If you're going to consider old games as part of a new console library then the PS Vita had over 1000 games available at launch(PS1 classics + PSP as PSN downloads). We all know how great that turned...
What you say is correct, but I don't think it's an issue. While this comment is a response to your comment, what I'm going to say next is not target at you but everybody who is worried about the current Linux game library and the lack of compatibility with the DirectX and Windows games.
The Steambox is a NEW game console/game platform. Unless the only thing you play are old games(which means you're part of a niche called retro gamers), "backwards compatibility"(or should I say compatibility with the current Steam Library) doesn't matter very much at all. It is much more important to make sure brand new games get a release on your platform than then trying to bring old games already available on older(and rival) platforms. FOR EXAMPLE, I guarantee that having a game like GTA5 on the Steambox will attract a lot more costumers than having all the previous GTA games available natively. Sure BC is a bonus but shouldn't be priority. If BC helped that much the PS VIta and WiiU would be in a much better position now and the 3DS wouldn't need a drastic price drop in 6 months after release.
As for the DirectX vs OpenGL debate it doesn't matter. If the SteamBox/Linux proves to be a profitable platform for gaming than devs will write their games in OpenGL/AL/CL and Linux SDL. The Playstation consoles use a fork of OpenGL ES 1.0 called PSGL and the majority of mainstream devs(and recently lots of indies as well) are developing for it.
Anyway I just hope Valve does a good job marketing and releasing this rumored new game console. Not because I want one(at least not for now) but because I want sony to have a good competitor in the home console arena. Otherwise they'll get arrogant again and the next-nextgen consoles(PS5) will be overpriced and will suck again.
There is a day and night difference in size requirements between a desktop class x86 core and an smartphone class ARM core. Desktop CPUs with 32 full featured cores are still quite far away in my opinion. And to be honest I'm not even sure if there is any advantage to that. At least for the next decade I can safely expect APU like processors with some big general purpose cores and tons of smaller task optimized cores(GPU cores for example). Even the exynos you posted is not a true 8 core ARM A15 processor but a mix of A15 and A7 cores.
I respectfully disagree. While I'm a Playstation fanboy myself, I'm always looking to play the 2D Zeldas(Link to the past, Oracle of Time/Season and Link's Awakening). I'm buying a 3DS exclusively for the LttP sequel it's getting. That is how good I consider them. The 3D zeldas(and marios BTW) just bore the crap out of me. I understand why some people like and I respect that but I can't help but to find the 3D titles over-rated.
Yamauchi-san: good night sweet prince. Thanks to YOU playstation exists today. My childhood will be forever in debt.
I disagree with that and for two reasons.
First, while there is a chance the total sales of PC+PS3+360 may be bigger than PS3+360 alone, that doesn't always hold true, as sometimes the only thing you succeed in is in shifting the console sales to the PC(not even talking about piracy). Also actively supporting PCs increase the development and marketing and post sale supporting costs. Yes I know that console games are developed on PCs and most likely Rockstar has a working build of GTA5 for their PCs, but, as you said yourself, they are not optimized and most likely will require monster PCs to run well (see GTA4).
Second, and IMO most important reason, marketing 101 dictates that you should milk the cashcow as much as possible. If you release such an overhyped mainstream game on a limited selection of platforms such as current gen consoles you WILL attract people from other platforms such as the PC and the people waiting for the next gen consoles regardless. Then you re-release the game on the next gen consoles with better graphics and performance, inducing a lot of people to rebuy your game. Then, finally, you release your game on the PC, inducing a final third wave of sales.
You must remember that Rockstar just like the overwhelming majority of game companies, publishers or "indies", are not "for-gamer" but for-profit corporation. It's part of their mission to minimax their losses and profits above anything.
I mean not only he is a sci-fi writer just like Ron Hubbard, but he is a Star Wars writer. He could easily either be pope of the already existing Jedi church or create the Sith church. What a wasted opportunity...
It was hinted in some interviews that the PS4 controller will also be supported. The only reason it only supports the DS3 for now is because it's getting released before the PS4.
Not really open dealerships(I think that is also illegal) but sell through third party dealerships. Automakers cannot own dealerships in some states and countries. It's a crappy law where the only people that win are the middle men and the politicians they support. Tesla is in good terms with Toyota and a few other automakers. Unfortunately I think the only solution for this problem is for them to join together and counter lobby this legislation.
Dying handhelds are a thing of the NA and EU (I don't like the "west" generalization). In Japan, handhelds are the main platforms. The thing is that for a global company like sony to release a region exclusive console simply doesn't make sense in the big picture(specially now under the "One Sony" plan). That is why in my opinion the VitaTV can potentially be a stroke of genius.
1) In Japan there are these popular PS3 accessories called Nasne and Torne which help integrate the PS3 and the TV more allowing TV show recording alongside a few other minor features. The vita TV seems to be the PS4 version of these devices.
2) In the US and EU, handheld is not as popular anymore and, as a result, many devs don't have that much of interest in them either. On the other hand, smartTV boxes are a hot topic and there is no killer product in the market yet. A playstation smartTV could be the killer device in this still underexploited market as it is the only one the fuses a huge variety of game genres, media consumption and affordable price. If it succeeds it could attract devs to the vita platform even if they are not directly targeting the vita handheld. Japanese devs would be more likely to bring their games overseas (the Vita has a very good library in Japan), American and European devs their own Vita exclusives games.
3) Developing countries. The PS4 and the Vita are just too expensive for the average citizen of countries like China/Brazil/India/Russia/etc(for many reasons including local politics). A cheap PS2 level home console that could still play newly released games could help sony get a huge share in these regions.
If wasn't for the proprietary memory, the vita ecosystem could easily dominate the market.
