Think about it though, the average user is not currently pirating this stuff either. Therefore these measures are aimed at the "advanced user" who will know exactly where to look for info on cracking it...and I can bet they all know how to use newsgroups as well.
My parents and grandparents are not copying material now, nor will they if/when these news flags are in place. The people who are currently doing it, will still be doing it.
How long will it take for someone to figure out how to strip this flag out using a piece of software on a PC (or hardware or firmware mod on a standalone unit) and then be able to record it without caring if this flag is set?
I'd bet within days, the first option, and maybe weeks or months on the second. This is not going to help anyone in the long run, same as Macrovision doesn't help anymore when it comes right down to it.
Yes, they can spend 16 hours in front of the video games...but if you really look at games, you're getting constant feedback. Audio, visual, emotional, sometimes physical (force feedback) so there is always something to keep their attention.
Games are repetitive, but provide TONS of feedback to the players. I'm not throwing around acronyms with having no idea what I mean. Damn people who respond without thinking about what they just read, perhaps you should think before you open your mouth. Or at least go read a little about ADD/ADHD. here's the first site that came up on Google..have fun.
I have argued many times that kids who are addicted to video games and play them all day are diagnosed as having ADD these days. Honestly, I know there were kids 15-20 years ago being diagnosed with ADD, but the number has skyrocketed. I have a friend who is a teacher (4th grade) and she says almost 1/4 of her class "has ADD".
These kids just need to get out more, and experience the wonders of being outside, and using their imaginations to play games. When I was a kid my mom only let me play games for a short time after dinner in the evenings. When it was nice out, I had to go out and get exercise. Kids these days are (on average) heavier, lazier, and play more video games. I honestly think most kids who are misdiagnosed with ADD are just not getting enough exercise because they're addicted to games. The 30 second attention span is gone, screw that now we have a 2 second attention span. You see it in games, TV, movies...
Let's get these kids outside and have them exercise and use their own imaginations to have fun, and not make them go on ritalin or some other drug (not sure if they still use ritalin) just because they aren't getting exercise.
Having driven a call with no power steering (93 ford escort), I can say that this is not as big of a deal as it seems. In fact, the no power steering actually makes almost no difference when you're traveling highway speeds. Anyone who has driven a car with no power steering knows this is the case. The lack of power breaks would concern me more.
The bigger problem would be that on many new cars, when you shut off the car, the steering wheel engages the anti-theft lock and you can no longer steer the car at all. Trust me, I found this out on one occasion trying to be "stealthy" when returning from a late night excursion without my parents knowing. I almost hit a tree in the driveway before slamming on the (no longer powered) breaks.
I would say try to put it in neutral first, then if that doesn't work try turning off the ignition, but only into the accessory position, so you don't lose steering. If neither of those is an option, pull that emergency hand brake and burn it up, or else burn up the regular breaks or throw the car in reverse.
If all else fails, find a nice long guard rain on the highway and grind the side of the car into it until you slow down.:-) Better to do lots of financial damage than to lose your life.
All that said, I still don't ever want to test my theory in person, that would be freaky. I often wonder just how much I would trust a car if it was doing all of the driving itself. I like to have control over where I am going, and how fast.
Yeah, we need pictures? Like a picture through a telescope of the lunar lander would look that much different than the picture of the lunar lander while they were on the moon? I mean, we already HAVE pictures. They're just from a different angle than the telescope image would be. Not like it would be hard to fake that.
I fully believe we were on the moon, I don't know why there are so many skeptics really, I know it was at a time that was "too convenient" in the scheme of politics and everything, but there are a lot of other things that I find much harder to believe, that I have no physical proof of at all.
That explains the numerous meteor showers lately...they're just cleaning house or flushing the space toilet.
Really though, won't most of the stuff they have there just burn up quickly upon reentry? can't they just get some big nets and laso all of the garbage together for a day or two and then give it a push towards Earth?
Good job. I buy that. But I am sure whatever statistic this is taken from considers "severe withdrawal" and not just a headache or craving. So you're saying about 1/100 people who go through severe withdrawal can die. I would not argue against that. And I certainly don't mean to say that alcoholism isn't a serious thing...I can relate personally to it. I'm just saying that it gets a little too much hype, because I personally think everyone needs to take responsability for themselves. Stop blaming weak will, or addictive behavior on something or someone else. If you have a strong will, you can make it out by gradually weening yourself off in most cases.
Note to self: Slashdot readers have abandoned being a "community" and have turned into an elitest bunch of pricks.
There, now I know that you're too good for me you anonymous coward. I shall never post again. Oh wait, maybe some comments get modded up because most of the really insightful people (like yourself) post as anonymous.
Come on, grow up. I took two psych classes in college back in the day. One was entirely on how drugs affect the brain. I do not, however, consider myself an expert in the field. Too bad when my comments (opinions) don't mesh with yours that I end up getting insulted. If Slashdot isn't insightful enough for you, go find another place to surf to.
Keep in mind...if a post is overall scored positively, then the majority of people must find it to be good enough to read. Thus, you are in the minority. At least I don't post shit about the GNAA or whatever the current BS is.
So you're saying that every headache I have is caused by lack of caffeine? I don't get a headache more than once a month...I don't drink coffee more than 10 times a month (at most I would way). It seems I am lacking a little bit in the caffeine headaches department by those numbers. I don't drink much caffeinated pop either, the occasional mountain dew is on the menu, but I am mostly a diet pop, low caffeine guy when I get pop.
I don't ignore headaches...I just don't get them often. When I do, I usually wake up with them...and generally because I am severely dehydrated after a night of drinking. A few glasses of water and some breakfast and they go away no problem. A lot of post-drinking headaches (after binge drinking) are associated with being dehydrated, so drinking a bunch of water before you go to bed will help significantly with hang overs.
I do not, however, get a headache in the morning when not drinking coffee/juice/water. I just feel off for a bit in the morning, like when you skip shaving or skip showering or whatever your routine in the morning is.
I must be the exception to the rule. I drink coffe on average three times a week. And when I do, it is only one cup a day. It's when I get to work and realize I forgot my juice/water that I normally bring in to drink. For me, it is more about having something to sip on in the morning while I read the news, and settle in for the day. I can honestly say that no matter if I drink coffee for an entire month, I do not have "the need" to drink a cup on that next day. Water will do just fine.
I can honestly say that even though it does clearly have an effect on me (I get a little jittery and feel way too high strung after a cuppa joe) I would bet that most people would only have "withdrawal symptoms" for a day at most. I'm guessing (very unscientifically) that for most people the need for coffee is a routine. Try switching to water or juice or even decaf coffee to see if you feel any different.
I can see where someone who drinks a couple pots of coffee a day might get headaches or something if they just quit all at once, but this could be said for anything...sugar, caffeine, salty snacks, you name it. Your body is going to be used to dealing with anything you take in in excess. Once that excessive amount is gone, you will notice, at least for a little while. I'm not sure it's really groundbreaking news just because Johns Hopkins told us they found it out.
I certainly don't think it needs to be entered into the DMS just yet, just because some people get a headache from too little/much caffeine. (yes it happens when you get too much too, at least for me) I know people will say it is like alcoholism, where it's the same kinds of symptoms and what not. But I don't think alcoholism is quite as bad as people make it out to be. (and before I go any farther, let me tell you that I do have two alcoholics in my close family) I think that even though some people may be more likely to develop alcoholism, the blame and responsibility still falls on them. Every person has the ability to stop doing destructive behavior. You just have to learn what your limits are and govern them youself....but that's another topic for another day.
I don't remember the exact numbers unfortunately, but I took a class on techtonics and volcanos in college and you would be surprised how bad for the ozone volcanos are. From what I remember the prof told us that a major volcanic event does more damage to the ozone than all of the chemicals that we humans have put up there in the past century.
I wish I could remember the numbers, or find a site but no such luck.
Ok, good point, I had never seen a stat on it. But still, adding a single computer to the network and tripling the amount of work done! that's still pretty impressive if you ask me!
I think that they should take this computer just for one day and set it to run Seti@home...that's be a hell of a lot of searching for aliens right there. I bet they'd run out of packets to send you!
By then, I'm planning on the entire global computer network to be seemlessly linked and networked so that I no longer need to save it locally, or back it up to disk. Distributed storage will have a whole new meaning.
That way, only one person has to have the entire Simpsons...or only one person has to have the pr0n if you prefer.
I'm only kidding of course...but who's to say that 1TB is even going to be worth having in another 6 years? I expect to carry that in my pocket on a pen drive by then.
But after reading the article, the one thing that sticks out to me is "What if the test suite is flawed, or has a bunch of bugs in it?" So then the test suite that has gone out to everyone unmodified, and then it circulates a few hundred times before people find the bug...then you have tons of stuff designed to work with a flawed test suite and when the test suite is fixed, there is the potential that previously working code (tested with the suite) will be broken! Maybe I am just a pessimist....
Yeah, because we all know that none of the pedophiles out there have kids of their own who might leave this key plugged in, or laying on the desk for dad/mom to use?
This is dumb, this does about as much good as the pages before porn sites telling people to not enter if they are not 18. Big deal, a USB key that tells someone I am young. It'll be 2 days maximum until some geek gets ahold of one and then you can buy them online for $25 +S/H.
AT&T have chosen a few people that they know are going to develop things the way they want in order to shape the early market into an AT&T furure?
I'm sorry but why is this important news? It seems pretty obvious that AT&T would want to get a foot into the door. And I don't really like the idea of AT&T having their proprietary stuff into the framework any more than I like Sony forcing their tech into the next gen of Dvd. We need to get the standards set early, not get 10 companies with 10 ideas.
Considering they still provide support for and updates for other versions of Windows, and also the fact that IE is so tightly integrated into all Windows OS's, I think it is safe to say that if yo continue to run updates from Windows Update you will be fine.
In fact, it seems like every time I visit windows update, I am forced to upgrade IE in order to run the updates. If it is indeed true, I think thet the previous poster is correct in assuming that once they get the uproar from the busniess (Win2000) users they will change the story...
