As a developer your supposed to turn off this feature, but out of the box all writes to \Program Files are actually virtualized to the user profile. Back in the day you couldn't get your app logo certified if it wrote anything to \Program Files or HKLM - for the simple reason it would fail if you used that app as a standard user (under XP/2000/NT4).

Same with registry writes - by default Vista will virtualize anything written to HKLM to HKCU - since one is full read/write for the user and the other is read-only for the user.

For all intents and purposes - from what I've seen (and it sounds like you and I are in the same business) if your app was developed for Windows logo guidelines (really made popular around Windows 2000) it'll work just fine on Vista.

Apps that failed to run as a regular user in XP/2000 will fail to run on Vista without elevation.

To me - not quite a nightmare, since we've been building to windows logo certification since 2000.

One of the reasons I thought it was fun to learn morse code back in the day when I got my amateur radio license. Morse code happens to be the most fundamental mode you can use to communicate over the airwaves. If you had nothing, and needed to build a radio from scratch you could build a set to do morse code in an evening or two - where as something to do PSK/GMSK, FM/AM, SSB etc would take quite a bit longer.

Contrast that to the way satellite radio (for example) works. Satellite radio has about 50Mhz of the S band for 150 channels of content. FM radio has about a 5th of the channels in about 5 times the spectrum...Massively inefficient.

FM Broadcast band is 87.8 to 108.0 - thats 20 mhz of bandwidth - channels are spaced at .2 mhz - which makes 100 channels.

Also I should point out XM is 2332.5 to 2345.0 - thats 13.5 mhz, not 50. 150/100 is 50 more channels for 6.5 mhz less bandwidth.

So digital radio is more efficient, but not quite to the numbers you state.

Also you completely ignore legacy - what about the costs of replacing all those radios and upgrading all those broadcast transmitters?

You want to talk about waste - complain about the AM broadcast band. 520-1,610 KHz - thats 1.09 MHz. That may not sound like much, but when you figure that there's less than 2.7 MHz of MF spectrum (300 kHz to 3000 kHz) - thats a huge waste.
