It'll be bad news for the video game companies if MAME is re-released under the GPL. Loading a video game ROM into MAME is just like linking, and since the GPL is viral...
Thats so stupidly wrong and totally anti GPL-FUD. The GPL does not spread on the data handeled by a program. Like you can of course edit GPL source code in a non-GPL editor. Or edit properitary source code in a GPL editor. Also gcc as GPL compiler can be used to omit properitary code and all that. Same goes with interpreters, an GPL interpreter can of course execute non-GPL code, as well GPL code can be executed by a non GPL interpreter. Everything clear now? Stop spreading such FUD-stuff even if ment by humor, some people might misunderstand it. They fear the GPL general without understanding it.
Java applets embedded in web pages only run while you are at the page.
Who told you that? Lesson X in java thread programming is to terminate yourself nicely if the user leaves youe side - if you do it wong YOU KEEP RUNNING!!!
The only thing that proves is that the majority of users don't keep their systems patched, since Microsoft has made Outlook immune to viruses (yes, IMMUNE COMPLETELY IMMUNE)... been that way for over a year now, maybe approaching 2 years.
Saying such thing is completly unprofessional. It's like selling the unsinkable ship, the unfailable airplane, the unbreakable firewall, etc. etc. Anybody telling nonsense like that should get an unprofessional stamp on his forehead.
Yes. And if the patch is slow in coming out, it's because they are regression testing it. Do open source clients regression test their patches against thousands of machines with different configurations, or just release it as-is and post followup patches if they have problems?
Oh and thats why service packs often introduce new bugs. And thats why some fixes are exclusive. Meaning you can apply fix A or fix B. applying both patches will not work. If you apply fix A you get Bug C. Talk with some _real_ admin of a larger microsoft network, you will hear the tears.
But what can ever stop me taking my digi-cam, point it toward the monitor and *click*. Now I can send the image at least as.jpg around.
And remember there was an old technology from the last century it's called """transcription""". This amazing technology is very flexible, it involves one up to two eyes, and 2 up to 10 fingers. Performance increasing with increasing resources (eyes, fingers). With this highly developed technology you can copy any text document, without any ability of a software vendor to hinder the text being copied from a viewable document, it is impossible to track the email headers as threatened in the original halloween document. If you're interested in aquiring this amazing new thing you can order typewriter 1.0, you can do it at home all yourself, only requires 5 minutes a day, and your friends will notice the difference! guaranteed! And free of charge you'll get a free set of "paper". (a blank medium, then can be "mailed"). If you order now you'll get a free "suck palladium" sticker, and a free "what a stupid email header tracking threatener" flag.
Well not to justify this guys, I do know far too less to take side on this case, but remember Einstein? He was often handled as outsider and stranger in his times. (not to say idiot, but in his school he was classified as "less gifted") Remember? He even got an F in physics. So much about our grade system at schools.
However his general relativity was a genius stroke, so mind boggling it was. (special relativity was due of the time, if it wouldn't have been him yet another scientist would proparly have discovered it some years later, but not so general relativity, we might not even have it today, without einstein).
Patents are not good, and no the objections don't holy the means, no matter how good they are. Say no to software patents, no matter if they are currently on your side or against your side. Thats beeing a honest free software supporter.
let's see, a tree of files and folders that just mirrors the filesystem directory structure) to access our information
What are directories and files actually? Well they are already an abstaction of hardware. Files are an invention of the OS _for_ the user, not an internal actually. (Of course for convinience the most OSes use files for themselfs, since it's a good abstraction) Files are an abstraction of underlying hardware, without them a harddisk would only be a data stream. directories are another service for you to sort this files. If files aren't approperiate one should think if there is a better representation to order data (I cannot think of one of hand, files are one of the most ingenious ideas the computing history had.) However files/directories are not at the first hand OS internals, they are services of abstraction for the user. In example a linux kernel itself will run happily wihtout any, altough you won't be able to do much except hitting magic sys-request keys on the keyboard.
I'm talking about exact functional copies of software
Even that has been done a million times in closed world. You know what simulatio/emulation means? Think in example of the PC-BIOS. PC's only started of when other companies managed to make functionally exact copies of the IBM Bios. And not this is perfectly legal and okay. Making functionally exact copies with the same interface is not coping like copyright law forbids.
Think of another example, the car. Ford started building cars, with gas and brakes and all that. Then other companies started also to make cars, different internals/details, but functionally just the same. Are you saying that was not okay, and ford should be the only car manufacturer out there? Or the first car company that came out with ABS. ABS is good is it? All other car manufactures copied it's behaviour, you say they shouldn't have?
No, I ran KDE (well KDE1) perfectly on my 486-100Mhz, and it performed quite okay. A real speed for me issue was the XServer for the graphic card, when I got the correct one (instead of generic SVGA), KDE also runned several times faster.
Well if you can record and playback at the same time is more a matter what you sound card driver supports. Note not all sound card drivers are able to do that correctly. However this is a kernel issue. For example when I started expirmenting with speakfreely getting to work in full-duplex mode (speaking and hearing at the same time) was not an easy thing, as I've discovered the default audio driver SuSE picked was not able to handle this. Using not the ALSO but the driver from the linus-linux tree it was possible, altough this driver had the quirk that it hung the machine now and then when in heavy use.
Thats easy I guess I got the same, if you trace mozilla you will notice that it hangs at opening "/dev/dsp" which is blocked by xmms.
You're running xmms using artsd? If not you should;) Then don't start mozilla normally, start it with "artsdsp/usr/local/mozilla/mozilla", artsdsp will force mozilla to work with artsd, and wolla xmms and mozilla share happily the same sound device via artsd. (and mozilla does not hand anymore)
Well back to the windows 3.11 days Lotus 1-2-3 was actually better IMHO. A lot of better. But in example the company I worked at that times (Hewlett Packard) changed from the lotus suite to the MS Office Suit. Do you know why? Not because it was better. They said, becuase most of our costumers and partners use MS Office, and the properitary file formats are difficult to exchange, (we could'nt easily read their.doc.xsl files etc.) So they also bought MS Office in a really big deal. Leaving Lotus in the stitch. (and note again NOT because MS Office was the better product, not even as official reason).
Because there are a lot of people posting on/. And a lot of people having different minds.
The phenomenon here is not at all/. specific, it's people specific. For example one thing to note is that an unhappy guy (costumer) is a least 10 times louder than a happy one. It's always like that. If you buy a product and your happy with it, how many people do you tell it? One until maybe Five, if you buy a product and are unhappy with it, how many people do you tell that? Normally everyone you get to talk to while you're in the bad mood.
Thats the same on/. nobody will just post "I agree." and even if it will be overlooked, what to give to this? +1 Insightful?.
Secondly with people here and ms. It's like back on school, with an old mean larger school boy that liked to mug you up. After he kicked 10 times the shit out of you. And then offers to give hands (even if his intentions are good this time) do give him your hand? Or are supescious?
You got the grammar too right, the original japanese game had not base in plural, but in singular.

Closing the source does not help a bit. After all you give a binary to your "foe", thats enough. Look in example to Ultima Online, they encrypt the stream already in 10 layers or so, with constant changing keys, algorithmns and so on. But it is still beeing hacked, simple as that, you've a binary of the client, you can view the algorithmn on assembler basis, thats enough "source" code to hack anything assuming enough motivation and time.
Look at all the companies trying to hinder people copying with copy protection CD's, tongels and all that. Does it help? No it's all just a new challange for the hacker folk.
No I'm not a troll, and I normally don't play with the guys in Redmond.
I took CE as example to show how few "open" "source" actually can mean. There are many degrees on freedom, having the source available is one degree of freedom, but by far this does not qualify as free software, if you're not allowed to re-distribute changes, or the source itself.
It's a shame that -YOU- don't know what "Open Source" means.
Especially since that "Open Source" means by far not free software, however don't be aggrieved mismatching FreeSoftware and Open Source is a common failure.
In example windows CE is Open Source, since you can get the source for it. But is it free software? Definitly not!
However OpenSource is a true key attribute of free software, but not all.
Once for al Ariane V was not a programming error. Yes it was an error in a program that caused the accident, but it was NOT the fault of a programmer. Why? The system in use (I think it was the inertia compensation?) was designed and programmed for the Ariane IV, the variable that overrunned was explicitly tested to work in bounds with ariane IV. The funny fact is that they did have overrun checking the system they used, they explicitly turned it of for the variable in question to gain speed, since they tested and calculated to be running always in bounds. The real error was a managment one, it ocured when the system was transfered as is to the Ariane V without recalculation or reprogramming for new conditions.
And the second important thing it's not okay to blame any programmer/person. Normally it's a whole chain of things going wrong that lead to an accident, not a single event. Even if a programmer makes an error, in an important system like that, it should be reviewed, and also quality assurence failed completly in there. For example the ariane V, why was the system not tested for Ariane V conditions?
Right, the issue RMS brought up is not to tell bitmover what to do, it is if linus and the rest of the kernel folk should use a software package where you don't have the right to use the software for whatever means necessary.
