The amount of lost productivity from my playing Doom currently ranges in the tens of thousands of dollars. Then Id had to release the three Quakes. Maxis, oooo you're guilty too! I'm talking real financial hardship here people! All those hours playing video games when I could have been earning money! This suit will be in the millions before I'm done!
On a more serious note, ever wonder just how many generations will have to repeat this idiotic cycle before people will finally clue in? Today it's Columbine. In the 80's it was heavy metal. In the 50's it was the evil comic books. I'm not exactly a history major, but it seems to me that every generation spouts the same nonsense:
Kids today are messed up, and it's all the fault of ***insert media item parents never had when they were children*** !!!
In fact, didn't someone use this exact same line about 2000+ years ago?

You're proably thinking of Hypercolor shirts. Or one of the 300 knock offs. And no, I can't find a decent link with any further info, as Google once again returns nothing but messageboards posts:(
While I entirely agree with the sentiment, and would mod this to +5 if I hadn't wasted it all on goatsex links, what precisely does this have to do with Russian space launches?
I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Look on a map for North Dakota, and keep going up. In the winter it averages -40 degrees at night (C or F). All I do is bundle myself up, and open the window - I've played Quake3 on my old XT a few times. Hard to hit all the buttons with those thick gloves on though...
Oh, and just to ensure a (0: Offtopic) mod, if you've never done it before, I highly recommend spending a day browsing/. at -1. My personal desire is to see 2 threads - everything at 4 and 5 for when I'm thinking, and all the 0 and under for when I want a good chuckle during a long and boring work day.
(AP) - Nintendo of America announced today that due to incredibly low sales of their 1986 hit 'Zelda', they are over 65 billion Yen in debt, and are declaring Chapter 11 Bankruptcy.
'All these ROM downloads have taken away literally thousands of sales per day', said an anonymous Nintendo spokesman. When asked how Nintendo could possibly lose sales on an item that hasn't been in production for nearly a decade, the spokesman refused comment.
The base belief in individual ownership of property means that in order to continue to live, each of us must obtain money to purchase the basic things that enable that. That is, I have to get food, and in order to get food away from those who "own" it, I have to give them money. So life, in a capitalist society, is subordinate to property.
Strange, it almost sounds like he's saying that in order to live, people need food. Works that way in the animal kingdom too, kid. Life is ALWAYS subordinate to 'property' as you define it.
Because of our assent to this form of reality, those who hold the most property may dictate the views of the largest number of people, which in turn recreates and reinforces the reality which enables those property-holders to continue to hold property.
You know, the most ironic part of this whole piece is how closely it resembles an ANTI-communist opinion. Read 1984 (yes, I know, it's not strictly about communism) and think about the chocolate rations. Better yet, read 1984 again and ignore this directionless fluff.
Already we're starting to see these 20+ year old ROMs begin to degrade. Thankfully a sizable majority of old games have been backed up, and the work continues.
Now, as a non-electronic analogy, imagine if the Mona Lisa was designed so that it could only be viewed in one gallery. Copies of it, in any form, are impossible. Now imagine said gallery has a fire. A priceless work of art is gone for all eternity, save people's memories.
Remind anyone of cps2? Thankfully that's been cracked, as who knows whether Capcom would have ever released the data to the public (as they did with some cps1 games). And the cps2 boards didn't have a life span of a few decades, more like 5 YEARS. See cps2 suicide for the details. Now apply this sort of copyright madness to all modern forms of art, and ask where we'll be culturally in 50 years. Scary.
Agree Agree Agree! Sometimes I wonder if anyone on/. even plays games, or those that do, if they've been playing for longer than 2 years.
I'm remembering Kool-Aid man and Chase the Chuckwagon for Atari. I'm remembering every single licensed movie/tv show/toy line video game.
None of this is new, in fact I'd say Crazy Taxi is a hell of a lot less intrusive than that insipid Fido Dido game. Or Pokemon for that matter, which is basically just a videogame commercial for all the related merchandise. Hell, Humpty's (Canadian restaurant chain, think Denny's) of all places sells a video game based on their mascots.
I keep seeing this point repeated over and over. And then I think of all the parents with their "You can't monitor your children 24 hours a day" claptrap. Guess what folks? NO parent has ever been able to monitor their children 24 hours a day. And yet, millions of kids don't spend their day watching violence/sex/whatever on TV. I certainly never did, parents around or no. Then again, I had a pretty good idea what was 'appropriate' for children (at least in my family), and just didn't watch anything else. Why? Because my parents raised me to not just absorb the outside world, but to process it as well.
Those of us that can think for ourselves, and are well over 18 and therefore not going to be influenced by this chip directly, still have problems with it. Look at it this way: do we honestly want an entire generation of children raised who have all their entertainment/information censored the same way? I remember Catcher in the Rye (considered to be a true literary classic nowadays) being banned when I was in school, and the line back then was "It doesn't affect you, we're saving the children, butt out". Sorry, but parent or no, I have an obligation to society to make sure we don't tread the same path that historically we've walked so many times before.
Book bannings, TV censorship, Internet filtering, 'adults' sections in the library, 'appropriate for women' topics of conversation, segregated schools.... Sorry, but 1790 or 2001, I don't see much difference between any of this. And this isn't just some 'information wants to be free' rant. However, when we choose to restrict it, suddenly we're all relying on a select group of people's opinions to dictate our own?
Not to indulge in hyperbole, but 1984 was based in the UK, and was not really an anti-communism rant like so many people take it to be. Orwell's entire point is that this could happen to us, and we're as likely as not to invite it in ourselves.
The Japanese have a long cultural tradition of self-abasement and giving up their identity to the collective whole. Americans invented the term 'ME Generation'. Nuff sed.
(unless of course, that WAS your point, and I'm now sitting here looking silly)
Style magazine The Face put Lara on the cover and in doing so did more to get rid of gaming's nerdy image than anyone else did.
Yes, and thousands of fan sites that came shortly after, with page after page after page wondering about her cup size, brought the nerdy image back 100-fold.
My first computer science course was in high school in 1984. Basically, the first half of the textbook was almost exactly what this person is asking. Try picking up some of the older comp sci texts; let's face it, back then, there wasn't much else you COULD teach at an introductory level. All our computer lab had at the time was a dozen PETs, and you can't spend an entire year on BASIC programming and still satisfy government education standards!:)
I think its a good thing. Here in Indianapolis, its already against the law for children under 18 to play most arcade gaming machines during school hours. Why? Because if they are under 18 they should be in school.
I graduated High School at 16; should the government have forced me to go to University just because of some arbitrary societal age determination?
Then again, in a country where it is illegal to have a beer, but legal to be forced to kill for your country for 3 years, I suppose I shouldn't expect much logic.
The predominant thinking here seems to be that this kid was going to be abducted by some old creep or something. Strange... when I think of that message, my first thought was 'he probably snuck out to see his girlfriend'.
I think the issue here has nothing to do with AOL, rather why this kid doesn't tell his mother where he's going when he leaves. But of course I forget, everyone who's not on/. is a pervert who abducts kids.
A LOT of kids (especially teens) chat with their friends online. No need to make a capital case out of it. You better believe the phone company wouldn't release the personal info if this kid had used the phone instead of a chat room. Or are slashdotters secretly technophobes too?
Nintendo estimates that it holds a 90 percent share of the portable game market, though some analysts believe that percentage to be even higher. It is the first to have a horizontal alignment
The previous comment was specifically referencing the handheld market, for one thing. For another, I feel fully justified in getting a little bit annoyed from all these people who have no concept of gaming history, and yet pretend to be experts.
Similarly, if we don't understand why the Earth is warming up and the only thing that really has changed is the pollution we spew up into the upper atmosphere in large quantities, shouldn't we stop doing that as well?
The stock market is going down (and fast!). Eric Lindros hasn't played since it started going down. We should FORCE Lindros to play hockey, as he is obviously the cause of our market woes.
Oil prices are going up. Dot-com investment is going down. In order to return oil prices to a more affordable level, we should all immediately invest lots of money into Dot-coms.
Crime is going up. So is internet usage. In order to combat crime, we should immediately discontinue the internet.
All of my conclusions are just as rational as yours. Cause and effect does not just happen because we would like it to. Two events can have exactly ZERO correlation, and still happen simultaneously.
Yes, pollution sucks, but unless someone is ready to ban automobiles and a good chunk of our manufacturing industry, or we are all ready to accept a much lower standard of living, or we kill off 95% of the population... not much is going to change just because 'the Earth is a bit warmer'.
That is the whole point! Any scientist worth his salt knows damn well that, given long enough, 99.999% of any modern theory will be 'disproved'.
That is one of the fundamental properties of science itself: the ability and willingness to change. This happens in real life too, you know: think about what you knew at 4 years old. Then what you knew at 13. Then at 25. Then at 40.
Knowledge is continually updated, and supposed 'facts' are often just an interpretation of reality based on rather miniscule amounts of data.
Of course, contrast this with the usual nemesis of science: Religion. In religion, you are TOLD what the facts are, and they NEVER change, no matter what new information is learned. Crazy scientists should just do that, according to people like yourself.
Firstly, those system specs for a 1st generation emulator are abysmally low. Assuming some genius whipped together a PS2 emulator that actually worked, you'd need more on the range of 2Ghz and about a gig of RAM. No new game console emulator has ever ran worth a damn without needing some pretty top end hardware to run on (UltraHLE, anyone?).
Secondly, (and more obviously), check out the URL: ekafemulator.com. The first 4 letters are just 'fake' spelled backwards. Funny joke, actually:)
I've noticed many comments from people comparing these skydivers to the Shuttle, and it's been pointed out that the Shuttle experiences most of its friction due to its horizontal speed in relation to the Earth.
As the heat tiles on the Shuttle have been one of its major problems (at least at first), has it ever been looked at by NASA to somehow stop the horizontal motion, and let a space vehicle just glide in like these skydivers? There would be a hell of a lot less ablation to deal with. Or is this just incredibly inefficient fuel wise?

I happen to agree 150% with this comment, as I've seen these situations far too many times.
