Then again, I was subject to intense outside schooling, so I never really paid attention to my "normal school" teacher in history.

I can't wait until they start talking about Vietnam in history books. Will they ever mention that the USA was the country that most supported the action, and that anti USA was a popular view point for some asian countries as well as by some of the US american population. Or how about that an american movie star fired on USA troops and was never put to trial for treason.

The report I saw on TV was that they are regular people like you and me, that have slightly more refined abilities in describing the smells, (like a wine taster) and consistently go to classes (smelling schools) to refine it.

Their job in NJ is to track down offending smells that might originate at factories. They work in teams of 2, and walk the town. They write detailed reports, take wind samples and try to locate the offending smell. The way the TV show pictured it, it seemed that it was a difficult job, not as easy as it sounds. Also, I recall, they get paid pretty good, I think it was 40K plus travel. Not a bad take for working with your nose.

Another TV show I saw was the NOVA episode about perfumes. Those people were located in labs in France with thousands of different smells that they mix to make perfumes.

What it is called is yield management. It works quite well. Based on the idea that if you have a finite inventory (this case a voyage or trip with xyz amount of space), you should be able to pre-sell most of it early, what is required to sell the space is small adjustments in the price.

The problems/joy comes when inventory approaches the extremes (very few seats, very open seating, or few days left before take off). The pricing model will adjust the prices so rapidly that 2 consumers can have 2 different prices and the difference could be huge percentages, 10 ? 40% in some cases and the tickets were purchased minutes apart.

For that reason, people should never book flights with less than 2 weeks or greater than 8 weeks from takeoff, unless they know that the flights will be booked out. Example is spring break, you can book that flight in December and pay less than if you booked in January. Same thing for USA to Europe, in June and July book 6 weeks in advance. For Hong Kong out of NYC, Cheapest flights are in September, October, & November and you can wait until the last 3 weeks to arrange it.

Also my favorite, a customer calls me urgently saying " where the heck is the Berlin Wall, I can not find it anywhere in England". It took amazing powers to restrain myself from laughing at this guy.

Stories like this are very common when dealing with American clients. Also you'll find it very interesting to note, that most New York city residents have not been to the Statue of Liberty. I myself have never been there, but for lunch in the past. I use to take wine and cheese, ride the ferry ( .50 round trip ) and pass by it, raise my glass and say thank you. Currently I use Earthlink. They will not allow IP traffic from certain web sites, also they do not let you connect or use port 25 ( the e-mail port ) if it's not to their server . It's very easy to see that if AOL/Timewarner stop the traffic early in the game, file trading users will not notice the establishment of the denmark napster, or anything that could cost them long term revenue drain.

If I were able to lock a specific narrow focus patent, that would provide me with an advantage ( very small one but non the less an advantage). If I keep on having more of these narrow focus patents within my field, I could, in the longterm, hold control over a small but well defined product / application ....

I think a good related example is tax rulings. If you can get certain well defined rulings in your favor. You can accumulate tax saving upon tax savings ( on rule related to another and another ...). The company that does this so well is ADM. They have a ton of rulings in their favor and it all adds up.
