    1) personal interest
    2) potential growth
    3) rewards (yes, monetary, among others)

    and not for their parent's bragging rights.

    For most Indians, we are told from a young age to study hard in order not to fail in life. Chinese parents, from my own experience, are quite similar too, in many respects.

    root of problem in Hong Kong - too many professionals. chinese parents INSIST on their kids being professionals, and the result - OVERSUPPLY of medical doctors in Hong Kong, resulting in their pay so low that even being a business analyst is more attractive =)

    GOOG is fueled by hype, and a GMail system that is STILL in beta. Institutional investors would rarely put GOOG as part of their list of stocks, even though GOOG's initial share price is indeed targetting thouse. The iPod is not exactly the same because it's more of a portable music device such as a walkman or discman. The Blackberry is more an ugly cell phone but with hormone-enhanced SMS. Returning of technology? THAT should be judged by technology spending at the corporate level, not a couple consumer gadgets plus a overhyped stock.

    this is the first time EVER i heard LCD is worse for eyes than CRT. What's this "empirical evidence" u're citing without quoting or reference?

    Let's compare the options for a living room :

    CRT - forget it, a 60" one will be like 300 lbs
    DLP - can only view from VERY narrow angle
    Projector - faint, needs all lights dimmed
    LCD - sharp crisp but expensive
    Plasma - perfect for living room viewing movies if not for burn-ins and phosphor degradation

    that's based on the VERY vague and unrealistic assumption that hotspots are so close to each other you can "hand-off" a call currently in place. unless the city is 100% wired for WiFi, you rarely need to think about handing-off anything on 2.4GHz.

    then we have to account for the cost of the WiFi connection itself. at the current prices of WiFi hotspots plus vonage/skype rates, you only save if you're making multi-hour calls to Canada to make any sense. Cell phones plus international phone cards are so cheap these days that the savings from VoIP doesn't show until after so-much usage

    for a random person who wants to learn about biking in the tarantulas, they wouldn't know which "niche media" to go to as a starting point. also, the regular Google-oriented WWW is too decentralized, thus you couldn't find a single site as a great starting point. Wikipedia does JUST that. One cannot compare a mass reference tool to a niche journal - i.e. you can't expect common joe to read a peer-reviewed medical periodical in order to get an understanding of colon cancer, the jargon alone will drown the unedcuated reader

    The Linux model won't work. The workings of a kernel is only so-big, so the designated underlings can probably understand the code.

    Compare that to Wikipedia. Do you feel comfortable that 100 "designated underlings" of Wikipedia can have the authority and knowledge to correctly pass or fail information ranging from the color spectrum to DNA to the Russian language, and so forth ?

    if the wikipedia is expert-jounal-style reviewed, it won't be even half the current size it is. the volume of information in Microsoft Encarta looks like a joke when compared to wikipedia

    this actually is not "stupid."

    cell phone companies nearly never have unlimited weekday daytime plans during business hours, so a business call to Canada for 2 hours would be TAD expensive.

    with 3G data plans being unlimited data at USD 80 / month, a corporate America company can simply give a traveling businessman a 3G data card, sign him up with the $80 plan, and make calls to Canada and heaven forbid, India, for as long as he wants.

    Americas east coast plus europe/africa west coast accounts for what? 30% of the world's GDP? it's not just the lives of the victims, it's about the economic panic or disease spread or lack of resources to relief millions and millions of people.

    if an asteroid hits Lake Michigan, it can ALSO create a tsunami capable to wiping out Chicago. tsunamis don't necessarily have to be from the ocean. seas and large lakes are good candidates too. if u're so afraid - escape to mongolia. no hurricanes, no sand storms, no tsunami, no earthquakes, no volcanoes. until then, help donate to charity to help and victims, and stop bragging about your present location.

    after seeing the images and videos of the waves rushing with no warning into Asian shores, all of a sudden the pictures from "Day After Tomorrow" become vivid of what might happen to New York City if a tsunami created from the center of the Atlantic arrive in the US eastern seaboard.

    HP and Dell and what-have-you are already allowing the billions Intel dumped to Itanium to evaporate, so it doesn't hurt to evaporate a few more B's. Itanium is the right innovation with the wrong execution - sigh. Itanium installations currently shine in academia, but that will barely re-coup Intel's investment. Time to short INTC.

    Time to update your signature =) We've all gone through the hype Google managed to pump during their IPO phase by releasing an ALPHA version of GMail, and never doing a full release (their PR claim it's beta quality but i beg to differ). Especially now that Yahoo Mail has a search very similar in power to that of GMail, I see few reasons to desire a GMail invite. Okay, i'm offtopic.

    Only imported goods would be more expensive. When the dollar is weak, the purchasing power of the American people would be weaker, which means controlled inflation. Inflation comes bottom-up instead of top-down.

    it's way easier in Micron's case because we're only dealing with DRAM chips, not CPUs. Screw up one DRAM? Throw it away. Screw up one wafer? $70000 write-off. That's why it's easy to outsource DRAM production to Taiwan. How often you see a CPU fab in Taiwan?

    A person may pass by a city local park just to be in the tree-shades for a few minutes. But when someone makes an effort to visit the state park, the last thing they want to is work, therefore providing WiFi coverage is counterintuitive and would motivate the wrong behavior. Cell phone coverage, on the other hand, may be necessary in the event of emergencies.

    DLP are just as big as CRT, and have a VERY narrow viewing angle. DLP is nothing close to light weight and small footprint when compared to LCD and Plasma.
