WPAN.....isn't this the job of Bluetooth ? Great, not only we have HD-DVD vs. Blu-ray, and PSP vs. DS, UMTS vs. WiMax, NOW we have to worry about Bluetooth versus ZigBee!!
Thanks, but no thanks. I'll happily keep my BT appliances.
first of all, i've owned 2 palms before - a Palm IIIc and a Sony Clie NX60.
claiming a palm can replace psp is same as claiming a cell phone can browse the web - it can BARELY do the job, let alone doing the job well.
yes a palm can do everything other than a kitchen sink - pda, cell phone, bluetooth, wifi, SD, CF, 480x320, camera, video recorder, web browser, even photo editor, right ?
let's talk about each of them:
1) pda - today it's about split with WinCE / PocketPC, depends on how u measure market share 2) cell phone - the treo is a HUGE device 3) bluetooth - who can't 4) wifi - sucks up batt life on the radio, and the screen res too low to view a regular site 5) 480x320 - WinCE has VGA 6) camera - will u go on a trip taking 640x480 shots on a CMOS cam ? 7) video recorder - 160x120 is such a good resolution to watch someone's wedding 8) web browser - again, sites need at least 640 width to render without excessing horizontal scrolling 9) photo editor - MS Photo Editor can do better
the point is - just because a convergence can do everything doesn't mean u can throw away every other gadget you own.
I have a laptop, a cell phone, a PDA, an iPod, and I see them complementing each other instead of fighting each other's turfs. The treo650 is as close u can get as an omni-covergence device - it does everything with mediocrity.
for now, the batt life might suck on PSP, but if a 3rd party can come up with a batt comparable with DS, then we can finally compare them fairly instead of:
the DS camp accusing PSP of low batt life, disc media instead of nonvolatile, and lack of attractive titles, and
PSP camp mocking DS of weak hardware specs, thick bulky profile, and the same Mario and Pokemon games all over again
it sucks that both machines have enough disadvantages to turn me off....sigh...
The phrase "christian science" is oxymoron at its best. A thousand years ago the church said the sun rotates around the earth. A few hundred years ago the church said the earth is flat. These days the church say sexual orientation can be altered at will. And throughout history, the church says evolution never occurred.
Christian Science ? Just as close to reality as Cold Fusion.
The parents should accept SOME responsibility on educating the good and bad on TV, instead of trying to totally protect them. The right-wing agenda loves to prevent kids from being exposed to reality - safe sex education, antidiscrimination education, violence and sex on TV, raising the drinking age limit....the list goes on
the truth is...kids will act mature if you treat them like adults, simultaneously exposing them to the world while educating. if you hide everything from kids, all they'll do is experiment in the dark - unsafe sex, binge drinking....the drinking age is lower in most western countries, yet USA has the highest death rate from binge drinking. reason - positive select. when u treat college kids like adults and trust their judgement and let them drink, they WILL drink responsibly.
and u'd wonder why no parents complain about hip-hop lyrics - those are more valgar and suggestive than most TV shoes. even jerry springer pales by comparison !

Dell outsourced their corporate IT support to India, then had to BRING IT BACK to the United States because too many customers complained of the quality. Cost efficient labor rarely equates to quality labor.
In this world, you get what you've paid for. Cost efficient is just a nice way to say labor exploitation. When labor is being exploited, how can you expected quality ?
I'm no Norma Rae, but I do believe the hard-working laborer has just as much right to live a non-poverty life as those executives with multi-million dollar bonuses.
A LOT of indians speak much better english than MANY americans ?
what an unjustisfied anecdotal rhetoric!!
i don't care what accent they have, but if are to be working in call centers for US customers, they'd better speak in an accent that US customers will easily comprehend. speaking face to face is already a challenge. speaking over the phone is hard. speaking technical jargon over the phone is impossible.
in my college (an Ivy), within the engineering department, there's NO WAY anyone can understand the TA's. They're either from India, Singapore, or China, who speaks Hinglish, Singlish, and Chinglish respectively, which none of those are remotely comprehendable. In my CompSci class, when an indian student asked a question and the indian professor answered, it sounded like they were speaking in a foreigh language. i would have had understood better if they spoke in Perl !!
Offshoring will keep the US average income per capita the same (since executives can pocket more profit), but will definitely lower the MEDIAN income (more people in middle class, and more people falling to poverty).
Since what part of it looks "cool" ? As a nerd-mobile? Or as a chick-turn-off? Doesn't offer passenger capacity, luggage capacity, strong safety features (i survived a 70mph crash on a Toyota SUV, not sure i can survive with this Zap car), lacks the horsepower, lacks the leather seats, lacks the amensities, lacks the aerodynamic look, and definitely not a car i wanna drive to a hip club in town. Daily commute? Sure. Pleasure or visitors? Give me an Audi.
The definition of "incumbent" is the incumbent party, not candidate. For example, Gore was never the incumbent, but 2000 was counted as Democratic Party incumbency, which lost because Redskins loves repeating history.
Ironically, diebold also manufactures ATM machines used in major US banks, and so far, we've heard few complains. why can't they duplicate that logic when creating e-voting machines ???
Really depends. I personally own an iPod, and I think it's a killer for portable music. But viewing pictures on a 2.5" screen with less than QuarterVGA resolution on 16-bit color? Heck, my PDA offers photo viewing at 480x320 on a 3.5" screen and I passed too. I still don't really see the whole portable media center concept going anywhere.
I thought iTunes offers MP3 or AAC ripping, not AIFF. AIFF is such an archaic format it's existence anywhere is solely for legacy applications. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
BSD is a true Unix, so applying for the certification is reasonable, but wasn't Linux (or its predecessor Minix) a Unix-clone ? It can be POSIX-certified, but Unix-certified is a bit stretching the truth ? That's similar to a street bootlegger asking Louis Vuitton's Paris headquarters to certify their $15 LV bags for "authenticity."
Aside being an iPod owner myself, I like AAC for a variety of reasons:
1) it's ISO-standardized 2) it's the default codec for MPEG4 3) it's embraced by Apple and iTunes Music Store 4) it's sound beats mp3 by far 5) it's sound (at 128/192), in my opinion, is slightly superior to WMA 6) by not using WMA, i'm not tied to Microsoft's future changes in licensing agreements
currently i have mp3's by far, but I rip all new CDs to AAC (m4a, not m4p).
Ogg Vorbis is unsupported by most mainstream hardware, and WMA excels only in low bit rates of =64, which I don't rip to. MP3Pro is barely embraced, and mp3's psychoacoustic model is aging, thus leaving AAC good for quite some time to come (at least until the replacement of AAC arrives).
Surprisingly, while MPEG4's AAC is widely adopted and available, few people have access to MPEG2's AC3 (possibly due to licensing issues with Dolby). Sony's ATRAC3+ is so proprietary it's not even funny.
The idea of RSS is great, but how is different from the late 90's idea of pushing content to the desktop, such as Microsoft's Active Desktop?
2 issues posed: 1) Automated RSS agents might update too often, thus creating unnecessary network traffic. 2) The user might need to access the absolutely latest headlines, and the RSS agent might be displaying a cached copy. Then when the user access the original site's frontpage, the original intent of RSS is defeated.
I'm a huge fan of RSS (esp My Yahoo portal's implementation), but the problems need to be addressed.
say if the user knows he wants to run AIM, MSN, ICQ, and Firefox, can't we write a little script to trick WinXP to run them during boot-time and consider them a "service" as opposed to a "foreground program"...
or even better...during installation, install every program under "services" then running the program means starting the service....hence...0 foreground pgrograms running
The whole point of RAW is lossless. If we apply lossy JPEG compression of 2x to 5x, then it already defeats the major advantage of RAW files. Why not based the digital negatives on lossless compression such as PNG ?
"a little extra space" ? how about as in 4x the volume and around 3-5x the weight?
compare to CRT, LCD and Plasma has lower power consumption, less radiation, lower weight, smaller size, and has that "sexy" factor

Diebold has only precided who will win Ohio (ref : Diebold CEO), but that's only 20 dinky votes =)

If you use Sun, then it must be the fault of CEOs who excel in golf.

The latest generation of iPods have native Firewire or USB 2.0 cables included in the box. I sync my mp3's from my Windows laptop through USB.

Let's see :
VHS vs. Beta was a war created by Sony.
DVD-R/W vs. DVD+R/W was a war backed by Sony.
DVD-Audio vs. SACD was a war created by Sony.
Zip vs. HiFD was a war created by Sony.
HD-DVD vs. Bluray is a current war created by Sony.
Correlation IMPLIES causation in this case!!

mp3 is lossy, and ATRAC3+ is even more lossy, so what ends up on ur portable player ? seti@Home type of random noise?
Google have similar wait times to exit beta as ICQ and Friendster....i.e. perpetuity
*sigh* and I was hoping a better source than CNN.com
