Really, I think programming should theoretically be taught from a theoretical standpoint, but really, modelling something in a flowchart manner went out in the 70's. Your best bet is to keep on upping the complexeties of the programs until you get to something that 50% of the kids are floundering on, then you should introduce flowcharts... instead of making kids flowchart everything so that they get bored of it before it ever becomes useful.

  15. Re:See the original film. on Review: Insomnia · · Score: 1

I really hate people who always say the original is better than the film it was based on.
For example. La Jette on which Army of the 12 Monkeys was based on, 12 Monkeys was much better-- the original was a photo essay, not anywhere close to a movie, but every time it comes up, some scenester will point out that they liked the original 'french' version better. As well, Gone in 60 seconds, a remake of an australian cult classic by the same name, while the original has some cultish appeal, the remake is much more entertaining and tighter of an action film. Vanilla Sky, a remake of the spanish Open Your Eyes, also an improvment.
I have seen the original Insomnia, it is in norwegian, subtitled for english, and the cinematography is poor. I found the remake to be much better. Just as in the case of Open Your Eyes, which was also subtitled, the director didn't make many changes to the film, except 'americanizing' it and adding more money to it's production value, so you could argue that the director wasn't very artistic in those cases, however to argue that the original insomnia is "A much better film" is ludacris. Anyone who doesn't speak Norwegian and didn't see this when it came out in Norway in 1997 won't think this film is better, unless they are being an art-film poser.

  16. First year recomendations. on Subversive Gifts for New College Students? · · Score: 3, Informative

As a first year college student, living off-campus with some friends, here is my suggestions.
First, make sure you have maintenance tools, like a hammer, screwdriver, nails, good scissors, and maybe a utility knife.
You will need stuff to get the bills done with: envelopes and stamps and a little hanging file thing to keep track of stuff you get. Trust me, you should save at least 3 months of crap, like reciepts and contracts so that you can return something if you never use it or get out of something that you don't need [like a water-cooler rental agreement].
Laundry supplies: quarters, soap, and most importantly a good hiding spot for your quarters to prevent your quarters from wandering off on your roommate's wash day.
You need cleaning supplies, an extra shower curtrain or two, a mop, sponges for the dishes, some of those 1000 flushes things and that 'clean shower' spray-- basically anything that makes it easier on you when you need to clean up.
Then, get a good book shelf and desk. Maybe you don't study at a desk at home, but when you get to college you're gunna have a lot more papers to deal with, a lot more stuff to file and organize and it really helps to have a central place rather than under the bed to put everything. Also, you will amass a nice collection of books, because the bookstore never seems to want to give you more than $10 for that intro to psych. book and it would be a shame to sell it back and it will be useful someday right?
Not a material item, but something very important to consider: If you are picking a roommate from your home town, you should ask yourself "what does their room look like"? Does it look about as clean as yours? Do they do any chores at their house? Because more often than not, if their room is a shitpile at their parent's house, it will be twice a shitpile at their new dorm/apartment, so you should be prepared --unless you also like to live in less than sparkling conditions.
The single most important thing is earplugs. Enough for you and your roomate. Some people don't fall asleep too easily, and this really helps.

  17. Why I don't like this essay. on The Empire Stumbles · · Score: 1

    Look at these two sentences:

What happened? You can hardly call Clones a failure, but seeing it seems as much a reflex as a choice. And the grosses are below expectations, where as Spider-man is re-defining what a mega-hit movie is.

Usually, and is used to combine two subjects or predicates together into one sentence. In this case he began a sentence with and, which is discouraged in basic writing classes because it is hard to use it well. I think Jon Katz didn't use it very well at all in this case.

What tense is each part of this sentence in?

I think Lucas and his movies have outgrown their audience, losing relevance to the young, the real avatars of culture, and are suffocating under their own enormous inertia and weight.

Past, present, present. It just doesn't flow. The second clause needs a qualifying preposition to really keep it moving.

Then, there is the dashes. 16 of them. That's quite a few dashes. I think he over uses this and makes his piece seem more like a a monologue you would hear coming out of a pseudo-intellectual at a coctail party rather than someone who has any grasp of the written english language. You can't write like you talk.

    Several possible reasons.

Is this a sentence? Transitions are an important part of any piece of writing. They are used to link ideas between eachother. Jon Katz should look into them. You can find a handy list of them in any beginner's writing book.

Since when is jokier a word? It doesn't even sound right when you say it out loud. Check out dictionaries and thesaurauses. They have lists of words to describe the concepts that you are thinking.

Hans Solo. Maybe you did run it through a spell checker? Next time, try a grammar checker... and don't just hit change for every occurance.

I would have given him a C+ and used up a lot of red ink on this paper. Nothing special here. No real ideas. Sounds like he read Newsweek and the New York Times and then maybe some blogs about the new Star Wars movie and somehow came out with bunch ideas that he somehow decided, if he were to put them down on paper, would be considered original.
