  1. gandalf on Linux Ported to Cisco Routers, BSD chosen by router manufacturers · · Score: 1

Wow.. the first thing I ever saw resembling a network was a gandalf terminal switch in 1980.

It's availability was what pushed us to switch from 20ma current-loop to EIA (RS-232) for terminal muxes on the DEC 10s, 20s and RSTS machines.

Read the original Project Athena book. They did this once, long ago.

You definitely need some kind of network authentication thing, like NIS/yp, etc.

A single-sign-on for filesystem access would be nice (like Kerberized nfs.. don't know if CODA or AFS has this ootb).

There *are* going to be exceptions to the standard list of packages installed. If there aren't you'll end up with a larger package set that is the union of all requirements, or you'll end up with dissatisfied users.

Consider having a cron job that dumps a listing of installed packages into a directory on the admin server, so when that user's machine gets nuked you know what was installed there.

What "trim" said about directing all mail to a relay and disabling all unneeded daemons. But you might want to leave ssh on so you can install an extra package for someone without walking out there if need be.

First of all, braids do not equal dreadlocks. They aren't the same thing.

Second, either braids or dreads might make sense if you ran out of soap 10 years ago.

Third, in a hunter-gatherer civilization, lack of time to braid or twist up your hair is not a problem. You won't be up late at night surfing or watching the tube, so what else to do ?

What's good about the movie ? The aliens were so dumb it hinted at satire, which is quite true to the L. Ron Hubbard style.

  14. Re:You don't need any OS for that. on Making Music With Linux: We're Getting There ... · · Score: 1

Multitrack, Random Access, and editing is why you don't use DAT except for mastering, and CD burners have just about made that redundant too.

Multitrack means recording 8 or 16 or 24 or however many tracks and then mixing down (to a .wav file, with effects, all in software within the box).

Random access means instant access to any point in time during the recording. And Editing is real important too. Want to move that chunk of music around ? Just select and drag, or whatever. You get the idea.

Granted, DAT is the way to go for a 2-channel recording of a performance, but that's not studio work, that's live work.

And on another note, if you're lucky enough to have an NT workstation that is stable for several years without DisKeeper, you will be very happy you bought DisKeeper.

It was a no-brainer for MS to buy DisKeeper, or the rights to it or whatever. It's badly needed on any seriously active NT (FAT or NTFS) file system.
