You can try out the 2.6 for free i think. The client sucks though, allthough it works with exchange, the last time i tried it.

The urpmi tool coming with mandrake is well.. ownage =). Works like apt-get for me in the rpm world.

urpmi is the frontend to rpmdrake =).

It just works =). The nr. 1 reason i use mandrake (the second is cooker).

However i'll always welcome another tool, as long they can live side by side =).

If they would just concentrate on the browser engine, the browser engine and... yes the browser engine.

Why should my web browser start an entire application platform? I just want to view web pages.

I think the term bloat is very soon to be replaced by 'mozilla'. Their next idea is probably a new desktop envirement... like we need another one (/kde/gnome/windowmaker)

However this the great about open source. Other can use one good part from one project (gecko) and make other things better and more integrated (galeon).

I actually returned the Harddisk today, maybe i should try to get another harddisk back =).

He! a danish isp (CyberCity) launched that some time ago (as in weeks). It's here in danish

I havent tried it out and probably never will. They actually claim that you dont download the parts you dont play, so it's pretty fast to get. Besides adsl i widely spread here in denmark so it isnt that much of a problem.

I do wonder if they really modify the game so it only downloads the parts that is needed.

It happened in denmark. Doubled the price of a cd-r.

Then they started talking about taxing memory cards & harddisks.. they are insane.

So every time i burn my favorite linux dist. I pay some nasty musician. Nasty cuz the amount they get is based on their normal sales. So for me the music i really cant stand ( danish pop), gets my money. All by burning a linux dist.

  9. Re:My Experiences (limited though they are) on Tips for Teaching Seniors About the Internet? · · Score: 1

I got my grandmother started on using (75+) a pc.

    I'll list what I've experienced.

The Mouse movement was pretty tough to learn and double clicking is even harder. Someone mentioned solitiare, and yes it is probably the best thing for teaching how to use the mouse. Everything is there, movement & dragging, even double clicking.

Depending on the seniors give them time to get comfortable with the mouse, if they dont get it they'll keep getting frustated because they cant do anything. Ergomics is also important, look if they try to hold the arm up by itself (bad) or rest the hand on top of the mouse, even the fingers should rest on the mouse buttons. Double clicking is almost impossible otherwise.

Allthough i bought the stuff and assembled it. I didnt teach her because of time/experience issues. Instead she took a course, which was actually free (Goverment payed).

Just the fact that she met other ppl at the same level she was was a huge motivation factor.

Make sure they do the stuff themselfes, seeing another person do it helps nothing. Make sure they have a step by step guide available afterwards. They arent going to use the computer everyday and they tend to forget a bit more =). The index card someone mentioned really sounded like a great idea.

Make sure they understand that the pc really 'talks' to you. I cant think of other modern equipment that they could have used that actually talk back. So make 100% they _READ_ the text that could comeup. For example dialing up gives information on what is currently happening.

So far she is comfortable using email and word. I still haven't got her hooked on the browser thing, which is pretty hard since english isnt her native language (or mine for that matter).

Besides i think that learning how to browse web pages requires a bit of the "exploring lust" like 'hey lets see what this is' that just isnt there. Another problem is that it's pretty hard to make a step by step guide to the internet =). It's kinda like the chicken and egg problem. They wont use the net until something really usefull is there, and they wont learn about any usefull sites since they arent using the net =).

So i cant help you with the web browser stuff. Maybe some goverment info pages could be usefull, or other info they use often. Remember they have done a lot of things the same way for many many years and it's hard for ppl changing habbits.

That was my experiences on my grandmother entrance to the pc world (winter/spring).

Good luck with the course =)

  10. US phenomenon only? on On The Future of ISPs, Both Large and Small... · · Score: 1

Crappy about the recent dsl isp's cracks :/. Maybe it just hasnt reached Denmark yet, but ISP's are happily expanding here. Especially those who offers xDSL acces, which is about 3 or 4 larger ISP's.

What's the situation in other countries?

Maybe it helps that about 60% of the population can get dsl in Denmark? Also they are aiming for making dsl possible for about 90-95% of the population in a couple of years.

  11. What about the means? on Are Kids Turning Your Kids Into Killers? · · Score: 1

Ok this is from an outsider (non-us) point of view.

Bullying has always been there i believe, that aint no country specific problem, infact research shows it's increasing in denmark too, we have our share of suicides too :(. So why is it only US that has the problem of kids killing each other? It's the means available to the kids.

I've gotta say, from the outside view you are (as a nation) obsessed with guns :). I know all of you arent that way, but your community is flooded with guns, and thus it's available to kids. When a kid is feeling hurt & angry. Either he takes it out on himself (suicide) or the bullying part.

My own experience, tells me that i've actually thought of how nice it would be if this person just wouldnt be there. Although i probably wouldnt had done bad stuff anyway, even though i'm a hardcore fps gamer ;). But i can recognize the feelings in some of these kids, and if you have the means at your side it's so much easier.

So remove the means, this case being guns.

But i guess that it is nowhere possible with the lobbying weapon companies does. While bush is just a puppet of the industry as far as i can see :).

Someone noted that his dad said you shouldnt care what other people say you are. Excellent advice. As a kid it will probably feel a bit useless, but keep telling the kid then some of it ought to get inside :).
