  1. Become a Leader on How Do I Become an IT/IS Manager? · · Score: 1

The main skill you need if you wish to become management has barely anything to do with the fields you have flitted between. I've been in the industry since the late 90s and have only seen one (1) (besides me) under 30 person become management, and that was because a) She was one of the best technologically rounded people I've ever known and b) She knew how to communicate requirements both to the Client (Management) and to the Geeks doing the work in a diplomatic fashion. She was also very organized, driven and able to talk to anyone about the projects she was heading. If you can't bridge that gap between the plebs and the geeks in a graceful, organized and illuminating manner, you won't get anywhere and people will dislike you on both sides of a project.

Sorry if I sound dubious about your question, I'd say 99.999% of the Geeks who want to move up to Management aren't going to be good at it because they are inept at diplomacy (I'm not talking the board game) and the creative thinking that you need to have to deal with interpersonal relationships. You're not only dealing with project requirements and timing, you're dealing with egos (which are wild and varied in the Geek community; much easier to judge someone NOT in the technical field). You need to be very flexible in your thinking about situations (which most Geeks aren't, thank you logical thinking!), and be prepared to change based on someone's bad mood and not take it personally.

I skipped from developer to owner of a company, which is a whole new level of diplomacy (read as insanity). Just know that what you're thinking about doing shouldn't be taken lightly and might not be as easy to jump into with your limited credentials. Take some business classes and see if it is of interest to you still.

  6. Re:No internet users on More on ICANN · · Score: 1

that's the point...your aunt shirley won't be able to be on the board...only corporations and governments would be allowed to be boardmembers.

    Here's ICANN's original mission statement:
"The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is a technical coordination body for the Internet. Created in October 1998 by a broad coalition of the Internet's business, technical, academic, and user communities, ICANN is assuming responsibility for a set of technical functions previously performed under U.S. government contract by IANA and other groups.

Specifically, ICANN coordinates the assignment of the following identifiers that must be globally unique for the Internet to function:

    Internet domain names
    IP address numbers
    protocol parameter and port numbers
In addition, ICANN coordinates the stable operation of the Internet's root server system.

As a non-profit, private-sector corporation, ICANN is dedicated to preserving the operational stability of the Internet; to promoting competition; to achieving broad representation of global Internet communities; and to developing policy through private-sector, bottom-up, consensus-based means. ICANN welcomes the participation of any interested Internet user, business, or organization."

What they're wanting to whack it back to is "We no longer want to be private sector, we want to be government and business sponsored. No more "internet users"." Pretty much selling out to whoever will give them the $$. The "bad" part about this is that this could lead to some serious corruption in terms of domain name disputes, ie. small guy has big guy's "RIGHTFUL DOMAIN NAME!", big guy pays business guy, big guy wins. Right now its fairly democratic...in the future...it may not be.

So I'm wondering, how many girls played SF2 on a religious basis? I picked up Mortal Kombat and Killer Instinct as well...I still play in arcades, mostly for pinball, but its rare to see a girl actually PLAYING a game instead of hanging on to some videogame playing guy.

As for the "gangsta" image the guys in the movie have...well, they look like suburbanite wannabes. The socioeconomics of videogame playing doesn't seem like it would allow for "real" gangstas. There was one seriously looking geek guy in there, that I would imagine rebuilds his kernel every other day.

Not only is it a word-for-word redux of Pulp Fiction with Star Wars characters, it SOUNDS like it was read off of a script. The Darth Maul character was so pathetically nasally I barely made it through the entire thing without wanting to choke him.

    ALTHOUGH:
The animation and drawings were decent. There were some issues with timing, but in all it was okay. I applauded the character choices as well.

    IN CONCLUSION:
Getting a better soundman or sound software (sound forge rules!) AND better people who know their lines instead of reading it off a script, would have made the entire thing a ton better.

I'd give it 1.5 stars out of 4.

They're the same people who used BLINK tags on their site before it was deprecated. They're also the same people who click on the Shock The Monkey banner ads.

The internet is becoming exactly what everything that's creative and stimulating becomes: a marketroid and businessperson's paradise. I know geeks don't get off on bright shiny swirly things (hell, most of them like blue and metal coloured websites), but the perogative of capitalism isn't to cater to a niche group when you can take on the whole world.

Doing a search on Google for "recycling computers" takes a person to a lot of "we'll take your old computer and shuffle it off to little kids at 4-H for reuse". There's this game that lawyers play called "See What We Can Get Out of Them". This letter is the first round of this game. Lawyer then sends nasty sounding letter to the evil person supposedly violating whatever laws demanding as many outlandish things as possible.

This first round makes receiver of letter feel uncomfortable, and most law-abiding citizens feel obligated to cough up their gonads right then and there for fear of being prosecuted/embroiled in controversy. This part is psychological and more for shock effect and seeing what Lawyer can get out of you.

I work with a lawyer on a daily basis. Said lawyer does this kind of crap just for fun to see how much said lawyer can get away with. People will do anything not to be sued, etc. and it seems that lawyers just like to watch people squirm.

I do believe that NOA has no right to ask you for the merchandise without a judgement of some kind. Quoting the DMCA is great and all, but there hasn't been litigation of any kind and they can't make up terms for your innocence/guilt. You haven't been charged with anything, this isn't a case that's gone to court yet.

People need to realize they're shooting themselves in the foot.
