  1. Power saving? on Ideas for a Home Grown Network Attached Storage? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I would also like to build such a thing, but a box full of disks spinning 24/7 is likely to use a lot of power and give off a lot of heat. Are there any power saving solutions to this? It would be nice if there was some intelligent software that, when you try to play a movie off the disk, spin up only the disk that has the file, read a large chunk of it into memory, and spin the disk back down.

    Is this doable?

  2. Open Source a risk to corporate health? on Ask Bruce Perens About Linux and Open Source · · Score: 5, Interesting

Between the SCO lawsuit, Bill & Steve's IP remarks, and the Gartner group's recommendation, it looks like the corporate adoption Linux may have a tough road ahead. While most people here believe that Linux will come out on top of this particular issue, I feel this exposes a huge problem regarding Open Source software and its adoption in large corporations. Specifically, the end-users of Open Source software can be the targets of lawsuits if a company claims the software infringes on their intellectual property.

So my question is, as a consultant who promotes Open Source software, what is the answer to a potential business client that asks the question "Does using Open Source software make my company a possible target for a lawsuit?"

I realize this is an issue in the closed-source world as well, however, it seems that the closed-source software vendor would be liable for infringements (see recent changes regarding indemnity in Microsoft's EULA), plus the fact that it is closed-source may make it harder to discover these infringements in the first place. Would buying your Linux from RedHat put the legal burden on RedHat? What about some random Open Source project? Does downloading the RPM from redhat.com make RedHat the vendor?

Whether or not the vendor covers you is another story -- it all comes down to perception -- and right now it seems that Open Source software may be perceived as a risk to corporate health.

  4. Are all open source projects vulnerable? on SCO Extorting Unixware Licenses to Linux Users? · · Score: 1

Are all open source projects vulnerable to this kind of legal attack? What if, say, company X claims that their IP found its way into the source code to Samba (or Apache, or GIMP, or ) and then tries extorting license fees from users of Samba. Is there any way to protect the end users from such an attack? Or will this become the open source business model of the future?

  5. A linux software directory is desperately needed! on Finding Freeware Listing Sites? · · Score: 2

I think the linux community desperately needs a software listing site that focuses on listing quality desktop applications. I am new to linux-on-the-desktop, and the most frustrating thing for me so far is finding quality desktop applications. I want to burn a CD -- how do I know what application to use? What are the top 5 best applications out there? Freshmeat's laundry list approach is useless unless you like wading through hundreds of half finished and abandoned projects.

    Does anything like this exist?

Of course, once you know what you want, it is usually just an apt-get away.

The Pragmatic Programmer: From Journeyman to Master -- A excellent guide to help you go from spagetti coder to a professional programmer.

Programming Pearls (2nd Edition) -- Elegant solutions to interesting problems.

The Practice of Programming -- Coding style, algorithms, etc.

Titles that are more meaty would include Code Complete, Design Patterns, Refactoring, Applied Cryptography, Knuth, etc., but I'm sure these will be mentioned ad nauseam.

I've been waiting for this device to be available for quite some and I was excited to see the "first full review available on the net". This review seems to be cut short because the reviewer had a hard time with the navigation. Very professional.

Does anyone have any real world experience with this device? I like the design, and Motorola also makes an SDK available for their WisdomOS so you can develop your own apps.

  15. Overpriced? Restrictive? Let's build our own! on SonicBlue's Digital Audio Center · · Score: 3, Interesting

A lot of people complain about these convergence devices -- how they are too expensive or too restrictive, and say to just build your own. But I really haven't found too many people who have! So lets price one out. My personal requirements would be:

    - A case that doesn't look out of place in the living room, but provides enough expansion for adding DVR capabilities
    - A soundcard with digital out for people with decent home theater equipment and capable of 24bit/96khz

For a case, I've narrowed it down to the InWin IW-FT620 (http://www.in-win.com/framecode/ino_ft620.html) ($55) or the Yeong Yang YY-9301 (http://www.yeongyang.com/products/yy9301.htm) ($?? can't find it for sale anywhere). Although I'm not too sure if these cases require low profile PCI cards....

As for a soundcard, the M-Audio Audiophile (http://www.midiman.com/products/m-audio/audiophil e.php) fits the bill ($150).

I would also choose not to have a hard drive and boot off the network.

I think this could be put together for under $500. Extra slots could be used for a tv-out card to play DivX, or some kind of DVD hardware, or even a gigabit NIC.

    Any thoughts?

I have been having success using XSL to style a report generated in XML to create an XML document that Microsoft Excel can load and print. You can do any formatting that can be done from the Excel UI, plus you can control how the report will be printed (landscape, breaks, etc...). Design the report the way you want it to look in Excel, then save as HTML and use that saved document as a template for your report.
