Sharing a fast Inet pipe throughout a house will be the push in the next few years. A linux box set up at a router/firewall/personal web/mail makes it that much easier. Set up a box, charge $20/mo. for "admin", and sit back and watch it just work.
MP3 sites are aimed at the teeny-bopper crowd. A bit stupid, as I'd put teeny-boppers in the "CD drive=cup-holder" crowd.
um, hullo? Computers have become tremendously more widespread in the last few years, graybeard. And comp. savvy has followed suit. They're not that tough to use with a few years experience. The one demographic that has shown the largest drop in CD purchases is 13-18. Wonder why that is? Music execs are scared for a very good reason.
That being said, I found this amazing lobster prawn site, full tails and all.
I didn't have a problem installing the server (or tweaking Apache) and I admin NT (and Linux) for a living. The problem comes from a total change of perspective. It would probably be *easier* for a clueful 13 year old to do it from scratch than your average NT admin. Why? There is no baggage, no looking for a c:/, no assumptions, you get to learn from a tabula rasa, not one filled with FUD (which you get from using M$ product extensively).
Is it just me, or did that article sound like there were no other dists in the game?
Yea, how hard could it have been to drop in a couple links. Of course I did like the M$ backhands. Talking about how RH was close in price to the *upgrade* for Windoze. Not to mention NTServer or even BackOffice. As a fairly new convert I like articles like this, a comparison, not a flame-war, at least then you get some facts, not wild opinion and emotion.
C|Net has been pretty hip to the whole thing. Although wasn't that a mistake saying they were based on the 2.3 kernel, isn't that just for developement and masochists?
Without a doubt this is a move towards an AOLOS (maybe that's what they'll call it). That's why this story didn't excite me too much. So it looks like more and more people will believe that AOL IS not only the Internet, but is in fact synonymous with computer.
NC's aren't going to work in the home, they can't make the price point (which seems to hover around $200), and what sane individual wants to rent applications. NC's are the PC equivelent to DIVX, at least for the home market.
Is that the one where they strap scrap metal to the guy to make him weaker, and interrupt his thought process with loud music every few seconds to make him dumber? I could never remember the name of that one.
The Babelfish (a small fish you put in your ear that allows you to understand every species in the universe by devouring the audible noise and excreting the meaning) disproved the Theory of God because having creating something so incredibly useful to the galaxy that can only come from god, violated teh first rule of Godhood, No Physical Proof. I believe the quote goes something like this "And God disappeared in a puff of logic."
hey Cerb (I think my handle was Reaper when I played WC)if you want to continue this, e-mail me. It's kinda personal for a public forum. My e-mail to spork@U.spammers kept returning full of KFC utencils.
If you want to hear the voices of disenfranchised geeks, TALK TO THEM.
why do you think I hang on/.?
For the media at large, it helps to have a spokesman, that term may turn a thorn in your side, but that's what NBC would think of him. Besides most, if not all, of this applies only to high school geeks, the ones in extremely repressive environments. The ones accused of diabolical schemes because of their choice of dress. Us older ones have usually demonstated our value and others recognize that. If Jon wants to try and help, and I think help (or at least spreading the word) is needed, all the better for him.
this is a good point. While this one company and their product may be useful and upstanding, the same can't be said for their inevitable competitors. When you pass the task of determining risk onto a machine you get a very cold, stark picture of reality. While this may be acceptable for insurance companies, I would rather not see such a system implemented in high school, ever.
The bill's sponsors, Representatives James Rogan (R-California) and Rick Boucher (D-Virginia) say it will boost consumer confidence in legitimate e-commerce companies.
umm, what does that have to do with protecting consumers? Comsumer confidence?, WTF! If they were "a legitimate e-commerce company", they'd already own their domain. That's all this is, a way for government to protect slow-moving behemoth corporations that didn't realize that the Internet was a big deal. My guess would be that Rogan and Boucher met with a number of businessmen in their states who compained about somebody taking their god-given right to a domain name, regardless if someone else might have a use for it, after they (like the former CEO of my company) said "the Internet is a fad". There is no need for this type of legislation. We already have copyright/trademark law. Why make more laws? (oh, yeah, they are "lawmakers", harrumph)
he's trying to help. If you read the article you'd see that it was he was contacted first. This is very venomous, have you taken your weekly Violence Aptitude Test yet?
There is only one way to beat back the violence that is destroying our children. We must attack it it's very root, destroy any of the underlying factors that make violence possible. It is only through a complete eradication of violence that, uh, well, schools will be, um, safe. Everyone chant together now "Kill the Violence, kill the violence, kill the violence."
-----
"I think it's a wonderful tool that has a great deal of potential, and I hope it's properly used by the schools," said Andrew Vita, associate director of field operations for the ATF, which has used the Mosaic approach to investigate abortion-clinic bombings.
"I hope it's properly used by the schools" Yes, I'm sure most will have the extra time and funding to get counselors extensive training with a black box that spits out your violence quotient. Wow all the way from 1 to 10, I'd hate to be on the line of 7 (angry, but safe) and 8 (will blow up school if left unmodified).
Nothing like getting an institution like ALCHOHOL, TOBACCO and FIREARMS, involved with the kids. I can't wait to see how they deal with a standoff with some high schoolers...
Jon, it looks like you've become the voice of the disenfranchised geek. Congrats, represent them well, maybe a voice will be heard above the braying of Britney, LFO, and Insane Clown Posse. Luckily most of the social disruption sorts itself out by college, y'know, that part of education without metal detectors, violence aptitude tests, and orange jumpsuits (or whatever your school colors may be)
Q. One reason you advocate space travel is fear of asteroids?
A. I'm always quoting the science fiction writer Larry Niven that "the dinosaurs became extinct because they didn't have a space program."
Or electricity for heaters, or bomb shelters, or the ability to grow food without soil or direct sunlight, or the ability to clone species, or yada, yada, yada. If we have the ability to relocate a large enough population to an acceptable destination, I'm gonna guess we can stop an asteroid (yes I know how difficult it is).
Although if this were a "normal" website, I'd place big money on the implementation of "Karma" being patented, copyrighted, and placed in a small holding cell.
So you disagree that people should constantly strive to be better than they are, knowing that nobody can ever be perfect?
Not at all. I was merely stating that much of religion, especially Christianity, is built upon the belief that if you don't have it, you are lacking. I disagree. Personal improvement is fun.
That's what it would be without Grace. With Grace, it's much different.
Grace is the lady who walks by and says "Oh, you're o.k., you make it to heaven." right? Is that the same grace that the Catholic church was selling around the first turning of millenia? Maybe you could define it better.
I will weep if you don't accept Forgiveness.
Forgiveness. An interesting concept, especially how it was taught to me. Basically, Christ paid already for all my sins and all I need to ask him to forgive me for causing him such pain, right? Or is it my fellow man I should be asking forgiveness of?
It has everything to do with being polite (ohmegoodness I have no right to tell people to be polite).
I think polite is the way to go, you get more bees with honey after all. Being nice to people happens to be a tenet of my own beliefs, outside of religion. I've just found that it works better for me, ya'know Karma and all.
Oh, and "BIG BOLD LETTERS" meaning when you're cowering in the presence of the Creator, seeing all the wrong things you've done, the pain you've caused to your fellow humans and God, and have to face the consequences. Fortunately for us, there's Grace and Forgiveness.:)
Well at least I'll have all the suffering in the world to throw back in his face. I mean he created it, right? Trying not to be cynical here, but c'mon, even your nick pays homage to an earlier mythology. Guardian of the Gates of Hell, the 3-headed dog. Don't you see an alarming number of similarities with ancient "mythology" and your own beliefs?
BTW, neither of us is saying anything that hasn't been said before.
nope we aren't, but this is the first time I've said it to you, and vice-versa. I doubt a consensus can be reached between us, arguing faith is a joke 'cause it all comes down to what you believe, reality be damned.:-) Personally I'd rather live a happy honest life by my own rules rather than those of people whose true motivations I can't know, i.e. if we met, unless you asked, you'd probably think I have the same value set as yourself (outside of religion).
We will fail, guaranteed, but that is what things like Grace and Forgiveness are about.
That's a big part of what I don't like. It's rather like a repetitive TV commercial, constantly telling you that you are inferior and need something extra to be better, or just good. And by jove, the church can give it to you.
It's all about being the best you can be, but accepting that you can never be perfect and that's okay.
Except that it's not okay, that's the constant teaching, "You are fundamentally bad, you are a sinner, repent and beg for forgiveness."
For the non-Christian, who may have deeply-set antipathy towards Christianity or religion in general, can still choose to live a life of love. If they do, at the time of judgement they will be presented with the Truth in BIG BOLD LETTERS, see it for reality, and will be sheltered in Grace and Forgiveness.
You forgot they have to ACCEPT it. I've heard this story before. It's how you can account for condemning (in life) everyone who is not christian (if they don't worship the One True God (tm), they are evil), while at the same time praying for their immortal souls (after life).
Do you mean BIG BOLD LETTERS like God's finaly message to his creation from H2G2?:-)
I wrote a similar rant (to this post) the other day for my website entitled "Christ: The Ultimate Placebo", if anyone is curious e-mail me.
A Christian cowboy is riding his horse through the woods. All of a sudden a huge grizzly raises up, spooks his horse, and leaves him hurt, laying on the ground.
The bear, seeing it's prize, starts running full-speed toward the downed cowboy. The cowboy closes his eyes and quickly starts to pray, "Please God, let it be a Christian bear."
He opens his eyes in wonder to see the bear come to an abrupt stop and drop to one knee. Then the bear says "Please God, bless this food that I am about to partake".
So that's the answer, "Don't call me good. No one is good, only the Lord our God."
But, what's the question? (i.e. you've lost me)
Saying that the Lord, and only the Lord, is good kinda makes it tough for everyone else to be, eh? Or is this a question of semantics and taken out of context.
It's probably too late for this comment to get noticed or moderated up, but I'm gonna make it anyway. [sigh]
it's never too late to get noticed...
Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind, and love others as yourself."
This I have no problems with. The problem comes when people start to define God as Christ and vice-versa. Placing a man on such a high pedastal bothers me. I have a different concept of God (much close to Time, still all-powerful yet a bit more confusing) that doesn't necessarily relate to a physical embodiment, very much less a Person like you and I (although I do have a theory on how this could be too:-).
That being said, each individual Christian has a huge amount of freedom in their behaviour.
The problem most have is not the behaviour of Christians, but the fact that they condemn others for their actions, even when the others don't think said actions are wrong. There is a whole lot of condemnation(sp), blame, and guilt that are a cornerstone of many Christian Faiths. How about Original Sin? That's the dumbest bit of logic ever, especially since the parable the story teaches (Eating the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, i.e. gaining sentience) is so well done. Differentiating between metaphor and reality is also a problem many Christians have.
I realize that there are many faiths that call themselves Christian, differing broadly in their teachings, but as a whole there is some serious dogmashit rolled in.
is the next "Big Thing" IMHO
