The thing is there are many kinds of wizards. There are the apprentices, who know how to code a few lines, the adepts, who can program entire applications, then you get into the higher stuff, like master wizard et al.
Hell, just take out a D&D book and shamelessly rip out all the MU names. I'm sure TSR won't mind =)
Wizard is all but dead in common useage anyway, so why not? We do work in the black art of code. To the general observer, we create magic. And it is, in a sense. Who else can defy the laws of physics (as defined by the operating system) and make something appear from nowhere or take a short trip to/dev/null? We also are dealing with something that cannot be completely defined by scientific process. We're always seeing improvements on algorithms reminiscent of Melf's improved arrow or floating disc.
We're the guys who get things done because 99% of the world is made up of idiots.
We're the guys who make Linux drivers and write CPU emulation cores for MAME.
We're the guys who write the cool games like Moria and the myriad of MUDs out there.
We're the guys who frequently find ourselves looking at the ANSI C spec and various hardware reference manuals (the quality of which is steadily decreasing).
We're the guys who, upon buying anything that takes electricity, immediately disassemble it.
We're the guys who disassemble commercial code and then submit bug fixes to the software companies.
We're the guys who everyone leaves alone at work because we get the job done, and we work alone. (Unless there happen to be fellow hackers around, a true rarity in any company).
We're the guys who play games all the time at work and yet somehow manage to get everything done on time and in good quality even though we only work 8 hours a day (7 of which is spent playing).
We're the guys who come out of nowhere with a kickass app or game.
And the rest of the world just sits and gawks.
We have nothing against big projects. We have something against big projects full of big idiots.
We're not anti-business. We're anti-selling-crap-software-for-a-bloody-fortune.
We have nothing against requirements. They'd just better be sane.
I am also a true hacker. Personally I don't really care what people would call me. I'm usually called "How The Hell Did He Do That" or "Oh Can I Have A Copy" =)
> and believe that every bug can best be found using 'printf'.
Right on! Though I do use write(1, "ping\n", 5) and the like if I'm in an isr (especially if it messes with the PIC).
And I only use Windoze for Starcraft, dammit! *wishing he could use SC under wine and have battlenet support too!*

Hmm.. Volunteer Hardware/software re-architect... Kinda has a nice ring to it =)
There are very few computer gods left in the world today (Actually I suppose there never were many, it's just that more of the average joe is using a computer nowadays and thinks he can code).
------------------------ Quick man! Make me a J-K flip flop out of that tinfoil and chicken noodle soup over there! And don't forget the crackers!
Okay, I'm sure we're all painfully aware of the origins of hacker, but I'll say it anyway. (Who knows, maybe someone actually doesn't know this)
"Hacker" originally referred to the geeks who did a little dumpster diving outside of IBM, Bell, and Xerox, grabbing junked equipment and cutting off pieces of the circuit boards with a hacksaw. (Back when boards were mostly 1 layer, maybe 2).
It then progressed to someone who was really into programming, and was always experimenting with something or another. It then changed again because those people who liked to experiment with one thing or another also had a tendancy to want to know how things worked that others didn't want them to know.
Cracking is the art of getting into a protected system (program, network, etc). Hacking is the art of changing it to your own design (usually involving some reverse-engineering). Phreaking is doing it on phone systems.
How about wizards? It's used by the unix... wizards...
Uhh.. yeah.... Anyway,
Wizards were always known for their bookish style, their tendancy to mutter to themselves in some incomprehensible language about some thing they were experimenting on, about their dressing habits, their tendancy to be unaware of those in their immediate vicinity, their tendancy to be feared for what they could do if you made them mad =)
That movie's timing and content were by no means coincidental. (You can see how rough aroud the edges it was in places) I was surprised at how well it portrayed the sheer inaccuracies of governments in terms even an idiot could understand.
Ah, but you mustn't forget: Killing their communications is only the first step.
As long as the enemy has no face and no voice, anything you say about them will be accepted without question, and anything that happens to them they obviously deserved.
Have you noticed how horrible the korean and viet nam wars were? Have you also noticed how these were the first wars where journalists were present en-masse? Strange how people's views suddenly change when they see what's really going on at the other end of the gun.
The reason so many/.ers are up in arms over this is because this puts another brick into the propaganda wall that can just as easily lull us into accepting whatever our government wants us to believe. This will give said government lots of power. This will lead to a certain arrogance on the part of that government, and consequently, on their people. How goes the prhase? Oh yes... "Nuke the bastards!". The next step, of course, is to force local morals and ethics and ways of thinking on others. Gee.. actually, morals, ethics, and ways of thinking are what make up an ethnic group, aren't they? I'm surprised you don't see how close this comes to the final step of ethnic cleansing.
Never forget: We're all the same in the end.
I'm not saying anything in favor of what's going on in Serbia. I'm saying beware the hand that feeds you. Your interests are not the ones being taken to heart.
>There is big difference in a few isolated bigots attacking minorities and state sponsored persecution. >You'll notice that in the United States, the bigots are on trial and will be punished. >For all our flaws, we do not participate the activities that Hiltler practiced.
Oh really?
Is that why kids all over america are being detained, arrested, and censored because they wear trenchcoats or have anything "abnormal" to say? Isn't it strange how no one in america gives a fuck that these kids' rights, the very ones that America was founded upon and the very thing they hold the most dear, are being trampled?
The fact of the matter is that the US only participates in domestic squabbles IFF they have something to gain from it.
Think about it: Saddam Hussein was put into power by the Americans in order to secure their oil supply.
Hitler was named man of the year by Time magazine.
It's very interesting to see how the Americans were so interested in shutting out Cuba for being communist, while they openly embraced South Africa, who were deeply entrenched in apartheid. Hey, you know what? South Africa is the single largest producer of diamonds, and with all the "kaffer" labour, they can export them rather inexpensively. HMMMMMMMM...
The korean war The viet nam war Desert storm The war in the pacific All of these and more were economically driven. I haven't even mentioned what they did in southeast asia.
Isn't it strange how the Americans are using NATO (a purely defensive organization who are forbidden by their own charter from encroaching on non-member countries) for their attacks? Why not the UN? This would be UN territory IF there was a majority of the member countries in agreement.
BTW I can still read the Ygoslav pages from Japan.
What? Are you for real? I find it hard to believe such a situation would exist... In my school,we geeks were despised by all, including most of the teachers. We'd be the ones asking hard questions in class which the teachers would rather not deal with (they are for the most part very lazy, you see). I can still remember losing interest after grade 2 when I was on the honor roll for straight A's. Challenge met, no new challenges, BORING! I can only remember 2 teachers in my entire school career who actually cared a rat's ass to teach me anything . Even now my heart overflows with contempt for that pathetic institution they dare call education. My kids most certainly will NEVER go to public school.
I can still remember the pitiful sight I saw as I went to my first sci-fi club meeting at my highhell. It was the sorriest sight I saw. So many outcasts left in some corner hovel where they eek out some form of existance and share their love for D&D and Paranoia (my favorite!).
I was lucky in highhell because I was big, and so very few people tried to pick on me. (Some people tried at times, but I set them straight on that issue).
Is it just me or are others considering an all-out revolt against this kind of legal oppression?
Think about it... If enough people where to simultaneously up and say "screw you" to the legal system as it stands, what could the lawyers really do about it?
Sure, there'd be some hooplah and jailings (Cool... martyrs), but the ensuing chaos would have quite the cleansing effect (Assuming a sustained supporting stance by the populace), don't you think?
We can worry about the anarchy and lawlessness later =)
A rose by any other name.
Even so I doubt anyone would (could) get it.
We data communications experts are sometimes called bit bashers...
Took me way too long to learn not to give a shit what other people think.
My code has improved 15% too! (tm)
