    Are you kidding? There are tons of physicists out there, working at public and private labs, working in industry, or teaching at various levels.

    There are what, maybe a couple hundred professional basketball players?

    I would guess two orders of magnitude difference.

    You might not be a stephen Hawking or a Michael Jordan, but I would bet on physics as a more likely career path.

    I run vnc on my laptop with XP and linux on my desktop.

    x2vnc lets me hook them together without a KVM, so I just ues the desktop keyboard and mouse.

    I can't drag windows across, but it is sweet.

    One day, I want the new apple display, 30 inch, 2400x1600 woot.

    A lot of commercial linux software packages are like this. Matlab, Maple, Cplex...

    You get to copy the directory wherever you need it and softlink to whatever binary or libs you want.

    You may need to tweak an environment variable to make them work, but it works.

    Maybe they end up with bigger builds, as they have to include everything in their binary, but at least it works.

    Explicit use of WMDs on the battlefield would have justified / provoked a massive WMD response from the US. "All options are on the table"

    It was much easier for Saddam to gas the Kurds: they don't have anything to respond with.

    You are kidding, right? The terrorists have won? We have not had a strike on US soil in four years. Two countries that supported terrorism no longer exist. Things are not great in Iraq, but I would not call it a failure yet.

    I think "shock and awe" was a valid description. The land war with the one of the world's largest military forces was over in a matter of days.

    Go ahead an tell me Iraq would be better off long-term with Saddam in charge. HA.

    They did have WMDs in Iraq, we just have not found "militarily relevant" stockpiles.

    If stockpiles did exist, they probably moved to Syria or Iran in the early days of the war, or even before the war started.

    Funny, but displays are not going by Moore's law.

    Old high res Sun monitors from a deacade (or more) ago still work just fine at 1600x1200. That was super high res back then, when most were lucky to get 800x600.

    Now, Apple has a 2500x1600 display that is pretty sweet, and IBM has the highest density monitor at something like 4000x3000.

    Now if I could just get a 2100x1080 projector for something reasonable so I can watch 1080i on a wall... Sony has one, but it costs thousands...

    You can't remove IE, it is tied to the OS. Except for the OSX version. And the unix version.

    And you need IE for little things like windows update and braindead websites that only work in IE.

    Can you even just delete the IE icon off the desktop in XP? They used to lock a few icons on the desktop requiring reg hacks.

    I agree. You don't notice commercials sucking so much on TV, but listening to CNN or Fox on XM or Sirius really stinks, too many long, bad commercials.

    I would pay to have just music during the breaks. Anything but that crap they push.

    It needs MathType.

    I think I had it working in Crossover, but it was pretty flaky. Even on a XP box it was a little flaky, but more ok.

    O have tex2word and it works pretty good for me.

    Complex equations are ok and bib stuff (if you copy your .bbl file into the .tex file).

    Tables and figures, not so much.

    At least I can get my equations into word without retyping.

    Now if I could find a decent way to add a high def preview to my nice eps files. Word can only print eps if you have a eps printer. Word can display eps if you have a bitmap preview, but the bitmap previews always stink. You would think they could handle a standard vector graphics format, but no. Not for three versions now. Frustrating.

    It is not that damn easy.

    The non-military GPS system is not accurate, so you are usually at lease 30 feet off target.

    Trees obscure your sat signal, so you can often have troubles.

    Even when you use the cheat code for the cache to get the clues, it is sometimes hard to find just because the box is hidden, especially micro caches.

    My wife loves this stuff, and I like to hike, but finding some of those obscure caches is a pain in my ass.

    We put automatic blinds in our house. They run on a remote or a timer and use 8 AA bats.

    Sometimes the bats last more than a year, but sometimes only 6 months.

    They sell a transformer you can use for the system, but you would need to run wires from a crawlspace / cabinet to the top of your windows. Security wires usually run only to the bottom.

    About $200 per window online for normal window.

    It is pretty sweet to show off to people all four windows in our great room going up / down.

    But he can sign a contract.

    Maybe the contract says he won't work in a related field, or he owes MS all his salary.

    Or maybe he owes MS millions and millions if he breaks the contract.

    Or whatever.

    He is free to work wherever, but there may be contractual ramifications that affect him financially.

    In this case, he signed a contract to now work for the competition, and now he is violating that. He now decides not to live by the contract, so MS can sue for civil damages.

    Yes, but you should be able to run OSX as your base with VMware on top so you can run linux / XP apps in the VMware box, assuming they port VMware to OSx.

    I would rather see wine running on OSx, that has always worked for me without the overhead and headache of Vmware.

    Most Linux stuff will recompile and run on OSX as-is currently, but XP apps would be the limiting factor.

    Totally!! My 650 kicks butt. The 1 GB SD card is a bit limiting for MP3s, but having a converged unit is really nice. 2 GB SD are out with 4 coming, but not soon enough.

    Having a single device (Palm PDA, Cell, MP3, Camera, games) is terrific.

    The camera is pretty stinky, maxing at 640x480, but having it take video is pretty cool too.

    Now, if they could just make the Tre 700 with 4 GB Ram onboard plus two SD slots, onboard WIFI and GPS, and a 3 MP camera I would be completely happy.

    I use tkbibtex as my gui front end for bibtex. It seems like a ok little program.

    And while you are using Latex, you might want to consider LyX as a gui front end for latex. It lets you see your equations and figures and tables...

    Back in the good old days people would upgrade CPU or video cards... CPUs upgrades are somewhat rare, seems like the slots keep changing. Desktops do get the occasional gamer GPU card, but most people are not that hard core.
