The case starts in Italy (=state law) and is passed up to the European court in Brussels (=federal law). Do not let a Europhile read those terms but that is what it is equivalent to. It does not matter what is decided at local level, if Brussels decides otherwise the local law is trumped.
I am not talking about region locked, I am saying that if I go into a store, they cannot get the supplies. Amazon etc. do not sell to every country. I have been travelling in some different countries like Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan etc. Some stock does come in but it little and old. On the other hand there are plenty of street markets willing to take up the slack. I am in Thailand at the moment and there is a large ex pat community who would think nothing of buying good quality original disks but when they are not available, even the honest people will behave like the locals when there is no choice. The labels do things like release out of date stock at give away prices here to say that are catering to local budget but the locals see what is on at the cinema and what is being talked about on TV and want to see what the fuss is about. If they want people to behave they have to allow them to before they complain that the people are not behaving.
In 2 you seem to overlook the part that in general it is not the creators that are worried about their revenue flow. Everyone in these discussions talks about the poor starving artist but they do not get the $ms that is being protected here. I know several musicians and they rely on performances for income, it is the record labels that take the profits from CD sales. It is the big companies that are trying to protect their profits by making you feel sorry for the poor starving artists that they never have any sympathy for themselves. Does anyone actually believe that Tolkien will get a share of the money from the DVD sales? There are a few big name stars that have a share but most just paid a small amount and have no stake in actual sales.
I kept out of this discussion generally because I am lucky enough not to live in the US and do not have to worry about such stupid rules as 6 strikes. I do want to point out that certain shows like Game of Thrones are not available to me other than on torrent. America is just a little part of the planet and the rest of the population are going to want access stuff, so we will. It therefore becomes available to those in US as they can freely access our market. I actually asked about why certain Blu Ray titles were not available to buy (can still download or buy copies at the market) and was told that if they are released in my country, people will copy them and sell pirate copies!!!
Newsflash: The lack of legitimate avenues creates a massive market for the copies!
and before people start trying to tell me about Amazon, iTunes etc. please check your facts, they restrict which countries they sell to. Outside the US and Europe (most of the world) torrent is the main place to go and the only other option is the local market where the quality is not good.
My computer has a plastic case (like most laptops) and does not have a problem with EM...
I am looking at cases at the moment and thinking about my next desktop. The price of this computer is not the problem as like others have said, the case is the one component that last through several incarnations of the desktop computer. I want a good strong case that will evolve with the computer. I will however want a case in which I can design and control the airflow and this case does not allow that. Most people just stick on more fans without thinking about airflow but it is much more important than what the case is made out of.
Unions are like communism, it sounds good in theory but is impossible to get it to work in practice. I used to be deputy FOC of a print union so I do have some background with them.
He was arrested because 2 of his 'friends' grassed him up. Facebook was just a trivial part of the non story that gave it a tenuous link to this site. If you read it you will even find out that being drunk is not even a real part of the story as all the police can show is that his car was in an accident and he did not stop.
Wait a month and then seriously main the 2 friends.
A lot of people have this strange idea that regular phone calls still go down wires to other countries but they do not. For decades the phone companies have been economising by routing all international calls over the internet.
I take out a Skype subscription when I am away for phone calls. You cannot beat their price but for video you should should try Oovoo. It is not popular yet but the quality is a lot better than Skype. Oovoo do not charge for group video chat either like Skype do. I have Google Voice, Skype and Oovoo (and Yahoo and MSN) and Oovoo is by far the best. Google are often cheapest for phone calls if you do not have a current subscription with Skype. Skype are getting worse now. I had thought that M$ were running them down to kill but that seems wrong now they have made it clear that they are going to kill MSN instead. I use all of these a lot and over the past couple of years Skype has got a lot worse.
I think that Facebook is like the modern day version of AOL. It has a collection of things in one place for those that are not computer literate to use easily. It does nothing well but it tries to do everything. My son wants to chat with me on FB and I tell him, switch to Skype but he finds FB easier??? I cannot understand this but I see it a lot (please, I am not saying Skype is the best, just better than FB). People now use FB instead of email but it only works with FB users (like AOL) and they can chat with other FB users on their chat (like AOL used to do) and now they can talk to other FB users... so they are scared to leave FB as it means they can no longer chat with their friends... It is just a clever lock in that people will tire of just like with AOL.
There is far more than just age. If someone is doing it for profit, then they should be treated as a criminal but it should be up to the *IAA to show that intent. When people get taken to court for playing the radio in their shop I feel that it has gone too far. The profit link is far too tenuous. If a college kid copies his friends album, that is not a criminal (wrong yes, but it should not be a crime) but I do agree that Megaupload were making a business out of it and should be prosecuted. When I was a child we went scrumping (taking apples from the farmers trees), which is stealing. We did not see it as stealing but we did know it was wrong. If we got caught the police were not involved and it was dealt with by our parents. A couple of years ago 2 12 year olds went to court for that and were convicted of theft. I could not work as a teacher if I had a criminal record, it would effect my career, I think that it is wrong to make children into criminals for trivia. It also removes that child's fear of becoming a criminal, they already are one.
As a teacher, I rely on fair use but that has been eroded. I often display and share sections of other peoples work. This is fair use and if anything I am advertising. I have so many copies that I risk prosecution myself under the current witch hunt. There are so many reasons that I could go on about to say that we need to stop this crazy Mafia as they they are eroding out society but I do not really think that I can change anything. Most people are happy to brand the rest of the world, those who are too poor, as criminals. Do you really think that the average person in south east Asia, earning $100 a month is going to pay for music? Too many variants.
I had my electric razor start in my bag in Guangzhou and they made me go back through check in and open my luggage and turn it off. Their was no tension, they were still smiling at my embarrassment all the way. The took me back air side afterwards but there was never any implication that it was a threat. They just wanted me to be there when the bag was opened and it was checked out. Why is that China is the one that is always pictured as the police state when I am always treated far better there?
I travelled a lot with my son and he caused enough scares to turn me grey. We were immediately surrounded by armed police in Thailand when they saw a gun in his carry on as it went through x-ray... It was a very realistic BB gun that he had bought in the market in Bangkok without telling me... and in China he tried to get 2 small swords on a plane and they would not let him...Thankfully he has now left home and gone to university.
I do not need a new word, there are already correct expressions in use. The rest is also trite. The creator did not expect reimbursement from some spotty 15 year old who was never going to buy his programme anyway. What the developer wants is fair treatment and good sales. He is entitled to that. The whole issue needs to step down a few notches and readjust. Commercial copying should be treated as a serious crime and I have no problem with that but if my son gets caught with a copy of his friends game on his way home tonight and he gets treated like a thief, I change sides. The whole think is fast becoming a witch hunt and innocent children are being turned into criminals for doing exactly what we did when we were there age. You may tell me that you never copied your friends album but I am sure that you did. You did not make money out of it, you were not starting out on a life of crime, it did not encourage you to become a terrorist... but you did it.
Lots, I have large cardboard boxes of games but I still need to download NOCD cracks and like above, I want to see if the game works as it says. I do not mind paying for good work but I have been burnt in the past and want things that do what I want them to do. I am one of those guys that even bought Linux in box because it came with good manuals. Normally I pay for the support as well. If I am getting what I am paying for, I have no objection.
Are you completely lacking in logic or do you just fail to see it. It does not matter how bad murder is, it is not relevant in a discussion about online gambling. It does not matter how wrong copying software is, it is still not theft. You can rant all you like but the total lack of logic and overdose of drama just makes a lot of people stop listening. I have software that I have written that I know is being copied but I still say that it is not theft. It is copying. All the drama is bad for me because when I complain people start making jokes about jolly rogers instead of listening.
Check out what you are talking about. Transmitting pictures of child sex is not covered by mens rea, just like drug possession and several other offences. In the world up to now it was hard to imagine a situation where someone did that by accident but with these you can commit such an offence, and have no legal defence, without meaning to.
The really surreal part is that under the current legal system, transmitting./supplying child porn across the internet is a more serious crime than actually having sex with a child. The point is that seeing something, wearing these, can be more of a crime than doing it and you are going to provide the evidence against yourself...
Not wishing to burst your bubble but I watch a movie while another one is downloading. You do not have to stop your life and watch it download. It just does it while you sleep or work.
That may be true but it in no way makes physical theft (where an actual object is taken and the owner is deprived of that object) the same as copying (where no object is taken). The corporations want to make the analogy in order to make the plebs see copying as theft but it is a slight of hand. They are not the same thing and only the terminally stupid would fall for the trick.

Because, even if it was a truly open case, you would still need airflow to avoid overheating... duh.
Thank you for that pile of bull, we needed a good laugh and you have reached a new height in Slashdot stupidity.

Or walk into an art gallery with a camera. You can search the web for your favourite painting and download a copy without anyone blinking.
