There was one african-american character on the US side. Due to the fact that he was only in one or two scenes, this film at times seemed like a white vs. black fight, and that bugged me.
I know that on my time warner digital cable box (in the kansas city metro area), they broadcast PBS, HBO, HBOW (just the pacific version so everything on three hours ago is on again), Showtime, and Showtime West for HDTV. I don't have an HDTV so i've never been able to check it out, but i think this is probably true for most digital cable across the country.
Fruitless searching for games? This isn't january of 2001...just because you stopped paying attention after a couple months of people complaining of a lack of games doesn't mean that there aren't any now. The last couple months were crazy for PS2 games. Though it's started to slow down, Sony did a major push to release major games the last couple months, resulting in a very large number of five-star games: Devil May Cry, Grand Theft Auto III, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, Metal Gear Solid 2, SSX Tricky, Final Fantasy X. the Playstation and Playstation 2 totally dominated video game software sales in the month of november. From what i read at IGN, those two systems (and i'm sure mostly PS2 due to the fact that very little comes out for the original playstation anymore) account for 2/3 of the videogame console software sales for the month of november. It's so stupid that there's so many people on slashdot who still just start spouting off about how the "ps2 has no good games". Even Penny Arcade doesn't say that anymore, because they know it's patent bullshit.
PS2 still sucks? What? You been hiding under a rock for the last month? Grand Theft Auto 3, Devil May Cry, Tony Hawk 3, Metal Gear Solid 2, SSX Tricky....no good games? Why do you think that there's a sudden burst of top-rated five star PS2 games right about now? You probably gave up on the system months ago and stopped looking at what was coming. These games are great! I dont even have enough money to consider buying an XBox or Gamecube right now because I've already spent my money on these games and I promise I don't regret it at all. Halo's supposed to be great and all, but I don't have any faith in the XBox, and current Gamecube games are mostly mediocre.
That's cool and all, but when I looked on Amazon.com this morning I noticed they had Gamecube bundles available to ship within 24 hours. When I went to the XBox bundles, it said "Currently Not Available." Gamecube didn't sell out in Japan, where Nintendo always does better than here, I highly doubt they can manage to sell out here. At the same time, I think this belief that a system can't succeed unless it sells out the first day is overdone and mostly an outcropping of the whole Playstation 2 launch. As long as they keep a constant supply of Gamecubes to stores and they sell reasonably well, I wouldn't worry about its stature. The XBox however has a bit more of a battle. It may be doing well now, but they're competing more directly with the PS2 than Nintendo, and at this point there has been a top quality five-star PS2 game coming out every week for the last five weeks. XBox has one big game, and I think it's mostly winning over PC gamers. I know of only one guy in my school who seems excited about XBox, and he's a PC gamer and I doubt he'll even end up buying one. Everyone else I know who likes games already has a PS2 and has spent all their money lately on Tony Hawk 3 and Grand Theft Auto 3. Then there's still Metal Gear Solid 2, SSX Tricky and Devil May Cry (which everyone sorta passed over awaiting GTA3). To top it all off, Sony's well on its path to reach its mark of 10 million systems sold in North America by March of '02. Sony definitely can't lose at this point because most gamers I know can't afford a new system right now, and well-polished games are finally being released for the PS2. Hopefully the XBox will peter out soon, like the Dreamcast because honestly as a system it just doesn't make sense, and hopefully the Gamecube will get some higher profile games soon, and come to a comfortable second especially when it's such a budget-conscious system.
As a matter of fact, you can chip out your ps2 right now. It's a bit of a bitch to do it, but you can. Check out easybuy2000. There's a million other places as well.
There's but one flaw in your logic. In order for people to copy and download everything, someone still has to buy the original. But wait, there's a way to get past that. Just STEAL the original and then let everyone download it...or is that going a little far?
But nothing, of course, nothing even gives a hint of an explanation for why blacks "do what they do" in such proportions, right? Oh no there's never any more complex reasons for anything. Let's live our lives by statistics! I mean, no WHITE people in poor WHITE neighborhoods ever commit crimes, oh god no. There's no way that the reason blacks seem to commit more crimes has to do with the fact that the average black is poorer than the average white. Let's just take one statistic and assume that it's the explanation for everything! Wow, look how simple the world is now!
Time Warner's Roadrunner claims only to be using a small fraction of their network capabilities at each neighborhood's center, leaving the rest dark to be turned on for when more bandwidth capacity is necessary in each neighborhood. Now, that could just be PR but there's probably at least some truth behind it.
Here in Kansas City, if you've tweaked your modem right, you can easily get about 1950 kbps down/360 kbps up (advertised 2000 down 384 up), whereas basic DSL from SWBell for the same price is UP TO 1400 kbps down/384 up, but minimum 384 down/128 up, a noticeable difference. I have noticed little to no slowdown in my area. A friend of mine who lives in a neighborhood that has had roadrunner longer and also is wealthier (most likely with a higher percentage of broadband users) says he's noticed some slowdown at peak hours (primetime normally), but he still connects at well over 1000 kbps even then, whereas many people with DSL are getting nowhere near that.
I used to be a major proponent for DSL before I had cable and learned some of the facts. Now in the end, as about 50 of these posts already mentioned, good DSL is better than bad cable and vice versa, but I just don't see DSL as capable of taking the lead from cable, just for these issues. Cable installation are simpler and take less time. Also, DSL companies are known for their lack of support and for having major problems with installations and the like. Just go to dslreports and look at top rated providers. Cable almost always beats DSL because DSL is just way more complex, period.
Ah but you gotta remember, they said the same thing about microchips. I remember reading in Fire in the Valley about how a lot of the early producers of microchips didn't see PCs in the future for their product, but rather they thought that the chips would be used in things like blenders and other random home appliances, and for the most part that hasn't really worked out. The washing machine hasn't evolved all that much in the last 50 years.
Actually, Connectix has already formed a partnership with Nintendo and is producing both V.90 modem and Ethernet adapters. If you look at pictures of the back of the console, there's a sort of cut-out portion near the bottom where the adapters will fit. I'm not aware if they've set a price yet.
Ah, the wonderful tried and true Social Darwinist ideal. The cream rises to the top, right? And once there, we all know they are extremely moral and take good care of everyone. Of course they don't lobby to the government claiming they don't have enough native IT workers, and get them to pass bills allowing 80,000 IT jobs to be imported each year, driving down wages, right? No, they're far too moral. Of course strict laissez faire capitalism doesn't breed a cycle of poverty, causing even the most talented to have to struggle 10x as much as some dumb kid of a rich CEO, because we all know that the invisible hand guides things to the moral side. Hell, even Adam Smith never claimed it was moral. You're far too idealistic if you believe what i think you're trying to say. The fact of the matter is, once you're at the top, it's not hard to forget what it was like when you weren't. Most people don't give a shit, and will do anything to lower overhead and increase shareholder profits. Our society's far too complex for the libertarian ideals you exude. Communism may only work in a dream world, but the same goes for laissez faire capitalism and strict libertarianism. Social Darwinists are just presumptuous pompous asses who are looking for a reason not to feel guilty about those they exploit. Andrew Carnegie may have been a great philanthropist (founded many libraries, a university...etc) but he sure didn't do too much for his workers. The only reason the average factory worker isn't working 12 hour days and being told the business isn't responsible for their finger being cut off is because of unions, and that alone is good enough reason for me, because I doubt that corporate boards are any more moral than they were 100 years ago, especially when they still use Chinese slave labor and pay Indonesians $1.25 a day (which allows them to buy 2 plates of rice with a small amount of steamed vegetables and live in an 8x15' hut with a tin roof). I wonder what's lacking in those countries...hmm.....unions?
Yes...exactly...we all know that corporate moguls with huge shares in a corporation truly care about the workers' welfare and wouldn't do anything to hurt them solely for the purpose of raising his stocks a couple points. No that's never happened, because we live in "the greatest country in the world"!!!! Wake up, mon ami, working conditions are only tolerable in this country becuase unions make sure they stay that way. What evidence do you have to show otherwise? That IT jobs have good conditions? That's because at the moment most tech companies need more employees. But when the "revolution" (as the media would call it) is over, and they've got enough people to meet the demand, we'll see who claims they need organization. It wouldnt be the first white collar union....secretaries are often unionized. It's for their own benefit, don't assume it means you're going to spend half your life striking.

Another book about PR firms and their tactics (as well as corporations that use their services) is "Toxic Sludge is Good For You!" Another great read, and it's extremely sarcastic as well (always a plus).
