But you have to work on the art. You can't claim that the code you make for another purpose and without any intention to do art is art.
Your work as a musician is to get up your ass and perform for an audience.
Or composing music on request.

Your work is not recording once something and then sit down to do nothing and expect to be paid for that.
Technology has distoreted completely the way musicians think about music, before the advent of recordings musicians earned their living doing some actual work.
Now many musicians expect to be paid for one performance that happens to be recorded. The recording industry has brainwashed them, and in the process they have lost touch what music is all aobut: people relating to people, in the meatspace mind you.
Recording of any kind, specially nowadays where copying them is practically impossible to stop, should be considered as a nice advertisment vehicle from which some (very few) may even derve an income.
All the "semi-professionals" expecting to make money from recordings are simply completely unrealistic and obviously have been living in a cave for the last 10 years.
You know, if you say "I batjumped from the floor risking my life" my first question would be, dear caped, from which floor?
So you lost 2 CPUs, my question here is, how many do you have?
If you have only 2 thus, although unfortunate, I would rather blame it on Catwoman than in Sun's lack of quality, since as you surely will agree, your sampling would not be statistically significant.

I administer a couple of hundred Sun machines and haven't had a CPU failure for 5 years.

DO an exercise of reduction: choose 10 pictures a months and back those up. THat is plenty.
Any people really interested in your pictures will have plenty of material with that.
As for the rubbish one produces make them public: that may be the best antidote against oblivion: send as many CDs/DVDs of your holidays and memorable occasions to friends and family, publish them on the internet, etc. THat way you harness the popwer of people that may be interested in keeping copies of your pictures.
Otherwise, let them die, you will not miss them (like if you could find them: cataloguing personal collections is becoming tha nightmare of every household with a digital camera).
15 years ago Linux was a little hobbyst project, only people in the fringes of the Internet would know about Open Source Software and no company would dream about using free tols to keep busines running.
Today billions, literally, depend on open sourced tools and open formats, Linux is installed in datacentres all around the world and is gaining acceptance in the desktop (damn, if I could speak).
And the MS fan boys can pretend they are in denail.
