Freedom to innovate, my ass. I can't stop smiling. Now let's see how well the courts take it. I know one place you'll see it immediately...Wall Street. From all those "M$ accounting faux paus" comments I gleaned that each point of M$ stock is ~$6,000,000,000. Watch it drop 20 points...
(I'm watching CNBC, and they're just now reading it. I think/. will have the best commentary on this around, so try to keep the biases as home.)
JudgeJ also mentioned that M$ made it a "jolting" experience to change browsers, a very big deal to him.
Should be fun to watch, just try not to panic, it's the downfall of the sentient, M$ was down 1-3/4 when I started writing this post, it's down 3-1/6 now. That's in after hours trading. Now they have a guy from caldera talking about Linux, so I'll post this.
or walking out of it. Make the house be your typical suburbia image. Illustrate graphically that Linux has come from the Virtual Garages of thousands of worldwide developers. "The Next Big Thing" is overused but text to that effect would be nice. "The Ensuing Large Object" or sum such.
This is why. Every day it gets bigger, more robust, and more difficult to stop. Eventually MS will have to bow out to Linux not because Linux will declare war on Windows, but because Windows will simply pale in comparison.
Eventually no one (outside the hardcore geeks) wil l use anything other that IE because that's what works on all the web (if current trends continue and they ARE moving this way). A computer without the 'Net is fairly useless (IMHO), the best way the access the 'Net is through a browser. The browser becomes the most important part of the machine. M$ has realized this and is pushing hard to make the browser the OS and build special hooks so that IE/IIS/Windows is the only way to really access the 'Net. Having surfed the 'Net extensively on both browser on both platforms there is No Question that M$ has a superior product with VASTLY superior third-party support.
You see, one of the most important differences between Windows and Linux is that Windows is all smoke and mirrors (marketing) whereas Linux is an product that is actually well made and capable of delivering on its promises. The public will grow tired of the illusion sooner or later, its all a matter of time.
Every TV show/Movie you have ever enjoyed is mostly smoke and mirrors. Most people DON'T CARE and are more than happy to use smoke and mirrors. Besides, windows (despite it's very many flaws) does work most of the time. I'm a gamer and the doze does games great.
The article illustrated a very good point, people want stuff that "just works", when sites don't they get frustrated and will go back to the herd. Having the pre-eminent browser is the first huge step to desktop acceptance. If you don't want that, then this argument is moot anyway.

And he (IMHO) would think not. Peaceful civil disobedience to achieve a (roughly) political goal, that's all that is being advocated. As far as suing under the GPL goes, this is civil obedience to achieve the same goal.
He is not hypocritical because he is always moving towards the goal, within and without the current law. Using your "enemies" law against them (the GPL,a.k.a the Anti-License License) is a common tactic of the underdog.

I just wrote a rant about this for another story. Totally agreed here. Maybe we should limit the lawyer's cut to 10% and they pay court costs. Of course to do anything to change the system to limit these things would have to be done by and against lawyers, so that might prove a substantial obstacle.
and this is why. For every situation where somebody is wronged in the slightest a gaggle of lawyers wanders over, says "Don't worry about a thing, I'll talk care of you. It won't cost you a dime unless we win." Person says o.k., lawyer goes to work. Somehow the L proves that somebody made a mistake, caused mental anguish (which should NEVER be equated to money), and generally caused someone to have a bad day. Then they argue that these feeling shoulds be compensated with money (of which the L gets 1/3). This adds up so eventually you are trading bad feelings (which everyone gets everyday) for money, which usually represents something of actual value. Eventually you must move to a society where you can't hurt anyone feelings ('cause of the fsckin' liability) or do anything out of the ordinary without fear of being sued into oblivion.
Lawyers and thier greed are the single largest factor in the disintegration of rights and freedom in this country (US).
Unfortunately no one wants to stop suing. Even the originator of this thread, while ranting against restrictions caused by lawsuits, wants to sue the school and take more money because of the already ridiculous nature of the situation.
