Star Wars Original Trilogy Gets DVD Release Date
Angry Black Man writes "The Digital Bits is reporting that there is finally some official information from Lucasfilm regarding the release of the Star Wars OT (episodes IV, V, and VI) on DVD. The movies are coming to DVD in September of 2004. The animated series of Clone Wars shorts appearing soon on the Cartoon Network will also be released on DVD, possibly before the end of this year. The teaser campaign for Episode III will begin in January of 2005, leading up to the May theatrical release. Finally... Episode III will hit DVD in November of 2005."

the original trilogy i'll buy. that's all.
I've been waiting for both this and Indy for a long time. I suppose good news comes in in waves. Or maybe it's just an apology for Episodes I and II.
About time. Too bad they'll likely never release the original theatrical release cut on DVD.
I hope Lucas has come to his senses and will offer the original, non-CGI version of Star Wars!
Will these be the remastered versions of the original trilogy that were released in the 90s, or will these be the "true" originals?
The "official information" is from an anonymous source on Aint It Cool News.
Tell me that Han shoots first in the new DVD.

So what do i do with my copies downloaded from Kazaa ?
Is this going to be the special edition versions or the original?
Having seen the original release in the theaters as a kid, I would love to have a copy of them on DVD, my VHS ones are starting to give up.
Heck, I wouldn't mind a six disc set with both. I think there's still a lot of people out there who like them in their original form.
Any word on wether its the ORIGINAL trilogy, or the one with the dinosaurs all over the place?
Because, as far as I'm concerned, Han shot first, and I'm not paying to be told otherwise.
You can't take the sky from me...
Time to start checking Amazon for pre-orders!
And I predict the laserdisk version will shoot up in price. Why? Because you just know that Lucas is going to make "changes". Purists will just cry.
That was all I saw, and it got me moist as a snack cake down there.
Harry, you fat bastard, that's not the sort of image I want to be given in the morning. Excuse me while I go throw up.
I just felt as great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of Star Wars fans cried out in protest, and then suddenly stopped whining about "when is the Star Wars OT DVD coming out?"
Ahhh.
Now if only Lucas would truly take advantage of the DVD format and include both the original and "Special Editions" on the discs. But I'm not idealistic enough to actually hope for that.
George Lucas doesn't try to re-edit them. Hans Solo would look stupid waving a walkie talkie around.

The thing that gets my goat is that the original, theatrical, un-fiddled with Star Wars that we all fell in love with the first time will never, ever be on DVD. It's not fair.
And if Lucas throws an even better super-special edition on DVD and never, ever sells the special edition ever again...well...it would be expected.
Ah well, November 2005- who else is going to sit in of doors for many, many hours going through all 6 Star Wars movies? Anyone? Anyone?
I do hope that you're planning on including both the "old" and the "new" versions of the original trilogy.
Why, you ask? For one simple reason, and I'm going to type this very, very slowly to make sure you don't mess this up:
Han shoots Guido first.
Ah! No, I don't want to hear how Han isn't a bad man. Shut it, George - you made some good movies, but I don't want to hear it.
"Yes, I bet you have." BLAM! That's it - one shot. Deal with it.
And if you plan on including any new scenes, I will pound you. I don't want to see this:
Jar-Jar: No, it'sa not true! Messa is you father!
Chewbacca: Aaaarrrghhhghg!

I would have thought they would have released it this year before the holiday season since they are going to start the Clone War cartoons soon. I would have released them on DVD to get the younger market that hasn't seen and doesn't own the movie yet. (DVD > VHS)
From a bit further down the page:
Also, Lucasfilm has said in the past that there aren't a lot of behind-the-scenes materials available for the original films, so having a single bonus disc of extras (as opposed to three) would make life easier for them.
I thought I remembered quite a bit of info on various "making-of" shows that showed the original models, how they did cutting-edge special effects on a shoestring budget, and the occasional flaws that made it through (like a TIE fighter shadow where the fighter itself had been removed).
Of course, nowadays I guess we expect someone to be filming the entire filmaking process for the express purpose of creating the ultimate making-of special. When even a film like Monsters, Inc., where every frame requires painstaking design and hours of rendering time, has "outtakes", "deleted scenes", and "goofs". Soon, we'll have cameramen following the cameramen, so we can see "The Making Of 'The Making Of "Star Wars VII: Attack Of The Menacing Phantom Jedi Clone Empire"'"
You know... maybe, just maybe, Lucas & co. should spend more time telling a coherent story with believable characters, and less time worrying about how he'll look in the outtakes?
Stressed? Me? Of course not. Stress is what a rubber band feels before it breaks, silly.

Man, I sure wish he woulda' left starwars alone after the "last 3" were completed.. These new ones have made a discrace out of the jedi.
I hope they are also releasing the true originals, not just the remade originals from several years back. I was not entirely impressed by those. There were some definite improvements, but some things weren't. They were far too busy, with all sorts of things moving around and buzzing that weren't there before. And frankly, they didn't need to be. I think Lucas was acting like a kid in a candy store, "Hey let's do this and this and this, because we can!"
I really want to have the originals on DVD so I can remember Star Wars how it originally was.
At one stage, I was all for buying the original Star Wars trilogy on DVD, when it was eventually released. Unfortunately now, due to the near complete cock-ups that have been Episodes I and II, my attitude to Star Wars has cooled tremendously. I just can't view Star Wars with the same excitement that I originally did.
The irony of the whole situation is that, had Lucas released the original trilogy on DVD a few years ago, they would certainly have been part of my collection. Thanks Mr. Lucas. You've killed Star Wars for me.
If you read the actual report, they only say that "the original trilogy is due for release"... they don't specify whether it's a theatrical or DVD release. Knowing Lucas, I wouldn't put it past them to try to milk the original trilogy in the theaters one more time to cap off the prequel trilogy.

DVD has the technology to allow you to watch the original cut of the film or the special edition yet Lucas will just say that the original cut wasn't his original vision for the film. Yeah right, the first film was nearly chopped around and turned into a TV series. The original Star Wars release doesn't have the Episode IV: A New Hope at the start either, that was slipped in later. The original versions need to be seen in the context of when they were made.
I suppose someone with the original versions on VHS could restore the "Special" editions somewhat. I'd put up with momentary quality losses.
Release ALL SIX as one big giant 20 disc set with extra features and the original triliogy and the special editions!
Actually, he won't even shoot at all. Greedo will instead be killed by his own shot reflecting back at him. Every time Han gets in a fire fight, or is otherwise in danger, he will escape only through dumb luck and ingenuity cleverly disguised as incompetence. It will also be revealed that he is related to Jar Jar Binks from the later triology, a scene which was unfortunately left on the cutting room floor, but was always intended to be a major part of the story. Han Solo has always been related to Jar Jar Binks; Lucas definetly did not make that up later.
This is how he was meant to be portrayed all those years ago, but the technology just wasn't there. Han was never a greedy, violent outlaw. That simply wasn't the case. The audience just mis-interpreted the character. In fact, Han's original signature costume was a pink jumpsuit with bunny ears and gumdrops affixed across the chest to create a rainbow smile, a technology that didn't exist in the 70's. Now, with CG fairies buzzing around him, singing a merry tune throughout the entire film, George Lucas will finally be able to realize his perfect vision of the Han Solo character.
It's nothing but crumpled porno and Ayn Rand.

Mod parent up!
There are bootleg DVDs around, encoded from the widescreen LaserDisc versions of the original trilogy. They're actually quite good, all things considered, and cheap. I got all three for about the price of a light lunch about two years ago.
Check eBay, look around the 'net. Maybe if "unofficial" sales of the original version outnumber sales of the special edition DVDs, Lucas will develop sense and release the proper, original films.

the old or the computer Jabba version?
I personally think the computer Jabba version sucked seriously. Computer Jabba didn't look like puppet Jabba and even Harrison couldn't fix that.
I would be dissapointed about the computer Jabba version.
You would have been OT!
This poses an interesting question... Do you think they will release the super-DVD collection with all 6 movies + extras after Ep. III is released? Will everyone go out and buy the OT and then go out and buy some sort of collector's edition when and if it's available? How many copies of Star Wars can you have: Official DVD, bootleg DVD, collector's edition DVD, VHS, LaserDisc? I'm tired of buying the same movie over and over again out of fear that I will be missing a window of oportunity to ever own it at all.

But when are they going to release the Star Wars Holidy Special on DVD??
but is it going to be the one where Han shoots first, and we see Jabba the Hutt, or is it going to be the actual original?
i don't know that i want the stupid redited 20 years later versions. it's probably stupid but i want to watch the movies the way i remember them, not the way they were remade.
Sure, they are in a different format. Sure, they might be cleaner and with better sound. But many of us have already purchased these only to have to purchase them again at full retail. And then we will have to purchase them again when they are released on HD-DVD. And then we will need to purchase them again when the collectors edition HD-DVD set comes out. And don't forget about the HD-DVD directors edition Episodes 1-6 boxed set. While I am a Star Wars fan, I find it hard to get excited about this when so much money is being made selling the same material over and over.
I got the set from dvdmoviebox.com, Fed-Exed from Malaysia for about $30. Unfortunately, the quality isn't so hot, definitely not your standard DVD quality. There does appear to be surround sound, however, the image is interlaced, and the transfer and encoding are less than professional grade. They arrived in a flat document mailer, with the DVD sleeves and discs in a flat plastic sleeve, so you'll have to get your own DVD case. The image format is 4x3 letterboxed. The region is 0 (region free), and there is no CSS encryption (a sign of quality). In short, you get what you pay for, but I'll probably have to get the official set when that's released, just for the full DVD resolution and progressive image quality.

... and Episode III will not be one tenth as cool as The Matrix Revolutions. Sorry, George. You blew it the second time around. If only you could have realized that while you are a visionary and perhaps even a decent writer, you are a lousy director.

Yeah, this release has three parts of a SIX part series. Does anybody know what a 6-part series is called?
The source of this is Aint-It-Cool-News, which has been a major source of false rumors since the prequels began to come out.
Aint-It-Cool-News is the source of such things as the Grando Calrissian rumors... entertaining, and surely a contribution to Star Wars fandom, but hardly a source of definitive reporting.
I would suggest that the editors do not place such things on the front page until they are confirmed from such places at the Official Site.

I hate the stupid edited ones :(
I could go on about how the special edition had so many little changes that it's impossible to squeeze both versions onto a disc with seamless branching, but honestly I don't think that there were that many extensive changes, and some of them might not be very noticable (like cleaning up some of the special effects -- it's not a drastic change, so why have two shots?), so that's not what I think the issue is.
Lucas is so arrogant and egotistical that he will never admit that there are Star Wars fans who prefer the movies as they were presented originally. As such, he sees no need to ever release the original trilogy in their original format, ever. There's no demand in his mind, because his ego won't let him see that a lot of the people don't like the changes.
STOP MISUSING APOSTROPHES, YOU MORONS!!!
There was a guy at my junior high school 78' who's father had a bootleg video of Star Wars. A really good quality one. We watched it everyday for months.
My karma is getting better everyday.
Let's overlook the racism and the poor acting, for a moment. (True fans are busy awaiting Episode2 and aren't still making excuses for TPM.) On a much deeper level, StarWars sends a shocking, frightening, and sickening message to America's youth. StarWars portrays space as a site of warfare between different species and even between rival human factions. When A New Hope was released to theaters thirteen years ago, America was at peace. The Vietnam War had recently been brought to a close, and Americans were looking forward to a new era of prosperity and at friendly relations with their neighbors. But within a few short years, America invaded Grenada, Nicaragua, Panama, Iraq, and Haiti. What had happened? What had become of our message of peace? What could have transpired in the interim to bring about this cruel turn of events? I'll tell you what: StarWars was released to thronging masses of American youths. In their orgiastic rush to imbibe their new-found cultural icons, they discarded all the wisdom we had acquired through the blood and sweat of our recent military conquests. It's no surprise, of course. Even the name "StarWars" itself conveys a message of conflict and carnage. A New Hope is, at bottom, a story about armed rebellion by rabble against a benevolent legal order, precisely the sort of communistic message we had come so close to defeating in Vietnam. Perhaps it would've been different if we had won the Vietnam War. Perhaps then we would've witnessed the fall and destruction of communism and all its bastard progeny (socialism, yuppyism, the Home Shopping Network, etc.). Unfortunately, the world will never know. George Lucas, I think I can speak for everyone here on slashdot, and indeed with the entire breath of humanity: you should be ashamed of yourself for what you have wrought. Disgraceful.
Why not in May 05 and just have half of the USA's GNP that month come from Star Wars related sales..
Look. There are a LOT of people registered on slashdot. On this particular issue, a few of them line up at one polar extreme, and a few at the other. I realize that waaaay back when you first registered at slashdot, there weren't too many people. It may SEEM to somebody who registered when there were less than 3000 users that everyone posts on every article these days.
Did it ever occur to you that MAYBE the people posting "yay, woohoo! starwars on DVD! here's my credit card, mr. evil corporation!" are not the same people posting "DOWN WITH TEH MAN, I WILL NEVAR BUY A DVD FAGOT LOLOLOL!!!!!!!!"?
And that the other 500,000 users who *aren't* in either one of the polar extremes, retarded, or trolling might just not be posting?
Slashdot is a big enough place to house both a "digital rights action front" AND a "DVD fanclub". You'll all just have to share.
The Grinch Who Stole Linux. Well done.
Sounds like a lot of people have no interest in owning the Special Edition, Ultra Edition, or Mega Edition versions of these films (myself included). We want the pure, original Han shoots first, Jabba doesn't slither around, Ewoks sing their dumbass victory song versions. We have no chance of every getting these on DVD if the bullsh!t special editions sell in record numbers.
So, time for the advice....
Be patient and vote with your wallet, I know it will be difficult, but we have waited this long already. Send the sales figures for these bastard DVDs to sub-Willow levels. We must send the message that nothing other than the original theatrical versions are acceptable. We have forked over simply too much money for substandard product (see TPM and AOTC). If you give your puppy a milk bone and a pat on the head every time it pisses on your couch, you are gonna to train your puppy to piss on the couch.

And then, it will be over. Done. Fini.

the digital crap they added in many years later.
I saw the revised editions and I was not at all impressed or pleased with them.
Leave things alone. I want the original, unedited, as released to the theatre in 1977.
I do *NOT* like digital effects. They look crappy and they detract from the original work and concept.
LEAVE IT ALONE!
If it's without the added scenes, I'll buy it.
If the digital scenes are added in, I will *NOT* buy it..
Got them in Vietnam for nothing. Probably fed a few people though as I'm sure I paid more than the natives would, and that's OK with me. Of course I will have to buy the "American" ones next year if only to hear Lucas interviews on how Episodes 1,2,3 were botched. Ahh, at least Return of the King is almost upon us.

Episode IV: A New Hope
01. The Imperial March has been added to Darth Vader's first appearance on Princess Leia's ship.
02. When Obi-Wan is talking to Luke about his father Anakin's Theme plays in the background and then it turns into the Imperial March as he talks about Vader.
03. The lightsaber effects have been redone and the frame jumps of lightsabers being turned on has been removed.
04. There's a new scene which has been shot during the filming of Episode III in which the Emperor dissolves the Senate.
05. In the Cantina, the Duros(green aliens guys) have been replaced with Neimoidians and some aliens from the prequels have been added.
06. The bleeding arm on the floor in the Cantina has been replaced with a non-bleeding arm because it's now canon that lightsabers cauterize wounds.
07. The original shooting scene between Han and Greedo has been restored.
08. Jabba the Hutt has been given a makeover and Han no longer steps on his tale.
09. In place of R2 wobbling down the stairs to the Falcon's hangar, a CG R2 navigating the stairs like he does in Attack of the Clones was added.
10. The white boxes around space ships have been removed and new CG shots have been added.
11. The scene of the Falcon being chased by the two Star Destroyers was modified. The Falcon now does spinning moves, avoiding the Star Destroyers' fire.
12. When the Death Star destroys Alderaan there's a new scene of Yoda's reaction to the disturbance in the Force that is created by all those deaths and then it cuts to Obi-Wan reacting to it as well.
13. The Dianoga has gotten a CG makeover and were are now able to see more of the creature.
14. The Death Star's paneling and computers have been slightly altered to show similar displays to those in the prequels.
15. The words "Tractor Beam" with Aurebesh lettering.
16. More stormtroopers have been added to the Death Star.
17. Temuera Morrison's voice is being recorded for use with all the stormtroopers.
18. The Obi-Wan/Vader duel has been spruced up. It is much more epic and there is much more movement. A modified version of Duel of the Fates is being considered for the scene.
19. The Death Star plans that are taken from R2 have been updated. When the Rebels are reviewing the Death Star plans they look similar to the plans we see in Attack of the Clones.
20. The Death Star battle is much more epic with more Tie Fighters and more Rebels being blown to bits. We get to see old Naboo starfighters being used by the Rebels.
21. There's a new scene(shot during Episode III) where Darth Vader goes to Coruscant and lands his ship in the same building Count Dooku does at the end of Attack of the Clones. Except now the building is all fixed up and it is now Palpatine's palace. He meets with Palpatine to ask for forgiveness for his failure and inform him of a new potential who is strong in the Force.
22. Chewbacca now gets a medal.
Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
01. The taun-tauns are now CG.
02. The battle of Hoth is much more epic. We see the Imperial ships land on Hoth and release AT-ATs. The AT-ATs have been sped up a bit. There's a ground battle between the Rebel soldiers and stormtroopers featuring new ships and vehicles.
03. Temuera Morrison's voice is being recorded for the older Boba Fett and all the stormtroopers.
04. The white boxes around space ships have been removed.
05. The slug monster is CG.
06. Ian McDiarmid has refilmed scenes as the Emperor. The conversations between Vader and Palpatine is now longer and features a few connections to the prequels.
07. Yoda's face is

This is important information that all of us need, and I for one wish to thank you for providing it in a timely manner.
And don't for a minute think I'm joking.
There is precious little info for that box set. It says DVD and THX, but zero about where it was mastered from. You say LD, but I can't find out any info and the site it very sparse. For all I know its just the VHS tape with the audio redubbed. I'd be mightly pissed if that was the case if I bought it.
Got any link to reviews of that set from people who actually bought it and how the quality is etc?
Thanks.

The company should be smart enough now to know what lucas does to an otherwise good movie concept.
I can see that you're right... I just don't want to.

I so very want the Restored-but-non-cgi-messed with versions... so very, very badly... I horridly have them on VHS (well, my wife does), and we have the Special editions on the official VCDs (Hey... they're an oddity at least.
But how I want to be able to watch Star Wars with NO CGI JABBA, no CGI walking slugs with pencil leg things, NONE of that crud... just give me the original version nicely cleaned up so it looks like it did when it was released... you did that... you cleaned them up, you polished the soundtracks... now leave them be...
leave them be.
A while back I remember reading an article that stated that the Star Wars DVDs will only feature edited versions of the originals, which include extra dialogue and special effects. Most troubling was the inclusion of scenes specifically tailored to make the originals fit better with the new (old) movies. Specifically, I believe some scenes were said to include Amidala.
I do not know if this is still true (or if it was even more than a rumor then, though I do believe George Lucas himself lent credence to it, stating that these edited versions of the original trilogy would be the only versions released on DVD), but if it is, it might be enough to spoil the movies altogether, for me. And even if these new edits are not included, what about the old edits that were included in the re-release of the original trilogy? I wasn't necessarily a fan of those; to have those included as extras ("redone" scenes), would be appropriate, in my mind.
PErsonally, I strongly feel that when it comes to the Star Wars prequels, the phrase 'outtakes' should have been applied, and appropriate measures carried out, to everything coming between the titel and the end credits.

I just don't buy media anymore. The artist organizations disgust me and individual money-grubbing artists sicken me. There's a difference between making a handsome profit off an exquisite piece of art, and sucking the life out of it by pimping it for every dollar possible.
Nothing new here. Move along. Besides, I already have them on disc.
Original cut, boxed set, THX. Quite beautiful. Actually I've had them for almost the last 10 years.

George Solo: Coherent story and believable character are no match for a good Bonus DVD at your side, kid.
New Fan: How did the original trilogy die?
Oldi-Fan: An old director, who was a pupil of mine until he turned to evil, helped the Empire edit and destroy the original trilogy. He betrayed and murdered your trilogy.
Darth Lucas: The ability to write SW-OT is insignificant next to the suckiness of the New Trilogy
Fan: What a piece of junk!
George Solo: She'll make point five past a gazillion dollars. She may not look like much but she's got it where it counts, kid. I've made a lot of special CG modifications myself.
SWFAN-3PO: We seem to be made to suffer. It's our lot in life.
Fan: Never. I'll never like the new trilogy. You've failed, your highness. I am a true fan, like my father before me.
Emperor Lucastine: So be it... fan.
I love SW... I just hate the terrible scripts of Epi1 and Epi2.

Ok, I'm as much as a geek as the rest, and I liked StarWars.. But I'm not buying the DVD, never. Why? Lucas doesn't deserve my money anymore. Not counting the latest (earliest) installments of Ep IV and V.. Lucas held out for too long on making these DVDs. Had he made them.. say 5 years ago, I would have bought, now, I realized that a) I can live without them, and b) Lucas just wants as much as my money as possible, without doing anything more to earn it.
Don't you hate it when the aliens keep killing your mom, because you couldn't stop them? Tired of people making you their slave? Poor acting skills? Not anymore. JEDIXXX can turn any slave kid, or any whiny teenager into a bad@$$ jedi-killing machine. Our labs have wanked^H^H^H^H^Horked long and hard on a formula containing midichlorians that can turn even the most clumsy klutz into a Jedi knight. Accept no imitations. This is the real Jango Fett. Here are some satisfied consumers:
.
"Small I was. Weak I was. Planes now I lift. Light sabers I wield. JEDIXXX eat. Then and only then, a Jedi, you will be" -- Yoda Da Man
"I used to go by the book, but now I'm one bad muthu$%#@3r thanks to JEDIXXX" -- Samwise L. Jackson
"Meesa talked-a just-a like this-a until I ate some JEDIXXX" -- Jar Jar Binks-a
"Without JEDIXXX, I never would have been able to kill flies with chopsticks, heal people by rubbing my hands together, or beat the crap out of whiny teenagers who tormented my students." -- Mr. Miyagi
"I was just a lucky race-pod racing slave of a kid, and a whiny arrogant teenager, who couldn't stop the aliens from killing my mom, and only got married when a queen pitied me for my poor acting skills. Then I ate JEDIXXX, and I became a bad@$$ mechanical jedi-killing machine. And a father. It's true. JEDIXXX makes sense." -- Anakin Skywalker
Unfortunately JEDIXXX still has to be completely tested to be available for public consumption. Before you dismiss completely the possibility of sending a donation, think of that 1 slave kid, or 1 arrogant whiny teenager that you know. Ask yourself whether there is any reason to believe that he or she couldn't possibly become a bad@$$ jedi. Forget them. Those are not reasons. Please send all donations to emperorpalpatine@NOSPAMjedicreation.com

I thought I remembered quite a bit of info on various "making-of" shows that showed the original models, how they did cutting-edge special effects on a shoestring budget, and the occasional flaws that made it through (like a TIE fighter shadow where the fighter itself had been removed).
I remember watching those when I was a kid. The one on The Empire Strikes Back clearly sticks out in my mind. I was about 11 or 12 then and this was the first time I had ever gotten a chance to see movie magic in the making. I remember being stunned at the painstaking process of stop-motion animation that was used to animate the AT-ATs. The fact that they actually built a full-scale X-wing fighter that was lifted by a crane to simulate Yoda lifting the fighter out of the Degoba swamp. The Degoba sound stage, incidently, was the largest indoor stage in the world at that time. The rebel fighters who formed the ground forces on Hoth were actually Norwegian (or Scandanavian) people who didn't understand a lot of the english instructions being called out by the director.
I also remember fondly The Making of Return of the Jedi. They showed how some poor linguist sap had to don a giant Admiral Ackbar arm puppet and control his lips to match the sounds without being able to see Ackbar's mouth! I could go on and on. Those shows were great!
Does anyone have any idea how I can get copies of these? If there was any legal way of obtaining them, I'd gladly pay for them. However, as with so many things these days, they have disappeared into the ether because of the neglect of the copyright owners so I assume that I will have to rely on bootlegs. Please, any help would be appreciated.
And, oh yeah, what the fuck is wrong with you Lucas? What are you trying to pull with this "there aren't a lot of behind-the-scenes materials available for the original films" bullshit? Christ, at least you could have said that whatever stuff you did have all rotted because of failure to preserve it. To say there weren't a lot of behind-the-scenes materials shot is an obvious lie.

I saw the link the AC left to it in another thread and I was actually considering ordering it. Too bad the quality is no good, but I'm glad that I didn't waste my money on it.
Yea the "remastered editions" will have some stupid crap added to them, but at least the picture and sound will be superb.
If you wanna get rich, you know that payback is a bitch
There is a petition online to try and gain mass support to get the oringinal trilogy published on DVD. They have almost 45,000 digital signatures. Let's slashdot that number up to 100k.

Is a cock. Why the hell has he waited so long to release the original DVDs of the movies that made him a demi-God to the geeks?
I know that there was a laser-disc edition released a while-back. Was he waiting for the DVD standard to die??
George Lucas has really made me a sad geek with his last two Starwars episodes. I think for a lot of people when I say that they should never have been made.
Yes, George Lucas is a cock.
Let's see.. Widescreen edition from EBay for all three films. Captured on a DVD-RAM drive and then authored with menus, chapter points, cover art from the original trilogy VHS set, and a few "special features". They look great, have Pro Logic 2 channel audio that sounds really quite good.
I'd have to say, I'm happy to have these films on DVD and they look great. Lucas can bite me.
They're holding out on the DVD release to pysche people up... not going to happen here. When it comes out, great. But you won't see me jerking off to it - it's a great trilogy, but it isn't so golden as to be dangled like a carrot. Sorry, it's just another good set of movies - and old at that. Dragging out the release date is bullshit - you know it and I know it. So when it does come out, you can bet your ass I'll be burning copies of it just to screw over Lucas a bit for his inflated ego.
WAKE UP! IT'S NOT THE BIBLE! IT'S A FUCKING MOVIE!
Am I the only one to notice how all the troll posts dont get modded down as fast. Maybe its because all the crap they are saying is true.
When is The Star Wars Christmas Special coming out on DVD? THAT will signal that the apocalypse is on us...
I can't wait.
1. Notice how Empire is modified the least. Even Lucas knows which one not to touch too much :)
2. 03. Yoda is CG. Yoda disappears leaving his clothes behind like Obi-Wan now. Hmm. Yoda always did disappear leaving his clothes behind when he died. Something I'm missing?
3. I notice some deleted scenes (I assume from 20 years ago) being added. That would rock! Also, if they could clean up the Jabba scene in ANH I'd be pretty happy. When I was a kid the rumor'd "Jabba" footage got shown on TV years after the movie came out, and we all thought it was cool to see how Lucas had been planning this way back when. It was the only good thing to happen to the "new" trilogy, and it'd be nice if it wasn't so awkward when Han walks behind him.
Of course, this is probably all nonsense, because it looks too good to be true. Some of the re-scoring seems pointless and gratuitous, having that snotnosed Christenson around ruins it, but otherwise, not all that bad considering what he could have done.
And probably will.
Endless arguments over trivial contradictions in books written by ignorant savages to explain thunder in the dark.

George,
It's recently been hinted at that the first three Star Wars movies will soon be released on DVD.
If they are "Special Edition" only I will not buy them.
I fondly remember waiting in line after line after line to see the original Star Wars again and again and again. I and others helped it become the phenomenon that it is today.
We want the film we remember, not the second hand copy of it. It may be your definitive vision but it's not what made the film great to us. The film, and the maker of the film, was human. Human inspired. Human created. Human infused. That's what drew us to the films - it was about _us_ not you. The hero or villain was us not anybody else. Our dreams were wrapped in sand, space, and blades of light.
*ahem*
Brass tacks...
There is one more thing your should note. Sales are going to be down. Not a little - a lot.
This is because even though you made the movie for you - we made you able to make the movies. Now we're angry because you've changed the movies that we helped you by buying. We'd gladly buy them again if they were the same movies. But they aren't - because you've forgotten that the dreams you create live not only in your heart but in the hearts of others.
I've said my piece. What you do is up to you but I hope you take to heart the things I've said and remember them when it comes time to maybe allow the "original" non-edited version out on DVD.
If you want us to pay you to view your dreams you have to enable us to make them our own otherwise what are we paying for?
Sincerely,
A concerned Star Wars fan...
"Bah!" - Dogbert
I have an old behind-the-scenes video about the original Star Wars made before Empire Strikes Back. In it, the actors talk about possiblities for their characters in the upcoming sequels and make it clear that at that point Darth Vader wasn't Luke's father, and there was a chance that there might be a romantic involvement between Luke and Leia (Carrie Fisher wasn't sure whether she prefered Luke or Han).
So the way I see it, Lucas would have to edit all of that stuff out if he wants people to keep thinking that he had the whole story planned out from the start.
What's the shelf life on those clones anyway? I'll admit that the idea that "stormtrooper aim" is due to the fact that they're all geriatrics, or that when the original set started to get long in the tooth the copied the copies and thus introduced errors that way, but it doesn't make any real sense.
I don't really believe that the incompetents we see in the original trilogy can be the same as the competent stormtroopers in the new trilogy. Even accounting for the inevitable deterioration in skill once they "switched" to the bad side (as is mandated in some obscure movie code) they _still_ suck too much to be the same clones.
The reason the clone army was manufactured the way it was was because they were being developed by a subversive group that needed to keep their activites secret. They paid through the nose both for the secrecy and the quality.
After that though Palpatine is in charge of the Republic-cum-Empire, and do you think the same person/government who decided the best route to go for military craft was Tie Fighters (noted for being inferior and thereby cheap and easy to replace, thus "explaining" why the Rebels could win against such bad numerical odds) would continue to pay high prices for high quality clones? No! After he was firmly in power he'd get new recruits the way every other despotic government does. Recruiting Joe Average volunteers at best, forced conscriptions at worst.
Given how many stormtroopers there must be in the galaxy at the time of the original trilogy, and given that the original clones would be about 40 years old relative at least, you'd expect the clones to be few and far between, and the rank and file to be filled with normal people recruited (by whatever means) and trained (however badly) after the Clone War.

lines back in the 70's (when very young) to see
the first film. I've NEVER waited in a line that
long before, or since, for anything. Not even
at the USPS (U.S. Postal Service). I wanted these
on DVD. Bad! I waited, and waited. No DVD's!
George Lucas didn't want my money when I wanted
to give it to him, and he made me wait and wait,
and I decided I was done waiting. I sold my
Star Wars VHS tapes on eBay (whichever set came
in the Gold box), and I'm done. Not just with
SW, but with ANYTHING that SOB does. RotLA? NO!
AG? NO! Games? NO! Anything new? NO! He can
kiss my ass. He'll have to build his next mansion
with some other suckers money. I've moved on.
There, I feel MUCH better now.

I *knew* people were going to say this when the release date came out. You people want the original trilogy on DVD, but you don't want more than one re-release that you "have to" spend money on. Half the geek world wanted it on DVD, even without special features. But that just meant that there'd be a full featured version later. And then you'd slam him for being a money grubber. I'm a Star Wars fan myself, but FWIW, it's Lucas' story, and you all bought into it. You don't have to buy it.

i hope thats a sick joke. may be interesting to see, but i wouldnt pay for it, and i definitely want the orignals on dvd. bleh. ill never be throwing out my tapes of the originals, thats for sure.
By and large, language is a tool for concealing the truth. -- George Carlin
The packaging was a little cruder than I expected from LucasArts, though. And some of the subtitles were misspelled. And the DVD was a funny color...
That is the set I will buy. I can wait. I have patience. And by then, my kids will be old enough to appreciate it.
There is nothing so silly as other peoples traditions, and nothing so sacred as our own.
That George wont tweak them any more! Just give un the originals George! Please! We beg of you. We dont want to watch the originals we loved suffer and die while you discus what new changes to make in a commitee!

IT'S A TRAP!
Would it not be better to what for him to release all six of the movies on DVD... O.k. You'd have to wait an additional few years as well for the "special edition" as well. Oh, well, I'll attempt to avoid this... I foresee a Christmas present though... Arggh. I have the VHS and the SE VHS tapes, DO I really need the DVDs? I'd rather have the B5 Season 3... I've grown to like a plot.
This year, or end of 2004? Since the second half of the animated series won't come out on Cartoon Network till March, 2004, I'm assuming that's a typo...
The DVD will have both. When you stick it in the machine you can choose between the original and the new one. Or on another disc. They did that with the Akira DVD i recently bought. I doubt it though but it would be nice.

Glad to have my Laserdisc, I am.
When Lucas releases movies he's a greedy bastard who's millking us. When it DOESN"T release movies he's a greed bastard who's doing a suckey job of milking us. Gimme a break.
-------- In Soviet Russia, "Soviet Russia" sigs hate Slashdot.
It's so frustrating to watch Greedo shoot first in the special edition. For what, 20 years, Han has been the character that in Episode IV went from scoundrel to hero.
I didn't mind all the CG fluff like the droids in Mos Eisley, or the dewbacks. But having Greedo shoot, then Han retaliate changes Han's character considerably. When the audience is first introduced to Han, they were just as uneasy about him as Luke was. Seeing him bust a cap in Greedo's smarmy ass doubled that feeling. Watching him turn into the unlikely hero was just as important as Luke's development. Why change that after 20 years?
So please Mr. Lucas, use the DVD technology to allow play of the original release. You know, the one that millions saw a long time ago...

Does anyone think Lucas will put a digitally enhanced version of the 1977 holiday special, AKA A very Wookie Christmas? Now that would be as good as the extended LOTR disks!!!
Today is a gift. Save the receipt.
Heros have been flawed for thousands of years, and some time in the 1990's politcal correctness ends this too? I'll keep my VHS and hope for a pre-George Bush version on DVD sometime in my lifetime. Something tells me I better take my vitamins.
I'm quite fond of cock. I can't say the same about Lucas.
Yeah, I wish he put these out in a more timely manner, but his official reason is that he didn't have the time to spend on them that he wanted. Let's give him the benefit of the doubt for a second...
I remember back when the original trilogy was being put out on VHS, it was made very clear that you could get the original trilogy, "one last time." Now, I remember thinking about buying them, but then I decided not to. Not because I thought they'd actually put them out on another format (although I'm sure plenty of folks did), but just because I wasn't interested enough.
Anyway, I imagine there'd be quite a few people upset if the originals came out on DVD, complaining that they were told that the originals were going to be available only "one last time."
One final comment. I decided to finally read the Lord of the Rings books before the movies came out. In the introduction, it's mentioned how many revisions the book went through. Edits by Tolkien and then later by his son. Now, I understand that printed literature is a different medium than cinema, but I've personally never heard anyone complain about Tolkien making edits to his story, to fit closer to his creative vision.
Ah well. It's only entertainment. :)
If all you have are silver bullets, everything looks like a werewolf.
What are you waiting for? Digitize that shit and put it on KaZaA! Like that other dude said, we're never going to get this stuff through legit channels!
Uhh... ok. My mistake I guess. I thought the topic was Star Wars.
Are the Storm Troopers clones? I thought they were regular people. I realize the clone army was clones, but I didn't think the storm troopers were clones. . .
Ok I have HAD ENUGH. A buddy calls me up and tells me all these changes that are "supposed" to be in the movie. EX All Stormtropers are clones and that there voice will be Jango Fett's, and that he red it on /. So I look. and here you are all are bitching about something happening that you have no clue of maybe it will be a "super duper very extra special edition" or maybe it'll be the Special editions, with Gredo shooting first or...... I'm sorry all I heard was Bla Bla Bla I'm guessing on all of this cuz I'm an arm chair director. I'll tell you what all of you just give up on the whole thing and mail all your collectables (that I know all us geeks have) to me. Or hang on and complain after they come out. PS VADER ALWAYS HAS FALLEN INTO LAVA.

...a thousand must die. That's the ONLY way to fix Jedi.
The idea of the Empire failing due to budgetary constraints would actually be a return to a favorite theme of Lucas's. Consider THX-1138, where THX escapes simply because the city feels it's uneconomic to spend any more money catching him.
GCHQ Quantum Insert installed. If only our tongues were made of glass, how much more careful we would be when we speak
First, the DVD will only be available as a collection.
Second, there will be several options for viewing the film: Luke can view the Imperial Star Destroyer with his binoculars from Tatooine or not, the Storm Troopers can speak in the voice of Jango Fett or not, Greedo or Han can shoot first, Yoda can be green or not, IG-88 can have a specially expanded role or not, the Snaggletooths can have politically correct dentistry or not, the Ewoks can look and sound like Ewoks or like Wookies, Anakin Skywalker can speak in the voice of Hayden Christensen or not, and Lando can get out of the second Death Star in time or not.
For episodes 1-3, special edition DVDs, there is a rumor that Natalie Portman's voice will be electronically replaced with the voice of Debbie Reynolds, the actual mother of Carrie Fisher.
I can't wait.
A proposal to the Star Wars community-at-large. How many people would be interested in re-writing and re-doing Episodes I, II, and III to make them of the same epic quality as Episodes IV, V, and VI? And how many people would be interested in writing and filming Episodes VII, VIII, and IX -- which had been planned from the start but something Lucas abandoned in the more recent years? From my way of thinking, I figure once Lucas dies (which I hope is here soon), then filming can begin on the REAL movies.
Seth Anderson BTW, I'm not 23 anymore -- I am TexasCowboy26 now. =)
You know, like five minutes into Star Wars, the whole fall of the Empire coulda been averted by that Star Destroyer temp and his manager -- the ones who gave us this conversation:
"There goes another escape pod..."
"Wait, scanners show no lifeforms... it must've malfunctioned... don't bother shooting it."
(I'm paraphrasing)
But had they shot it, well, that would been an awfully short film.
Although I seem to recall many Bothans dying getting the rebels some information... would it have been enough without the tech specs from R2? Who knows, perhaps the rebels would've have to sneak into the Death Star like the Checy Chase's SNL Land Shark....
"Who is this? What's your operating number?"
"CandyGram..."
Well, that's a nice reminder of how slashcode works. The sig is inserted dynamically, of course (which makes sense since users can choose to hide sigs), so now that you've fixed your sig this whole exchange makes no sense whatsoever. Cruel, cruel to us poor meta-moderators.
What was the original sig with virii in it? I know you fixed the "true measure or a good coder" thing, because I remember noticing the typo in the original one (I was a writing tutor in college for 3 years, and I can't help seeing all errors... but I don't point them out anymore). I like that sig -- it reminds me of this:
"There are two ways of constructing a software design; one way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies. The first method is far more difficult."
