The only time I found useful a waiting system was when every minute or so I was informed what was my place in the queue to obtain the support I needed.
To know that I am getting close to be served is very cathartic if you have to wait for more than 2 or 3 minutes.
Oh yes, play a Beethoven string quartet, whatever else is suggested is pure rubbish.
... baring road signs, you can happily trade in metric (which is by law BTW, imperial measures are still used for the convenience of old folk, but metric is perfectly OK) or provide your height and weight in centimeters (Brits: in the parts of the world that saw the light earlier, you just say 1 menter and 75 centimeters, not 175 cm or even worst 1750 mm!) when you go to the hospital or GP.
As for milk, you buy in a container celarly labeled as containg 1.whatever litres (the equivalent to 2 pints). Hint: in other metric places all containers are whole number of litter (1, 2, 3)...
With all due respect, but if the US wants to remain on their isle of exceptionalism for every single issue people around the world are bound to lose patience.
The absolute monstrosity that is the "system" of measures in the US and other few countries is something an elightened society should have ditched decades ago.
Do you know how many hours do classical musicians practice per day their technique? Obviously not.
Do you know how many hours do dancers practice their physical technoique? Certainly not.
Do you know that many of the most insightful writers will be voraceous readers and will constantly refer to grammar books, dictionaries and other technical resources? It would seem you don't.
Inspiration is frankly overrated, such point of view regarding "inspiration by the muses" so highly is a hangover of the XIX century romantic mentalitly, which of course forgot how the artists of that time worked uncountable hours to polish their technique.
Linux is free, gratis (and most importantly Free, but I digress), but comapnies want somebody to scream at when things are not working.
That privilege comes at a price. But to say Linux is not gratis is to be either misinformed or a misfit (like perhaps some people that have broken the law are: did you hear me MS?).
Some may have lofty ideals like freedom, most have other reasons for enroling in the army (have you seen the disproportionate amount of Latinos in the US army? Guess why the joined...), normally it is a way to get out of poverty and during nasty wars plain and simple forced conscription.
Users are told the tool they bought is the greatest thing since sliced bread, but it quickly transpires that in order to keep your machine clean you need to invest a lot of time and money in endless patching that most probably the poor owenr deos not understand what it is doing at all.
Companies that become a monopoly can't do whatever they want. In this case MS should just keep out of the Antivirus arena and allow antivirus companies to fight amongst themselves for that chunk of the IT market.
Or they could provide what is clearly a differentiated product at a price that reflects the cost of its production. To pull a Internet Explorer on this area would be illegal and immoral.
Using your same pseudo-darwinian reasoning, nurses save talent thet helps our species to advance (a disabled or sick person can have some talents that are important to preserve and use for as long as possible),
Ditto for teachers.
As for firefighters I will leave it, I can't contend logiclly with somebody reaching half of his conlussions in an inhebrated state pulling argument out of that part where the sun nevr shines,
Almost all EU mainstream political parties are left of the US Democrats.
For example the Conservative party was pretty much evenly divided in issues like gay marriage and adoption of children by gay couples as well as some topics of sexual education in secondary schools (i.e. teaching children there are gay people, duh). The Conservative party is the party of MR R. "I forgot Iran-Contras" Reagan's old chum, Baroness Thatcher.
US people do not realize how much to the right their political landscape has been moved by Reagan and the two Bushes, Mr Blair would want to do the same in the UK but thankfully he can't.
Surely all those "Windows for Dummies" books, expensive courses, videos, etc. are testament to the complete lack of need of retraining for different MS products.
Yeah, people using Windows 3.1 can rest assured, they are ready to use Longhorn in 2010 when it comes out.
When I grow up I want to be like you Batman, such powerful logical thinking will save the world against the evil Penguin!
The backend can be whatever you fancy, the interaction is via your web browser, firms with half a clue are making sure that those applications are fully compliant with W3C standards.
If it is and old propietary cludge of a program this is the ideal moment to migrate it to something else, although the time frames given sound optimistic it can, and if there is enough political conviction, will be done.
One could do backups oneself for 0.25 if the companies were not intent in robing us of any rights we may have to make those backup copies.
It is OK to make a profit when you offer a vaulable service, it is not OK when you are lobbying (no, I will not go as far as to use words like bribbing whne refering to the honourable activity of political lobbying...) with all your might to erode people's rights so their only legal choice becomes using your overpriced "service".
Sometimes the lack of criticism and logical reasoning of some people is perplexing.
I have my Yahoo account for years, and very rarely it filled up (6 MB).
Recently with spam counting against your quota and more and more graphic attachments I was seriously considering alternatives (I also like POP3 access, I want to backup my own email in my own backup media, thanks).
And now Yahoo gives me what I need: 100 MB when I would have been happy with 20 or 30 at most.
I think they do get it, no wonder they have been around since the popularization of the Internet.
Now I don't need to change an email address that everybody that knows me is familiar with.
Honestly, first time I hear aboyt this and is generating and interesting thread, so what is your point?

A colony is a foreign land over which another country has full authority, colonization is not a necessary part of colonization in a modern sense.
....
The US commited so many attrocities in the Philliphines that Saddam Hussien gassing of the Kurds pales in comparision

.... and the cponnection from Skole to school is not an obvious one to me.
Insensitive clod whatever.
On this era in which to have convictions is not "in" derading people with clear ideas about what they want is an international sport.
Well scored, you obviously can play the game.
But I know you Brits are averse to such rude practice :-P
You have enough ammunition on this site to debunk the claims they present as a matter of fact when in reality it is just their interested opinion.

Great work.
Is common sense dead in the US?
The students could have a 30cm cable that would connnect to a network port easily reachable on their desktop.
What is difficult with that?
Jeeez.
It is a beta product with only a few thousend users.... Bat-doh!
Saying that back then when all the black people were either slaves or considered lesser human beens.
Very moral, very telling about the religiousness of that society.
People go to war because they have to.

Answer: you don't.
Consumerism tainted of laziness.

Anybody with enough or $$$ can go to London and see it for themselves.
Many people applied for beta accounts of gmail and obviously (and understandably) only a few have them.
For the immense majority of Internet users, gmail is a lot of hot air and hype, willfully helped by some of the testers.
