Yeah, I seem to remember hearing that the reason that the low-end edition of VPC ships with IBM's PC-DOS instead of MS-DOS is only because MS refused to license stand-alone MS-DOS to Connectix. As far as Microsoft is concerned, DOS without Windows is a non-platform.
I think it's very likely that the DOS-only edition of VPC will disappear, assuming that VPC for Mac continues to exist.
No actual images-- just artist's concept sketches.
NO NAMES on the web site-- the PR drone's name is the first actual name I've seen yet associated with this enterprise. You'd think they'd mention at least one name if their management team really is composed of all those purported industry vets.
Also notice how when they brag about their experience, they don't mention the game industry as being part of that experience?
This is has got to be one of those VC/stock market fraud companies... like that 3d tv one in that Wired article (sorry I'm too lazy to look up the story:-P)
It should make for an interesting Game Developers Conference this year, if they actually show up.
The Gameboy Advance comes along, and using the same type of screen, only larger with higher resolution pixes, and suddenly everyone things the Gameboy Screen is "notorious for shitty screen"? I don't get this.
Since the GBA plays GBC games, it's pretty easy to compare the two displays side-by-side. Plug the same GBC game into both and take a look. I've tried it: the GBA screen is darker and harder to read than the GBC.

i had to use sherlock 3 to find equilibrium showtimes in my neighborhood. even though sherlock's content is provided by moviefone, the moviefone web site would not provide me with the desired info today (thursday dec 5).
in the sf bay area, it's showing at the landmark lumiere.

They don't have enough reviews for a tomato rating, but at the time I write this, 3 out of the 4 reviews there are positive.
I understand that you were only giving examples of each genre, rather than the first of each genre, but besides that, some points need to be made:
Street Fighter 2 is not a side scroller! it's a fighting game.
Pole Position is not a first person racer, since you see your car (you're not in the driver's seat), so it's really a 3rd person, 3d racer. But the important thing here is that it's a 3-d racer (as opposed to overhead racer, a far smaller genre)
3rd Person platformer is another big genre, ever since Tomb Raider
You say "in my mind, these are the big five", when you list 6 game types
I understand the sentiment, but this needs to be given a bit more thought before choosing those six genres as "the big five";-)
yeah i miss the days when "arcade-quality" games in your home was the holy grail!
of interest is that the atomiswave system is based on the sega dreamcast...

I agree. This is actual hand-crafted ASCII art, not merely running some JPG through a converter.
The high-color conversions have a neat look, but as "art" it's underwhelming.
I completely agree.

Hehe they fixed it. Check out the screenshot of the original error.
I'm not sure how long this will last
That's what I think is cool about this phone. It's got J2ME onboard and runs it really really fast (having seen it demoed at JavaOne).
The best thing about HP RPN calculators is that you never have to lend them to anyone!
Would-be borrower:"Can I borrow your calculator?"
HP owner: "Sure"
(Would-be borrower looks at RPN key layout, confused)
Would-be borrower: "Oh, err... nevermind"
