  1. Re:Molecules and Computing on Towards Molecular Computing · · Score: 2

No, not unless they use organic molecules to create actual replicating cells. Virus' require a complete and functioning cell with replicating DNA in order to do their deed. On another note, however, if there were replicating-cell computers, you would then have to worry about your monitor giving your computer cancer.

The kind of time commitment required to collect thousands of pirated MP3's and hundreds upon hundreds of pirated software programs (most of which will never get installed... but the kids have to have the newest version of LightWave... JUST IN CASE) prevents warez collectors from actually leaving the house and getting a life, or getting a date here and there. The pr0n replaces the warez d00d'z need to go out and meet chicks.

Before the warez d00dz get on my case, let me say that this is my theory, and I could be wrong.

  3. Sugar Water and Fake Student ID on Coca Cola Supply and Demand · · Score: 1

This is especially poignant because it costs approximately fucking NOTHING to manufacture soda. Putting it in cans is more expensive than making it. Like popsicles, you get, like, 6 billion percent profit.

You can break even on the movie soda prices is you make yourself a fake student ID for the admission discount. Instead of $1,000.50 to get in it'll be $5. Fake student ID's are easier to make than fake driver's licenses... and who is going to suspect that you made a fake ID to make yourself a few years YOUNGER?! Pick some random obscure out-of-state private school with a student population of about 700 and your golden. Who cares what the real ID actually looks like. Just laminate the fucker and now your tickets are $5. Hurray!!!

  4. What OS, maybe no traditional OS? on Major PC Makers to Ship PCs Sans Windows · · Score: 3

Most average people aren't really going to be interested in installing a different OS. In fact, most people fear installing an OS period, even Windows. They want it already there, already set up so they can start frantically double-clicking all the icons.

Alternatively, though, perhaps an OS in the traditional way we think of an OS is not what they're looking at. The article describes a PC that would mainly just be able to surf the web. The article mentions the fact that AOL invested $800M in Gateway, but does not mention the Netscape-AOL-Sun deal. Likewise, an article on /. early in the summer describes a plot by AOL-Sun-Netscape to render Windows obsolete. There is also talk of "AOL Everywhere", as if the AOL interface (God forbid) would become the operating system. Ellison and McNeely's vision of ditching all your locally installed software for web apps is likely what they are talking about.

According to Katz's article Dying babies and the Myth of American Freedom, harshly criticising something that is radically different than the mainstream is essentially attempting to limit the freedom of the creators of the different idea. This game is definitely something that goes against what is expected of the gaming industry, and Katz is clearly criticizing it. Is he now limiting their freedom?

Katz, your creditbility with this audience would not be as damaged if you would at least not contradict yourself.

They make it seem like they're being bullied around when in reality, MS has more capital to invest in a legal staff than the DoJ does. Additionally, MS is on trial for being a bully in the first place and now it's the pot calling the kettle black. They can dish it out but they can't take it.
