hmm 64 DSL circuts on fiber? These are the same SPs that put 64 DSLs on a T3.

Maybe I missed your point, but having only 64 DSL customers on a 45 meg T3 would be EXCEPTIONALLY good. SBC has been known to route several thousand ADSL customers through a single T1.

EA's game Black and White uses this (or something similar to it) for part of the game interface. Pretty cool, but I wasn't able to get comfortable with it.

It is hard in B&W to get comfortable with. But, the gestures are much more complex than the ones you find in Opera. In Opera the most complex gesture you'll ever do is left-right-left. In B&W, to cast a simple Miracle like Shower, you have to draw a spiral, and then an S. It takes some serious practice to get it working consistently. Even after playing for several hours, I still have to try 2 or 3 times usually.

    I think the renewal of "X-Files" for a 10th season is bigger news . . .

Well, that would be big news, especially since next season will only be The X-Files ninth.

    . . . Anyone see Sunday's episode? Damn, that was well-done action/adventure TV! . . .

I will agree, last week's episode was good. However, the general quality of the series has degraded significantly this season. The last few episodes have been good mostly because Duchovny has been back. The episodes earlier in the season were lacking in comparison to some of the greats from the earlier seasons. It was rumored that there were two options for the series after the eighth season, keep going another year, or stop and produce one last film. I would have loved to see the series end on a high note like that, rather than try to squeeze out another 20 episodes without Duchovny.

It is debatable, but American is valid for a US citizen because The United States is the only country to have America actually in the name of the country. Citizens of Mexico are Mexicans, citizens of Canada are Canadians, and citizens of the USA or Americans. They are all North Americans, but not all Americans.

Frankly, Jon's review is about one of the best I've seen in quite a while. Hollywood is craving on the mentality that "The movie isn't supposed to make sense anyway!" so that they can make bad movies. If we, the public, allow them to half-ass films and still make millions of dollars, they'll just keep doing it. Think of it as the Britney Spears Effect. If industry can avoid having to take time and pay talented people to make a quality product, and still make money, they will.

Another trick that I have found is handy for tracking down spammers. It's prety easy to find the upstream provider they are on. (just look for the IP of the first "Received from: " in the headers.) However, many spammers are finding ISPs with IP addresses that have no DNS names, which makes it impossible to do an nslookup on them to find out who their provider is. Sure, you can tracert, but that's not usually very reliable. The best way to find out who to complain to is to go to ARIN and do a whois on their IP. That will tell you who actually owns the address, and will usually give you a good idea of who to contact.

Oh yeah, and make sure that you block anything sent to you via BCC. 90% of spam is sent blind CC, so you can get rid of a vast majority of it by taking this simple step with some email filters.

The funny thing is, IGN originally was a product of Imagine Media (IGN = Imagine Gaming Network), but is now with snowball.com. So what did Imagine replace IGN with? Daily Radar. Figures.

Yeah, and Snowball is about dead as well, at least that's the last I heard on FC.

This is really disappointing news though. I used to read Gamecenter. When it died I moved to DailyRadar because I felt their articles were well-written and intellegent. Now, they're gone. The only two major sites left are IGN and GameSpot. Problem with those two is IGN seems to be written by a bunch of 13-year-olds, and GameSpot is entirely too corporate. So now what? What is a gamer supposed to do when he/she wants to find out about the newest games?

Same here. Ever since that story last week about Opera I've been hooked. Every now and then I'll find a site that doesn't work with Opera and I have to open it in IE. I then try to Righ-Click:Left to go back, and nothing happens... Seriously thinking about registering. It's been a long time since I've found a program so useful.

For those of you who do use the program, be sure to set it in the options to report as Opera, that way when admins look at the User-Agent logs it will show up properly. Just maybe, we will get people to take Opera seriously when developing sites.

Now, to something actually on topic. I use a Logitech Trackman Marble+ at home, and a standard MS Mouse at work. I like my Trackball better for doing the mouse gestures, but I generally prefer it over a mouse anyway. I guess to each his own, but I really don't think the input device matters, as long as you have the standard drag motions mastered.

What's weird is that when I tried to post in Netscape and then IE, they both did the same thing. Didn't have a problem with any other pages, tho.

It seems to be working better for me now. I was able to post this, and I can navigate better. Still, if I click "x Replies below your threshold" I get a 501 error. Oh well, who wants to read thos 0 and -1 comments anyway...

  10. Re:Facinating on Opera Adds Gesture Navigation · · Score: 1

I haven't tried the new Opera, but there's no reason they would have to take away your right-click pop-up menu to give you gestures. A single click with no dragging can just be a particular "gesture" which invokes the "popup-menu" function. Anyone know if this is indeed what Opera does? I would be ticked if I lost my right-click menus too.

Yes, it does. If you just right click, it brings up the normal context menu. I'm using Opera 5 now, and find the gestures to be a very fun, intuitive way to browse pages. Not to mention the rest of the interface (save the ads, for unregistered versions) is very clean. It does seem to break /. though, I've been having a lot of problems navigating. As a matter of fact, I had to post this with IE, because Opera kept getting 501 errors from the server. Strange.

Definitely. The Paradigm Reference series is simply amazing. I have an entire Reference system consisting of a pair of Studio60s, a Studio/CC, a pair of Studio/ADPs, and a Servo15. The main 5 are driven by a Marantz SR-8000 receiver that I am also very pleased with.

If you're short on cash, the Paradigm Monitor series is also exceptional. The Monitor 7s can be had for around US$570/pair.
