BRILLIANT! This is spot on. Learn Universe/Unidata (IBM's version of pick) -- IBM lets you download the docs and the full system for free. No youngsters are getting into this industry and, if you look (maybe in some unlikely places), there is billable work and shops who are desperate for staff willing to commit to learning a system that has no IDE.

    Bzzt. Wrong.

Europe is struggling to implement 3G because they aggressively standardized early and now the infrastructure costs to upgrade to 3G are too high. The US is in flux with competing technologies. The one that has the most features for the most reasonable price will win. There was a TechCentral column about this recently.

My god, I am/was a hard-core b5 fanboy during the original broadcast but afterwards I look back and think two things: 1-he did a great job making up stuff as he went along and actors dropped out and 2-jms can't write dialog that's not horribly stilted to save his life.

I shudder now listening to some of the heroic monologues Sheridan and Ivanova and (oh geez) Delenn made.

I *liked* the show a lot. G'kar and Londo kick freaking ass.

But Sisko and Garak and...DS9 is simply a richer, fuller story. Less preachy (which is incredible after TNG) than B5 and more fun too!

We (my partner and I) have 20 programmers that work for our very own foreign-owned company in Vietnam.

Our guys are *good*. They're smart, constantly learning new things and are quite dedicated. At need, they willingly work late hours for special projects and accelerated deadlines.

But one thing that makes our projects work so well is that we think of it (as another poster said) as a **long** commute. One of us is there for about two weeks every month. Houston to Saigon averages about $1000-1100 per flight. It is a *required* business expense for us.

And it's a two-way commute: we're very anxious to get individual staff members over here as soon as we can (lots of visa problems thus far). Not only do we want to get them property indoctrinated with US business practices (!) but we want to show them that a Houston summer is at *least* as unpleasant as one in Saigon. :-)

JMS writes horrid dialogue for Sheridan and Delenn. If I hear "Someone once said..." or "As someone once told me..." ever again, I'll scream.

The end of the Shadow War may have been intellectually satisfying but it was *not* satisfying on a visceral level. Turning great and powerful enemies into whiny children in ten minutes...bah. And who really gave a damn about Byron's telepaths? Not me.

The key is that the folks in VietNam work for us and have for a long time. Plus we visit them *every* month. We maintain tight communication via email, wiki, chat and the rare conference call. We have found an excellent manager and some *stellar* programmers. And we treat them well.

I can see where some people have problems: particularly when they're seeking silver bullet solutions. I think outsourcing, especially overseas, is tough to do ad hoc: it requires a relationship, an understanding of cultures, patience, and a *lot* of communication.
