I don't know how, but the last time I went to the eye doctor, my eyes had actually improved! I have been using a computer almost daily for the last 10 years. My eyes were never that bad (I just wore glasses to read the chalk board in school). I had lost my glasses at some point, but it took awhile before I went back to the eye doctor. When I dinally did, my eyes had improved and the eye doctor said I didn't need glasses.
I never said that wanting to make money made someone "a 'lesser' sort of person." I definitely want to make money, but I don't want to work in an industry I hate or don't really care about either. I still believe that a person who loves what they do will be a better employee. I don't have any statistics to back that up, but I have seen it happen with other people: those that liked what they did, for the most part, excelled and performed well. Those that hated what they did and only did it for the money, eventually became the bad seed within the company, quit, or was fired. I also believe that now that the IT/software industry isn't all rosey, those that choose to major in CS, really want to be there, which should produce better-qualified network admins and programmers.
When I first saw the story, I was upset (hence my previous post), but as I think about it a little more objectively, maybe this is a good thing. So getting a job in the IT and software industry is tough, people are being laid off, and jobs are being outsourced. Maybe at this point, the people that are majoring in computer science REALLY want to do it. The hi-tech industry needs people that really have the desire to work in that field, not a bunch of people going into a major because it's the next big money-maker (MCSE certification anyone?).
I think we're all missing an important point: yes, the ads are annoying with all the Flash, etc., but it's the web sites that we are visiting that are allowing the ads to be displayed. We should really be pissed at the web sites for allowing the Flash and pop-ups to be used on their sites!
I don't think Amazon started getting shipments READY until today. My status finally changed this morning to "Shipping Soon." You would think they could have started shipping the orders a few days before release so we would receive them on the day of the release! Now, it looks like I won't get mine until Wednesday!
I didn't quite think of it in that way...Interesting. If that's the case, and I believe your right, the advertiser should be a little more concerned about forcing their advertisements on people that are going out of their way to block pop-up ads. If they really want consumers to buy their goods, they should find a better way to advertise. Using less-than-ethical advertising methods will eventual alienate the other 80%.
Obviously, the 20% of the people using the ad blocking software don't want to see the pop-ups, so why are the ad companies trying to defeat the ad blocking software? It's been effective for them with the current 80% of the users who don't use ad blocking software, so quit trying to make those of us who don't want to see the ads view them. You STILL won't get our business!
They are being earned by these Indians due to the fact that the Indians can do the jobs better.
Doing a better a job? I don't think that's it. They might be doing just as good a job (and sometimes an inferior job -- so says my brother-in-law who had to fix their programming mistakes), but the working wage of $12,000 a year is why high tech jobs are being outsourced to Indian companies.
I would imagine they are thinking that once they reimplement Sitefinder, they can sell advertising space to all of the.com registrars. If someone wants to be at the top, they have to pay a premium. They'll find a way to make money with it somehow!
I don't understand the deal with windows media player. You can use different software to play media files (the Playa, WinAMP, etc.), so what's the big deal?
So it wasn't any big deal a few years ago when Windows 95 was bundled with IE because I could use Netscape or Mosaic to view HTML pages? I'm sorry, what's the number 1 browser on Windows today? IE...

One I like: Wapsi Square by Paul Taylor.
There's a BitTorrent for VectorLinux at http://www.mininova.org/tor/80583
I also have Comcast, but I experience an outage at least once a month and sometimes more. In fact I just had one two nights ago!

when every other news article talks about jobs being outsourced and the layoffs that are happening all over the place, most recently at HP.

SCO has been backed into a corner so they're striking at anything to survive. The end is near and they can see it coming...
