Without question the overriding dogma of our (American) society is the corporation. The Corporate culture if you will. The embodiment of capitalism in an individual (how corporations are treated by law). Now this structure is being directly challenged in one area where the product simply does not support any previously built model, information. Our capacity to process and disseminate as well as replicate information has reached what I would have to believe is near the null point. I mean, could it get much easier to share a single thought or bit of information with the entire world (besides lacking the serving power). Becuase of this any good idea can be quickly spread and incorporated into daily lives. Bad ideas have the same potential, but often their nature is their ultimate undoing. To go take it literally, the EnLIGHTenment grows as each person shares the light bulb of eureka with their peers, family, and any random schmoe with a Net connection and some time. Becuase of the Digital nature of this Age, information can be reproduced ad infinitum, and when the supply is infinite, no matter what the demand, the price is zero. I have seen many times the argument, or distinction, between Frees (speech and beer). Yet what about a speech about beer, or more to the point how to make beer. One can, in a special situation, lead to the other directly. This is what we have HERE I was suprised that Katz didn't mention a good example of our new (gnu) culture directly clashing with the old. Linux vs. Windows is the perfect example of a real-time battle between the power of status quo (profit taking corporations) and the power of change (OSS). Even in the face of indisputable fact many will stay with their eyes tight shut against the light, merely becuase that's the way they think it should be, because that's the way it has always been. (of course you all know this, but it's still fun to say) What else to say....oh yeah, if you like music go get MP3Spy before the lawyers do. Another example of information (in this case, art) wanting to be free.
...that we already live in heaven. More information than I could possibly assimilate in 100 lifetimes, sound good me like login.

And soon we'll have all the free software you can shake a PPP at. Of course we'll still have to pay for games, but hopefully they'll soon destroy the movie industry and then The BOX will rule all.
Just to figure out how to make faster computers?! Allright, they just need to keep up with id's law (They will release a game every 18 months that is so cool you have to buy a new faster computer) Really, how many of you have upgraded just to keep playing id stuff? My last four major upgrades coincided with releasess 386/16-->486/50 for Doom 486/50-->P100 Quake P100-->Cyrix 200(sucked, but cheap |at the time|) Quake II Cx200-->Cel333(+ o'clocking) Quake3.
A little thing called MP3Spy. I don't know if many of you use it (Win), but this thing is AMAZING. It basically adds DMX service over a decent bandwidth connection. Including IRC, file-transfer, skin support. This might sound like a hard sell, but this thing is just amazing. Basically finding servers streaming MP3. V1.0 came out last week and I'm expecting a law suit before the end of the month. M$ had a _long way_ to catch up before they can offer something like this, if they even want to try. MP3 hasn't even really hit the mainstream yet, which explains the lack of major artists (who, controlled by the BIG5 record co.s, can't) releasing MP3 versions of hit songs. What will kick it off is some garage band, like Nirvana, that just happens to hit the right sound at the right time. They release their album on MP3 and it spreads like the proverbial wildfire. But anyway, back to MP3Spy (which is cooler and easier to use than Quake/GameSpy!, and made by the same guys) this type of software (with Shoutcast or Icecast on the other end) would allow situations like a band releasing/showcasing thier music 24/7 on a dedicated server. Since the music is arranged by genre someone might just stumble onto them and boom there's one fan.
I don't think M$ has the clout at this point to force people to give up MP3. I'm sure (because it's their M.O.) that they just plan on new users, and upgraders, to just accept MSAudio as the default and establish insurmountable markey share from the desktop. What MP3Spy allows, through tight integration with WinAmp, is a simple alternative from end to end. I think (with a good connection) you can go from nothing to DMX on steroids in about 15 minutes. That's freakin' amazing. And will last until right about 30 minutes after the RIAA finds out about it and sics their attack dogs on 'em. Lawyers are the most dangerous threat to freedom in this country. Anyway, there's 12.5% of a quarter for ya, my own of course.
The Melissa virus proves that security holes can exist in pieces of software. It's just a newer version of the Internet Worm, and I don't remember any MS ware being involved in that.
I believe he was referring to statements that they caught the guy (at least in part) using the unique M$ id that is embedded in each and every Office document. I have had trouble finding stories that mention this specifically, but have seen it a couple places. Time, of course, didn't say a thing about it other than mentioning a couple M$ products were involved.
Fusion seems to be the much more sensical version of creating power, at least vs. fission. Let's see here "the radioactivity produced by a fusion reactor is 100,000 times less than in an equivalent fission reactor. " That sounds like a plus. Not to mention "Construction of NSTX was completed on budget and months ahead of schedule, Richardson noted." That happens a lot for gov. funded ops. And the best/funniest "That proved the reactor could create a plasma with its giant magnets and just one of its heating systems, which uses an electrical current, like a toaster or space heater." One helluva toaster, eh. And how 'bout the big 'space heater' in the sky (a.k.a. the Sun)? This guy should go on the road. Anyway, clean energy you get from water, that doesn't go boom? Sounds worthwhile. Let's get Big Bill Gates to drop a billion or so on it. It fits with his ultimate plan (i.e. become GOD). I'm trying to thing, have there ever been any large scale wars that started as small conflicts in Europe? Do people get pissed and hold grudges when you bomb them? Do many countries have nuclear capabilities now? The asteroids I'm worried about are the ones in our leaders heads. We can always send teams of bad-ass drillers to take on the interstellar ones (man, they must get killer bud in L.A)
I don't know about the overall validity of this site, but it seems to present a much different side of the conflict (i.e. Why do you keep bombing empty buildings 350 miles away from Kosovo?)
It takes more than one perspective to see things objectively. That's simple reality folks.
Why would anyone spend the time and money to create a "better" format? Can they patent it and make money? No. There is no reason to make a better one. And without a reason, nothing will change(i.e. MP3 will have total dominance as a digital music format)
How about a Rio with 512M. How do your 74 minutes stack up now? How about a Rio half it's size now? That's what we'll be seeing in 3-4 years (hopes). The future for MP3 is even brighter than the present. Does your computer have a MD player? Does your computer play MP3? How many people own computers? How many own MD? It's really an apple to oranges comparison, but only until the 2nd and 3nd gen. of players come out. Then we'll have MP3 players that have a record button. There go voice recorders. I like MD, but when it comes down to useability (yea it's a word, you know what it means) MP3 and the new players will become dominant. Don't forget that it's a FREE format, digital too. MP3 long and prosper.
Hmm, what do we have in MP3, a widely-used, high-quality (so I'm not an audiophile, sue me), FREE format. Who is going to replace it? Is anyone going to give up something free for something they have to pay for? Does (extreme) quality matter over price? When I can burn a 500 cd collection onto a single DVD what else do I need?
I can't believe I read posts from people that agreed with this article. Many posted that "something" would come along quickly (within 5 years?) and replace it. What and who would do it? The only reason someone would come up with a new standard would be to make it proprietary, and to make money off it. Does ANYONE want to pay for something they have been getting for free? There is no motivation to replace MP3, none. With my DSL line I can download MP3s faster than I can listen to them, so making better compression isn't an issue(and soon I can burn them to DVDs). MP3 already has mindshare and I would have to say TOTAL MARKET DOMINANCE for digitally transferred music. To quote from the article Although MP3 files are compressed, they are sized in megabytes, not kilobytes. Until broadband is ubiquitous, MP3 can't fly. It needs to stream so people can get the music immediately, not half an hour after they begin downloading. To stream? This guy is an idiot. I want to download it and then have it for eternity. What will widespread broadband take, two more years? What is the percentage of/.er's with >256k connections? At least 50% based on what I read. We are the early adopters not the mass market. The mass market isn't listening to MP3 yet (maybe the 15-24s), but they soon will and then the potential to make money will present itself to those who understand it all. MP3 will be around for a long time, simple because there will be no reason or motivation (outside the Open Source community, of course) to replace it. I expect a new mass music paradigm to be built over the next 10-20 years, where (horror of horrors) bands get airplay and sell out shows because they are good and over time, develop a serious following and not because a record industry exec. "discovered" them and marketed the hell out of 'em. That is all.

Getting major companies to embrace Linux will give lusers the confidence to try it out. And then the apps will come. And then their friends will use it. Then they can release multitudes of Games for it because the market will support it. Then bandwidth will be plentiful. Then all is good and there will be peace and harmony....until Linus dies (hey, take a joke)
Any code of conduct whatsoever? If I was in a situation like that, where I had to commit crimes on a regular basis just so I could move out, I would be ashamed of myself.
You should be ashamed of YOURself. No, seriously, you're an asshole. You personify one of the major failings of geekdom, and humanity in general, the inability to see the world from another's perspective. Does it bother you that much that someone who doesn't even know anyone in your tax bracket can do the same job as you? That you might have something in common with someone you believe to be "white trash" as you so eloquently put it. Judging from your statements (which seems trendy considered your opinions were based on a Katz article in Rolling Stone) you have never faced many of the toils these guys not only faced, but triumphed over. If I had to pick teams, I'd take them and kick the everlivin' sh*t out of you, jerk-off.
Not that I'm anywhere near an expert on it, but...
The Momentum that RH gains is all for Linux. Giving them to pour money into a good install and entry level everything is great for the entire community. They CAN'T leverage anything because of the nature of the product. Entry into the market being as ridiculously easy as it is. It gives them greater power to be a Linux portal, if you will, but won't lead to thoughts of global domination.
