But no, instead I am greeted with Civ IV, which I am sure will be graphically stunning, and totally engrossing...but where's the little green blob hopping across the road!? The sad thing is that most games today don't live up to Centipede, Asteroids, Missile Command and the other classics. Those were the good old days.

Let's not go too far back though...Pong blows. :-)

    C. Don't write top secret nuclear information on a computer in a coffee shop. Wait and do your banking at home.
    PUBLIC TERMINALS ARE PUBLIC...NOT PRIVATE

If it is a home computer, I don't blame Google for building a tool that does this. There are other similar programs that search through emails, or search through word documents or whatever. This just happens to do a lot of different little searches all in one.

I blame the companies and web sites that leave cookies or passwords laying around for the insecurities. I blame the person trying to hide a top secret word document on the computer. (DUH it's not safe!!!) And I blame the person saving their chat history where the Google toolbar can see it. If you don't want the google toolbar on your machine, do not install it and take precautions for keeping others from doing it, like any other piece of software. I believe you can also set up the Google toolbar to ignore certain apps and certain directories. So you can still use it, and just ignore the TOP SECRET folder on the C:\ drive.

I am a relative novice to the Linux world, but have installed various versions of linux over the past few years to try. The ones I have used briefly are Suse, Mandrake, and RedHat.

I found each had their own little quirks and bonuses just from the short time I used each, but I have never gone to the trouble of finding drivers for things like my scanner, my digital camera, and my printer for any of them. Would it be worth my time to try this version, or is there a better package out there for someone like me who wants to possibly dual boot for awhile while making the switch and learning the ropes?

    thanks to anyone who replies.

The main point I see here though, is that if Mp3 players that come preinstaled with Linux get popular, then companies will have valid ground to stand on for banning people from bringing them into the work place as a security measure. Some companies already do it with iPods, just imagine if they get wind of this type of player.

I have had the luck of actually being able to ride on one of these for about 10 minutes about a year ago. They are incredibly easy to use once you get used to trusting it....however...I would not recommend getting it for anyone who has trouble walking up steps, or has a bad sense of balance.

I found it a bit tricky to get on at first, because unless you're pretty careful, the thing tends to start moving before you're ready for it. Also, it really doesn't take much to get it to move forward or backward, so not having a good sense of balance once on it could send you in directions you're not expecting.

Don't get me wrong, I loved riding the thing and I think after an hour or two of riding and steering it around I could have mastered the thing. But I am 25 years old, and have a decent sense of balance. It was not a problem for me to control. The thing is very heavy though, and once you're off and the motors are disengaged it is very tricky to load in a vehicle or "park" in the corner.

Perhaps not the best thing for an elderly person. A walker or a cane, or even a wheelchair would be more suitable, not to mention that all three of those things are welcome inside most places (I have yet to see a Segway driving through the grocery store). But for a younger disabled person who has strength to control it and deal with moving it around it could mean a whole new life and way of getting around.

I would love to buy one of these, it would pay itself off in a week just charging for rides!

A lot of what makes the difference in each printer such that they can tell the printer that was used will be based on mechanical variances between printers. And I would have to guess that if I drop my printer from a height of about 6 ft, there will be enough mechanical difference in the way it printed before I dropped it that their test (at least the mechanical part) will be unable to detect that it was my printer.

For that matter, I would have to think that switching ink cartridges (or drums), switching gears between printers, switching paper trays, possibly even print drivers will have a large enough effect that this method will not be able to correctly identify nearly as many printers correctly as they claim given the fact that conterfeiters will be trying to beat them at their own game.

I am not saying everyone will have a bad experience...I am saying that I didn't want to roll the dice and try.

I will point out that the recent 4G iPod model has had some audio problems, something about the audio port giving feedback or hearing the hard drive spin up through your headphones. I have not had these problems, but some sites say that the rate of "failure" of the 4G iPods could be as high as 30%. Keep in mind though, that this is not a catostrophic failure of the device, just an inconvenient sound when spinning the hard drive up.

No device will have a zero failure rate. But I am happy with my choice. (as I would have been if I had bought a Karma and had no troubles)

  18. This review makes me glad... on Rio Karma User Review · · Score: 0, Troll

It makes me glad that I read around a bit before purchasing my MP3 player.

I had narrowed it down to the Karma and an iPod 20GB. I was all set to go with the Rio because I have previously owned two other Rio flash based players and loved them both. I also loved the idea of an ethernet port on the dock.

After reading reviews and message boards, I found that probably 6/10 reviewers (ie customers) were having their hard drives die with months. People all over the web were saying that right after the 3 month waranty period, it just died.

So I was still fighting with the decision, and just telling myself that I would get the extended warranty, and hope I was one of the 40% that did not die...then the death blow came. Apple lowered the price of the 20GB model to the now standard $299. It was a deal breaker, at only $50 more than the Rio, and tons of positive reviews, I went and ordered an iPod that night. Incidently, I was the most avid anti-apple person in the known universe until I got my iPod...I hated the fact that all of the Apple products was so pretty...but so expensive. After owning an iPod and loving it so much, I'm not ready to switch to a Mac yet, but I don't bad mouth Mr. Jobs any more. Well done Apple!

Anyway, the moral is always do your own research before buying...it saved me $250 in my opinion.

Maybe the point was more that just because there is always a new processor out there, doesn't mean people are going to buy it. Intel can only sell so many fast processors, for so many years and expect that everyone will want to upgrade.

My point was that since a lot of people currently have 1.5Ghz and faster machines, and there is no software that really NEEDS faster ones (I know high end games run better on faster, but that is not a need, just a desire for most) Why should anyone go buy a 3.5Ghz machine when the 2Ghz machine is running just dandy?

I think most people here at Slashdot can read between the lines a little, and form an intelligent opinion on that they read without me spelling it out word for word. Perhaps that is why it was modded interesting...but then again, I didn't mod it so I don't know. Maybe it was just interesting to some people.
