Read the original Project Athena book. They did this once, long ago.
You definitely need some kind of network authentication thing, like NIS/yp, etc.
A single-sign-on for filesystem access would be nice (like Kerberized nfs.. don't know if CODA or AFS has this ootb).
There *are* going to be exceptions to the standard list of packages installed. If there aren't you'll end up with a larger package set that is the union of all requirements, or you'll end up with dissatisfied users.
Consider having a cron job that dumps a listing of installed packages into a directory on the admin server, so when that user's machine gets nuked you know what was installed there.
What "trim" said about directing all mail to a relay and disabling all unneeded daemons. But you might want to leave ssh on so you can install an extra package for someone without walking out there if need be.
also if you're recording audio while monitoring (listening to) audio already recorded, iow multitracking, 2ms latency is acceptable, and 50ms is unusable.
Back in '81 we did just that...all the operators had their own pair of airport-style ear protecters for those 10 hour shifts in a room containing 20 freight-train-size DEC 10s.
First of all, braids do not equal dreadlocks. They aren't the same thing.
Second, either braids or dreads might make sense if you ran out of soap 10 years ago.
Third, in a hunter-gatherer civilization, lack of time to braid or twist up your hair is not a problem. You won't be up late at night surfing or watching the tube, so what else to do ?
What's good about the movie ? The aliens were so dumb it hinted at satire, which is quite true to the L. Ron Hubbard style.
I've submitted at least two references to articles in Analog and/or it's sister publication Asimov's, both of which were far more relevant to/. readers (IP-related), and they were rejected without comment. Slow day maybe ?
Multitrack, Random Access, and editing is why you don't use DAT except for mastering, and CD burners have just about made that redundant too.
Multitrack means recording 8 or 16 or 24 or however many tracks and then mixing down (to a.wav file, with effects, all in software within the box).
Random access means instant access to any point in time during the recording. And Editing is real important too. Want to move that chunk of music around ? Just select and drag, or whatever. You get the idea.
Granted, DAT is the way to go for a 2-channel recording of a performance, but that's not studio work, that's live work.
I saw an e-beam litho lab being put together at DEC in '84-'85. It was so sensitive that the vibrations of a truck driving by would throw it off. So they sat it on a 20 ton block of concrete which was on rubber bearings, like earth-quake bearings.
I guess it takes a while to get this stuff near the production phase !
Well, since here in MA no non-democrat can ever get an electoral vote, and since the democratic nominee is all but decided before our primary, my vote is *always* a throwaway. But I do it anyway. I'm not sure why.
As Isaac Asimov said (in his autobio), L. Ron Hubbard should have stuck to Science Fiction. Some of it is pretty good. Asimov could already see that Scientology was a "bad thing". Personally, I only got about half-way through the scientology book before I concluded that these people were psuedo-science spouting lunatics.
And on another note, if you're lucky enough to have an NT workstation that is stable for several years without DisKeeper, you will be very happy you bought DisKeeper.
It was a no-brainer for MS to buy DisKeeper, or the rights to it or whatever. It's badly needed on any seriously active NT (FAT or NTFS) file system.
I had pain and numbness in my fingers, and it turned out my problem was in my shoulders, not my wrists. The tip-off is that your thumb and your little finger get numb too. With CTS they usually don't.
I went to a physical therapist but it didn't help much. Then I went to a chiropractor. Wow! big improvement.
Ergonomics-wise, don't sit too far from your keyboard. Reaching out with your shoulders is what does you in. This means if your gut is too big like mine you have to have the keyboard jambed right in there, but it helps.
Midiman's Multi-mixer 6 ($100) will do what you want but you'll have to split your 3 stereo inputs into 6 monos and then pan hard left/right, etc. They have a 10 channel with two stereo inputs for $120.

I seem to remember a tiny little mixer that just used trim pots for gain controls, but I can't remember who made it.
Wow.. the first thing I ever saw resembling a network was a gandalf terminal switch in 1980.
It's availability was what pushed us to switch from 20ma current-loop to EIA (RS-232) for terminal muxes on the DEC 10s, 20s and RSTS machines.
Disk is cheap. Buy more.
Not that this is a solution anyway.

and with advances in materials science, (ceramics, etc) Stirling engines might even work !
Uh, yeah, if someone is telnetted in and editing their email message in pine/pico, etc, you can watch them writing their messages.

I'd be really impressed if it was that cheap.
You could probably get the pc cards for $500, but then there are the bridges, antennas and cables...

$3,600 for 11Mb/s over 3.5 miles. We were just going about 500 yards, but right through some power lines and over an aligator-infested canal.

Actually Macs rule the pro-music market pretty much. The standard is something called "Pro Tools" from Digidesign.
There are some solutions that run on NT 4 now, but they're still a minority.
On the other hand the semi-pro market is pretty much all on the Win95/98 platform.
yes, and the RMV will gladly sell your driver's license records to the highest bidder.
Anyone old enough remember those little license-plate shaped key tags you used to get in the mail from some veterans' group ?
I guess it takes a while to get this stuff near the production phase !
Since there are lots of Windows boxes with no virus protection...
It seems like an obvious thing to me.
Also, this would make a DDoS attack using real http GETs more plausible. No way to tell 'em from real users. It just clobbers you with real hits.

Can IBM support both Linux and Monterrey going forward ? Should they ?
this from a guy who quote Aleister Crowley (Diary of a Drug Fiend) in his .sig... :-)
Hopefully someone thinks of sending in a 'bot to do that soon...

Radio Shack stuff is horribly noisy.
