  1. Re:Conform on Is There a Linux Client Solution for Exchange 2007? · · Score: 1

As a sysadmin in a Windows based network, I have got to agree. When you were hired, weren't you given a computer of some kind that was able to do everything your job required of you?

If this is your home machine, simply ask if they can setup some type of remote access, (Remote Desktop, VNC, Terminal Server, etc) to your desktop to be able to work from home.

Also, I have to ask one more question: What would you tell your boss if something went wrong with your non-standard and unauthorized mail client that caused data loss? As you said you have a state job, there is a very good chance that your email is public record. If there is not a solid mail archival system in place, you could be jeopardizing quite a bit more than you think.

Seriously... I had only one experience flashing a BIOS; my AMD K6-300 with a PC Chips motherboard. The floopy formatted well, and the files extracted happily, I though all was well until it crapped out, due to some bad sectors on the floppy, during the update. After kicking around the idea of replacing my board completely, I found BadFlash.com. You can find tons of makes/models of boards and purchase replacement ROM chips. Very with the 20 something bucks back in the day.

Most board games have some sort of Role-Playing element to them, not just "You walk into a room with 3 Cyberdemons. You died." Doom is a GREAT video game as most hack and slash games like it. How does gameplay flow?

Are there character goals? Can you build up your marine to rule the underworld?

Then again, perhaps I just don't get it...

Aw c'mon now folks... Visual Basic even before .NET was at least partially object oriented. While most VB developers don't really get OOP, it was available.

With the coming of VB.Net, VB has actually grown up into a real OO language. No longer just for RAD work, but for real quickly developed deployable applications.

I would also like to mention that you can write messy, unmaintainable code in just about ANY language. I have seen some DOS batch files that would make Bill Gates puke!

Actually, that is a lot like the "plugin" methodology used by SalesLogix. We have a very large, highly customized installation managing almost 500,000 contact records... I would truly love to be able to implement versioning in the system, but that is not possible as all of the code/screens/reports are stored as blobs in the database.

The only moderately reliable method of versioning is copying the code out of the scripts into text files with date stamps.

Why would someone try to do ANYTHING secure with a database engine based on JET... Even personal projects I write, and small business systems are based in SQL Server.

The mere thought of trying to store such important data in an unencypted manner gives me a headache.

One must wonder what the GEMS architenct was thinking using such a ubiquitous data store as MS Access. Honestly, my company will not even seriously consider an application for use if it is based on Access, or even stores it's data unsecured in an MS Access database.

While there are methods for "securing" an Access database, they are based on JET's user system, which itself is not all that secure in the first place.

Might I suggest they rewrite the database core to SQL Server. There would not need to be that many changes to the source code if there are using standard ADO or ADO.Net code. One can quickly create an encrypted database using a statement something like this: Create Database "secure.sdf" databasepassword '' encryption on

Being that this data has the potential for selecting the countries next Presidient, the data should be:

    Encrypted

Secured with Multiple Levels of Authentication

Passed on a network invulnerable to snooping (fiber comes to mind here)

Encrypted between the client and server

    Agreed. A well written AT script something like this: Each M T W Th R S Su 12:45 AM shutdown /l /r /y /c

Would do the trick... We have used that exact script for YEARS to nightly reboot a troublesome NT4 BDC at a remote location.

While we knew that this was not a great solution, no one needed to access the server at that time of night. Any right minded IT person should be able to see the flaw in the FAA's logic.

I work for a contruction company that did just this a few years back. We built a 700+ home retirement community in the US. We partnered with a local Cable TV/Internet provider. The cable company installed all the in-ground components (just a normal Cable TV network plant) and provided both Cable TV and Broadband Internet Access.

As far as telephone and radio - I am sure your local companies could prove helpful.
