  1. $471 million on US Army Signs $471,000,000 Deal for Microsoft Software · · Score: 1

How exactly does spending $471 million reduce costs? I'm not sure who's more delusional, the US Army or Microsoft.

  3. Saab classic 900's on Gentlemen, Hack Your Engines! · · Score: 2, Interesting

Way back in 1983, Saab introduced a system called APC (Automatic Performance Control) which controlled boost from the turbocharger. If it detected knock, it could open the wastegate until boost descended to a safe level.

The coolest thing about the APC is that it's an analog computer. Want to turn up the boost? No problem! Just grab a screwdriver and crank the potentiometers a bit. Lots of fun.

  4. Re:Why does this matter to /.-ers? on WinXP and WinAmp Vulnerable to Malicious MP3s · · Score: 1

I disagree. Although both ogg and mp3 will sound good at high bitrates, it's nice not to have to use high bitrates in order to get good quality with ogg. At low bitrates, ogg is far superior.

Of course, the license is a nice feature too!

I just downloaded WinAmp 3.0c. The about box says it is build #488, from Dec. 15 2002

How do you figure that? The article was posted on 05/11/2002, ie the 5th of November, yesterday. It also makes references to last Friday being November 1 and to a bug advisory published on October 18.

    Seems pretty recent to me!

  7. These are already fixed on Mozilla: The Good And The Bad · · Score: 5, Informative
    To quote Mozillazine
The most remarkable detail about these bugs is that most of them are already fixed. In fact, only one of the flaws (reported here in September) is present in the latest stable branch and trunk releases (Mozilla 1.0.1 and 1.1 respectively), while the more recent 1.2 Beta isn't vulnerable to any of them.
  8. It's autosave... on AbiWord 1.0.1 Released · · Score: 1

Autosave in MSWord can *really* mess things up and make parsing the file difficult. Basically all the new stuff you've added goes at the end of the document, so the import filter has to jump all over the place to correctly parse the file.

Try turning that option off and resaving those docs and give it a whirl then.

Browsing at +4 or +5 on Mozilla, this page does not crash. Must be something in a comment at +3 screwing Mozilla up, although nothing looks blatantly obvious.

Same with me. I'm using Mozilla RC1 on Win2K so it seems to be more widespread than I was first thinking. Weird.

Well, I will let others who are more knowledgeable about java on linux address that issue. (I know I turned mine off in Netscape since reading about the latest security hole)

Anyway, check out everybuddy. You can chat via AOL, ICQ, Yahoo (maybe more?) all from one program. It's much nicer IMO than AOL's crappy java app.

  13. SuSE Linux on Red Hat Growing Pains · · Score: 1

I have had some of the same problems with SuSE. I ordered 6.1 about 3 weeks ago and still have not received it. A statement on their web site simply says there are too many orders to fill and they are working as fast as they can. I tried to call them but have only received their answering service. Their web site also has dead links and outdated pages floating around.

I know that SuSE, as well as RedHat and other vendors, are committed to providing a quality product to their users. However, they are also committed to making a profit for their companies. I hope that these companies know what they're getting themselves into when they start heavily advertising their products.

I will continue to support SuSE the same way Stuart will continue to support RedHat. I hope that the business end of their operation improves however.

Have people experienced anything like this with other vendors?
