  1. Re: Not to be a cynic but... on Lossy Music Formats Compared · · Score: 2

I think you're completely off the mark on this one. Often times musicians can easily pick up on aspects of sound quality that the average user can't. It's just like some people can smell better than others. Just because I can't smell something doesn't mean it's not there, and the same thing can be said for the quality of music. I might not be able to pick up on something, but my roomate who has been playing the double bass for years often can.

That having been said, I think that these musicians overate the importance of sound quality on MP3s, because most people's stereos are not capable of producing high enough quality sound to make much of a difference.

  2. You're looking at this the wrong way on Review: Final Fantasy · · Score: 2

While I do think Katz's review was a little bit harsh, you need to keep one thing in mind - this movie should be reviewed as a Movie, and not a video game brought to the big screen. It needs to be judged just like any other movie would be judged, except that it should be noted that it's basis comes from a video game series.

The creator himself has commented in interviews that it isn't neccesarry that you have played the games to enjoy the film; if it did its job as a film, you wouldn't have had to play the game to understand it, as long as you pay attention and think about the plot a little bit. I'm not saying that Katz is right, but I am saying that we have to look at this as a movie, because that's what it really is. That's it for my little rant on the subject...

  3. Interesting...kinda on Disk Storage Limits Loom 3-5 Years From Now · · Score: 1

While I think this article brought up some important points, I think it would have helped if it had looked at more alternative options than just the virtual disk solution.

Also, the author seems to have this "the sky is falling" mentality in the article - why? It's not like this problem with storage space is going to effect the average user anytime soon. Large corporations will be the ones who are really affected, and if it actually becomes a problem, they'll invest enough money in research to solve it, and we'll break another "impossible" barrier just like we've seen happen time and again in computing. They used to say it was impossible to run a 4 minute mile...and now it's done routinely. So much for predictions from the so-called experts.

  4. Ridiculous on The Demise of Hackable Computers · · Score: 1

First off, what's with the teaser about unhackable computers? Talk about pulling the old bait n' switch technique /. style. Couldn't they have said something like unmodifiable computers?

Then there's the actual article. It seems to me that it's simply someone editorializing, and not deserving to be placed as "news" on /. It would have been more at home as an offtopic comment to some other /. article than as an article itself. I didn't think the author said anything particularly new or interesting, and it seems like most people concur with that.

The more I read /. the more I become convinced that these sites are paying /. to link to them. Maybe it's a secret scheme to keep VALinux in business...

  5. M$ empty step on Microsoft to Change OEM Licensing · · Score: 1

I think the problem here is that this really isn't a step at all. What difference does it really make if they give OEM's the abiltity to remove certain icons and IE is not automatically installed? Since there really isn't any widely known competition for IE that most Windows users know about, IE will continue to dominate. It simply means that users will have to choose to install it (which they all will).

This step seems, IMHO, to be simply a PR move to make themselves look better during future legal actions. Kudos to M$ for appearing to take a step, when they're really getting the jump on the fools in the DOJ.

  6. Virtually Indistinguishable? on The Tech behind Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within · · Score: 1

The article for SGI says that the characters in the movie are "virtually indistinguishable from live human beings." I know the movie looks awesome, and I'm going to see it ASAP, but isn't this just a little too unrealistic of a claim?

  8. Re:Shit happens... on MS, CNET On 7-Day Messenger Outage · · Score: 2

I think the reason this is so big is simply due to the fundamental difference between appearence and reality. Maybe in reality (and maybe not) this really was just a hardware problem which will never occur again. But the appearence of the situation is that M$ can't handle something as simple as keeping a messenger service working, so they'll never be able to keep something like .net working.

I would also like to add that the service issue raised because of this is an important one: we all know that services will fail at one point or another, but a responsible company needs to alert its users.

One question this brought up in my mind is how many geeks use PayPal? I only use it because I buy stuff from auction sites. I wonder how many people would donate if only they used PayPal. 11. Not too well informed... on Playstation, Dreamcast And The 3rd World · · Score: 2

It seemed to me that these people aren't too well informed. First off, to refer to the PS2 as just the "Playstation" is a little misleading because the original Playstation is still being sold. If they can't even refer to the system properly, I think there's going to be some major problems up ahead for this project. Secondly, it doesn't matter quite so much what the machines cost to build, as what they can get them for. An XBOX may cost $400+ to build, but if you can get it for $300, that's the figure you need to worry about. Then they talk about using GlobalStar for service without even having contacted them yet. It seems that these people just have some sort of half-baked idea they want to propagate to make themselves look good.

On a side note, the BSD Dreamcast looked pretty friggin' cool.

  12. Joseph Campbell on Lord of Light · · Score: 2

If you enjoy reading these types of works which weave religion and mythology into their stories, you might want to read some of Joseph Campbell's works, such as Hero with a Thousand Faces. Campbell was one of the world's foremost scholars on mythology before he died a few years ago and his books are definitely worth a read, even if they are a bit dry at times. In them he often talks about the re-use of old stories and myths in newer works, and I think this would certainly apply to LOL, along with other works, like Star Wars.

Stereotyping like this takes any chances for decent debate and throws them straight out the window.

I've been to a GameWorks before (a lot like Dave & Buster's if you've ever been there), and I agree that they do quite good business. The biggest problem with them IMHO, is that they are full of "clone" games. There are a bunch of racing games which are basically the same, some fighting games that are basically the same, and gun games which are all the same. You have to look long and hard to find an original game. It just doesn't feel like old-school arcades used to. Anyone remember the days of playing Darius, Galaga, & Final Fight? You just can't quite get the same experience anymore, and I think that's pretty sad.

Secondly, I disagree with Cpt. Nitpick's response, because I think this is an attempt at a technological solution. To simply say that something could be done by humans does not mean that a solution is not a technological one. I'm sure that the FBI could simply have a huge number of people read everyone's email, but since this isn't feasible they switched to a technological solution, i.e. Carnivore.

They simply are not aware of the alternatives to MS, and even if they are, they don't care enough to check them out. I would have to say that your profile of the "common user" is way off.
