Your last point - SCO have stopped anyone from correcting the problem that they complain of and expect the courts to see them as a victim. I hope that some of the Linux distros sue SCO for any loss of earnings whilst this unreasonable uncertainty continues.
I also wish more people (outwith the/. community) would realise that this is a problem of SCOs own creation.
There are a lot of us that are happy to stay in the free world. I have spent enough time in the US and although there is a lot I like, if they want to export their crazy legal system then I have no need to go there again.
Most reasonable legal systems will not accept that any agreement is binding if you do not fully understand what you are agreeing to. If you agreed to the EULA after a month of use it could be seen as binding but as you have to click on the button before you have even installed the package it becomes meaningless. Many legal systems cannot accept licenses that control what you do with your own property once you have bought it.
So the basic law ends up at copyright level which is where I think it should be. As long as you do not copy someone elses stuff without their permisson, anything goes. Remember the Borland rules - 'think of it as a book. as long as it is only being read in one place at a time then that is OK'. OK, SuSE is different (read better):)
They probably bought the full retail with commercial software added on SuSe Linux, which costs about the same, or more, than Windows.
You only buy one copy of SuSE instead of one copy for each machine....
Given the MS Licensing policy, they probably have to buy new copies of Windows to run in VMWare anyway, since the licenses are non-transferable (and all that).
I do not know German law but European law in general does not recognise licensing and they only need to keep to copyright laws. i.e. they can sell old copies or transfer to another machine all they like as long as they do not use it on 2 machines or sell copies of it.
I think you both have a point. I am paranoid enough to want a shredder but too tight with my money to buy one. So I never leave my rubbish out overnight. So anyone wandering along my street looking for a new 'identity' is more likely to use one of my neighbours rubbish bags that gets left out overnight. The bin men arrive at 09:00 and I get up at 07:00 so I have no real problem. Some of my neighbours feel that they are in too much of a rush in the morning but I think that is very dangerous.
As someone with very high security clearance I find your assumption amusing:) and you answer does not cover my point. If a doris at a hospital sees an error, then I would rather she queried it. I frequently query things that look wrong to me. I do not always find out the result of my query but that is not the point. If I see what looks like an error it would be remiss of me if I did not investigate; especially in the the current climate of increased security. That does mean I sometimes look at records that are not relevant to me. I have to own up to this before I get asked about it but it is something that is expected of me rather than something that is seen as wrong. If I saw a record for someone that I did not know and I ignored that record it could turn out to be someone using our system to spy on sensitive sites.
I would think that in a hospital it is more important for people to flag up possible errors and to look into things like false names. If the false name was in a VD clinic then maybe it should be ignored but what about areas where dangerous drugs are given out? If someone dies from an overdose because they are being prescribed 8 times the required dose of some drug that makes them happy could the hospital be held responsible for that negligence?
So if a Doris sees 2 entries for Fred Bloggs she cannot correct the error until she has contacted both Fred Bloggs to ask their permission to delete the duplicate. Except she cannot look at the data to find out the address unless she writes to them and asks for permission...
The British used to do this a lot during WWII. In north Africa the Germans were very impressed with the maps they 'captured' from dead British tank commanders as they were so detailed. The maps had been specially written with hazards where the British felt weak and less hazards than there were in reality, where the British defences were strongest. Even at the end of the war the Germans were still saying that the British maps were best and had not caught on:)
They're talking about theft of copyrighted material.
NO - they are talking about copying copyright material. Theft is to take something that does not belong to you with the intention of permenantly depriving the owner of said thing. When I copy something I do not 'take' it and I do not intend to permenantly deprive anyone of it.
And I never arrive in a huge sailing ship shouting "shiver me timbers, me hearties"...
Please let us stop pandering to the hype. This is no different from what these prima donas did at college when they taped another guys LPs.
It is a problem but it is not the problem that it is being hyped up to.
I am having trouble with all this red tape and would like your help with my rocket programme. I think that you should slacken the rules for us hard done by amateur rocket makers...
I also wonder if you could help fund my rocket programme like you have helped with my other projects in the past?
I sometimes find it hard to accept that otherwise intelligent people can see a good bit of humour as a troll. I was considering writing a longer version in the same vein myself as I see a parallel between the Linux zealots and the muslim zealots. Yet people here put this down in the same light as the GNAA crap. No wonder so many resort to rubbish like that if good comment is treated in this way.
I realise that American law is very weird but I have not seen any reason to believe that IF the code was copied, that it was IBM that copied it. It is equally reasonable to assume that it was SCO that copied it while they were actively supporting Linux. Maybe the code was taken from Linux and incorporated into SCO Unix... who knows?
It is ridiculous to assume that without any evidence other than that there is duplicate code, it should be concluded that IBM copied it. Then again it is an American court...
In Thailand most of the gaming does take place in cafes. Most of the time the cafes in non-tourist areas are more like lan parties and during the day most businesses send someone there to do all the computer work that is needed. It is very different to countries where most people have their own computer.

There are lots of serious problems with this technology and the problems have already started. If you are on jury duty and the police say "This man is definately the murderer because his DNA matches", would you find him guilty? I think most people would. The problem is that we are dealing with statistics and they are often wrong. As the DNA database gets larger the risk of 2 identical DNA fingerprints gets greater. Add that to the fact that they only match a limited number of markers making the risk of a mistake greater.
IBM now sues SCO, claiming that it was obviously SCO that released the code into Linux (as IBM say they did not and SCO HAVE released the code in their version of Linux) after 'selling' the use of the code to IBM, thereby devalueing IBM's version. I am sure that IBM would not have paid as much for the code if they had known that it was soon to become freely available.
If you are doing something illegal you would change your plates. It is only ordinary people that cross the line that these systems penalise. They penalise enough to earn a lot of money though...
You talk like a saint but are you really trying to say that you never exceed the speed limit? even if you didn't mean to? Well now you WILL get a ticket.
But the wide boy in his racer will wear false plates or register at a false address and leave you to pay the bills...
Iraq was a strategic threat in the larger war against terrorists.
This is a lie. Saddam was opposed to terrorists and the Islamic fundamentalists (like al Qaida) were opposed to Saddam because he is not Islamic and was not prepared to run an Islamic state. The only terrorist camp that the west found in Iraq was in the north where it was outside Iraqi control. We were told he supported terrorism to justify the war but we were lied to.
Iraq was not threatening us in any way. It is us that is threatening us. By killing lots of innocent people we make all their relations seek revenge and the only way for them to achieve that is to become terrorists. The military will not tell you about all the innocent people that get killed because they want you to believe that few are killed. We make the psychotics by killing their people.
The first girl in bomber in Israel was not a fanatic, she was a paramedic. She had to pick up the bodies of dead Palestinians every day while the world did not care. How would you feel if you saw your friends and neighbours being killed all the time? You would want revenge. You would call it guerilla action or something like that but you would not just role over and let the invader wipe out America. The Palestinians feel the same and the Iraqis will as well. The Afghanistans are famous for it.
The whole Microsoft staff end up in Gauntanamo bay without trail or legal representation :) Seems fair to me...

I could not understand at first what you thought either the British or the Americans had to do with Napolean attacking Russia :)
If there had not been such major events going on in Europe in 1812 Britain may have taken more of an interest in what was going on over there...
