Keep in mind the judges that rendered this decison get a fat pension FOR LIFE - they have no idea what it will mean to have to choose between a fuel bill and a box of mac and cheese.

  6. porn, religion, economics on Displaced Techies Find Sex Sells, And Pays · · Score: 1
Porn is getting popular because of the major religious attitudes that foster a heavy dose of repression on each of us since birth (well, most of us). Humans are just animals that cook their food, and animals are for the most part highly sexual creatures. We live in a western european christian world where god lives in heaven, has granted man dominion over all things with an afterlife e-ticket out, and has made sex dirty.

Does anyone really buy this anymore ?

    why ?

I'd like to believe its all sacred-sex included-but I don't think the boom in internet sex really reflects this. And its funny to see the powerhouses of the economic world (guns, power, drugs) all pretend to belong to a religion that was started by a poor man walking around teaching each other to be nice and love one and all. Jesus kicked the money changers out of the temple for a reason-don't ever forget that.

Now the moneychangers run the show, and religion keeps them all happy god-fearing cows.

I haven't been too experienced with the nuances of the legal interpretations of previous prior art patents-are there any worth reading ? It seems from some of the other comments that implimentation details can circumvent this whole issue, but I don't buy it til I see it...

  11. technological innovations defined/limited? on Busting Microsoft's Patent On Web-Polls? · · Score: 1
    19. The Government's conclusion is thus to reaffirm the principle that patents are for technological innovations. Software should not be patentable where there is no technological innovation, and technological innovations should not cease to be patentable merely because the innovation lies in software.

So just How, Exactly, does one interpret technological innovation to be defined ? And how does this limit future implementations of a similar idea ? Is this system innovative since it stores results in a specific table structure, and are you patenting the table structure specifically or the concept or what ? It seems, in the physical world, that you can patent a knock off idea - look how many types of tools there are that are almost the same yet slightly different (vise grips ? special purpose multi-tools ?) Why would intelectual property be different. Can I patent the *idea* of a solution without a specific one ?

How different would an implimentation have to be, and who determines if it is 'different' ? Is it different to run the same type of system in a different language, when that actual implimentation would be completely altered ? Or is this patented at a non-language dependant level ?

(hey, let's use computers to manipulate numbers!!!...ENIAC's first patent ??) Perhaps we just need to keep feeding the lawyers...one wonders if it isn't time for the people who actually innovate to draw some lines in the sand somehow and try to get lawmakers to understand that this is not acceptable.

  13. ex utah res speaks ! on Do You Consider Your Social Life When You Choose A Career? · · Score: 2
As someone who recently fled utah, I have a few interesting specific comments-

The state of Utah is probably the best for the outdoor recreationalist geek-incredible mountain climbing, rock climbing, and skiing are all within minutes of downtown (repeat-MINUTES).

The state of Utah is also arguably the scariest socially- they have the highest teen pregnancy rate in the nation yet the state legislature (which is church controlled-make no mistake...they tell you who to vote for) voted NOT to teach sex ed in schools. I have met 19 year old women that do NOT understand how conception occurs. The legislature voted not to appoint a special poligamy prosecutor in utah, though they have a lot of it around...

The state sold the church a big section of main street, which the church promptly went and blocked off and ripped up. People will ask you not to walk down the PUBLIC sidewalk in front of the temple if your appearances aren't up to the standards of the church.

Now don't get me wrong. In all fairness the people I dealt with on an individual basis were all very friendly and enjoyable. But when they get together their actions are somewhat appalling. I left to keep from starting trouble with people who's actions and thoughts I could simply NOT BELIEVE, not because of any liquor laws...

Church and state are to be seperated for a reason...
