When I was a kid the rumor'd "Jabba" footage got shown on TV years after the movie came out, and we all thought it was cool to see how Lucas had been planning this way back when. It was the only good thing to happen to the "new" trilogy, and it'd be nice if it wasn't so awkward when Han walks behind him.

I guess whatever features BT adds don't ring my bell. I've played with 802.11 on iPaqs, but have yet to see a PDA with BT on it, which is about the only use I can think for this stuff. Sorry, wireless mice and keyboards are a hassle to use IMHO - batteries, the extra cost, etc - and it's not like a wired keyboard that never moves makes one bit of difference to me.

And I think we've been hearing about BT longer than 802.11, but my memory could be fuzzy on this one.

You're right. In a perfect world a personal firewall doesn't do a whole lot. But that's a lot of assumptions for my taste, and I'd just as soon sacrifice the whopping 10MB of ram (what's that, 2% of a modern system?) and be safe rather than chance it.

If I was able to safely close these vulnerabilities on my own (like I can on a Linux box - just shut off the service), I wouldn't even consider a firewall. Firewalls don't do much when you can't connect to the machine in question :) But forced to leave listening ports open, I'd just as soon not take my chances.

It's not Windows bashing, I'm a happy Windows user for the most part. It's just the reality when putting a box on the internet these days.

Speaking of which, how likely do you think it is for your average Windows machine to be probed (and compromised) in the time it takes from first boot to patching everything in Windows Update? I've personally seen boxes get hit within 30 seconds of going online.

No, humans do not have free speech. In some countries, we do have freedom of expression though.

I liken advertising to "offensive" or threatening language.

You can't walk up to a 5 year old and start swearing at the top of your lungs, or tell every woman you meet that you'll be raping her later tonight. Why? Because society has deemed this sort of speech too much for good taste. Hence obscenity and harassment laws. Say those things all you like in the privacy of your own home, but not to my face, thank you very much.

The ONLY reason advertising is allowed is because we, as a society, permit it. It has nothing to do with some absolute concept of "free speech" that doesn't exist in any country I've ever heard of.

No, really. Most older fans hated PM. Walking out of the theatre after the first (midnight) showing, you heard nothing but silence, as opposed to the excited chatter you usually hear after a movie people enjoy.

For weeks after, everyone and their dog went to see it, because after all, it was the NEW STAR WARS MOVIE. Most people I know went to see it regardless of what their friends said, because "it can't possibly be that bad, it's STAR WARS!".

Reviews by critics rarely echo public opinion (Gigli notwithstanding), and box office receipts mean diddly. Bring up numbers all you want, but trust me: PM was panned by most people over 20 for months after it came out. One reason people spoke so highly about AOTC at first was that it was "better than PM" - even though it was pretty dreadful upon reflection as well.

Oh, and as far as I can remember, Waterworld turned a profit for Costner. Again, opinion and box office receipts don't always coincide.

My question is, can you do this with your mp3s, and still have your iPod play them?

Quite honestly, as much as everyone raves about the features in iTunes, I don't really see the need for it - it would be cool to just be able to treat it like a portable drive that plays music without installing software in order to use it. My digital camera works this way, and it's handy to share photos with people when I don't feel like carrying HP's installation CD around.
