If microsoft's proposed settlement where they will provide 1 billion dollars of free software goes through, then really free software will suffer.
Imagine a scenario where a student only sees microsoft software throughout his/her k-12 education.
By the time they reach college where *nix has a stronger foothold they won't know what to do.
Better to get the cash from microsoft to buy modern pc or macs, instead of getting free MS software the old pcs.
Go to your local music super store. Pick up a pile of 5 - 10 copy protected. When clerk rings up your 150 - 300 dollar purchase, reach for your credit card and then ask "Will these CDs play on my computer?" The clerk probably won't know and ask for a manager or supervisor. When he/she says they won't tell him/her that you refuse to purchase CDs that are incompatible with your computer and walk out. That will give the store manager something as he/she is returning the pile of CD back to the racks.
Tom Clancy knew about something like this.

In his last book The Bear and the Dragon, Tom Clancy writes about how some programmers working for Microsoft really were working for the CIA. They planted code in Windows to help index and transmit the contents of a hard drive back to the laptop of a CIA operative.
If people will sell out to the CIA other will sell out to a terrorist organization.
Given the closed nature and wide distribution of windows, it is the perfect place for government agencies and terrorist organizations to operate.
Lets take the case of discovering an ip address.
command line version:
linux
ifconfig eth0
or
windows
ipconfig on win
GUI version:
windows 2000
right click my network places.
select properties from menu.
right click local area connection.
select properties from menu.
double click Internet Protocol
Hey theres the ip address.
cancel.
close window.
Its not the we know too much. We just want other to feel the same joy and sense of control we feel by using the command line.
I'd rather be able to type the command to get the information I need rather than clicking through endless dialog boxes and menus to get at the same information.
Break out the thumbscrews.

Let me clarify this $2500 router issue. We sell a modes 7100 routed that comes with a usb satellite modem and driver software. We will also sell you just the software.
Our licensing is based on the number of users who will be using the satellite connection simultaneously.
Lite (2-4 users) $199.00
Base (10-30 users) $599.00
Unlimited (unlimited users) $999.00
So you can buy our router or create your own satellite router. All you need is any linux distribution with a usb enabled kernel 2.2.16(patched) or 2.2.18. We also have RPMS specifically for RedHat 7.0.

Great they moved the encryption to the hardware freeing up the cpu to run seti@home a little faster.
Why buy new hardware, when with a little effort you can use ipsec to do the same thing.
