribute the code as a closed-source project. That is freedom.
GPL, restrict you. You must remain open source under the GPL, and you must use GPL. This isn't neccesarily bad, and BSD isn't neccesarily good, it all depends on your personal opinion.
Restriction == Not Free Unrestricted == Free Open Source == the source is open.... (restricted or not)
you sure about that one??? I installed a "Preview" on my Gateway/win PC nd i'm sure it only took up 300mb or so. Albeit thats still a lot of space but... anyway, maybe i didn't install everything, but i installed most of it, all of the main apps (The Premium Edition) and most of the optional crap (the launcher-bar ect)... oh well..
...over the name "Number One ISP." Funny, the court ruled in favor of AOL even though AOL isn't even an ISP...
hmm... maybe thats because Judges usually hold their jobs for life, which means that an old guy could preside over a trial who doesn't know jack shit about the internet, other than "thats where the perverts go to look at naked women and try to defile my great-grandkids" so, they will beilieve that aol is an ISP.
My dad has a (multiheaded, cool as hell) Solaris workstation at his office.... So, Unix IS used as a workstation, but since most Idiots find the "start" button compelling, my dad, and many others are forced to have an NT crapstation running office right next to it...
By the way... Talking about NT, has anyone taken a look at reactos? it is supposed to be a clone of NT... Its also, not the first Opensourced OS attempting to run windows software. But this one seems to be progressing... (whereas previous attempts, have come to a standstill for, seemingly, a year now)
Nope, i remember reading in an offical MS document, MS licenced Unix from ATT, and ported it to x86, then they licensed (and eventually sold, i believe) Xenix to SCO.

Actually it was an offer of free (beer) BeOS to any Co. that altered ther "first boot" to start BeOS instead of Windows.
Whatever happened to the BeBox anyway???
hehe, my old Presario 486 only needed one disk!!!!!
Heres my take on it...
Open source backend (a modified linux) and a proprietary GUI frontend (borrowed from Be)
much like Mac OSX
I always thought apple lost money on MacOS, and their entire profit came from selling hardware.

I thought PalmOS was CE's main competitor... Anyway, i'm due for a new Palmtop anyway... (i'm still using the Psion 3a, which no longer fits my needs)
Does anyone know if these things sync with Linux?
And don't forget your tin foil hat.... I never take mine off. Those aliens... err electomagnetic fields, aren't gonna get me!!!!

I think I'll stick with my Sony Mavica....
#1 bites.... i never had that problem with KDE, but for some reason I stick with GNOME.... i'm dumb.
#2 is Netscape's Fault... don't expect it to get better... I'm waiting for a replacement...
#3 wouldn't know... you don't NEED to use Xconfigurator
Maybe it is VMS...
