Why did he die ? Poor judgement, simple as that. Sound familiar ?
I'm not a pilot but I once heard one say that he had a small weight dangling from a string above his dashboard, so that when the plane was level it was directly over a poker chip taped to the top of the dash. Prevents disorientation, he said. And hard to ignore.
re TV, there are a few good things broadcast. Like Nova, and how could I live without my nightly Jeopardy fix ? I just choke back my gorge during the car and prescription drug ads. They seem to have the most money to buy those ultra-high-priced spots. NPR is my main source of news, though.
I'm not here to criticize Katz. Doesn't doing so make you a meta-media-critic ? Your mental processes must be a rats nest of spaghetti code.
Of course, I meant of UNIX systems. It doesn't. I've been all over it up and down.
It will do either a "NORMAL" (full) or a "DAILY" which is only files changed in the current day, meaning between the start time and midnight the previous day. All the other "backup types" depend on the windows archive bit and so will always perform fulls. Try it...
No,I'm not a cognitive psychologist, but I have some real-world experience with this.
Negative transference is when some you've learned makes it harder to learn something new than if you'd never learned the first thing. It's a real phenomenon.
First, there's the muscle-memory thing. But put that aside, and you've still got problems.
Ever try to support 4 different UNIX vendors ? Some support -k to the du command, some don't. Some have "ps aux" and some have "ps -eaf". And it goes on an on. Argh!
And then there was moving from the old VMS UIS/DECwindows to the X-based DECwindows, and then to MS-windows. When you click on a menu and release, does it stay open ? Or doesn't it ?
Move from a DEC VT2xx keyboard, to a PC keyboard, and then to a Sun keyboard ? The Sun keyboard drives me nuts every time I try to use it because I've now spent some much time on PCs ! I still liked the VT52 best, although the IBM 3151 terminal has a real nice keyboard too.
I don't mean to make the teachers the scapegoats. Both of my parents were teachers.
What I mean is they should be held responsible for tolerating abuse and fostering an abusive atmosphere, just like my boss would be held responsible if he tolerated me calling my black coworker the N word or me pinching the asses of my female coworkers.
I mean they should fear this, and err on the side of zero tolerance of peer abuse
It's obvious: Nerds are Legion. So how do we hammer home this message: The social nightmare of High School is the heat under the pressure cooker ! How can we get our little forum on the CBS News ? (without hurting anyone)
just installed this over the weekend, and it does seem to work like a charm.
One gotcha, though, the Win98SE machine has to be "logged in" for it to work, it seems.
a somewhat apt analogy...
But you know, in any in-bred population, a negative-survival-value trait may also be amplified.

Another drawback of using Seagate Backup Exec is that it can't do incrementals. It just can't. My boss should have kicked my ass for recommending it.
Try it...
Even if they're not copying each other (and of course they are) they're after the same set of goals:
- lower wind resistance
- improved crashworthiness
- better visibility
So they converge on a similar design. Is it not possible that people are copying the iMAC design because it works well ?btw, I drive a VW.
You beat me to it.. Those were pretty cool terminals in 1978. Beat the heck out of VT50s.
bfd, neither do I.
I only have one decent PC and it runs NT because I have to be able to read everyone else's M$isms.
Anyone notice if they have an image available we can use to link to their site ?

and in American English, spoken by far, far, more people, "Fanny" means "buttocks".
:-)
Really, this isn't flame bait
May be. But it would get them out of the schools which is much more imporant than getting them punished.
So what's your plan for action .
Yup. Like my post says, teachers who are found to be doing this should receive swift, sure and severe punishment, monetary and administratively.
What I mean is they should be held responsible for tolerating abuse and fostering an abusive atmosphere, just like my boss would be held responsible if he tolerated me calling my black coworker the N word or me pinching the asses of my female coworkers.

Bullshit.
What I'm saying is punish behavior that is illegal already in any other venue.
Either you have zero tolerance for abuse, or you don't. Your post makes it seem you are willing to tolerate abuse.
and mandating penalties for students, teachers, administrators.
Examples:
Knocking books out of someone's arms: 5 double dententions
Making a public comment that in any way impugns another student's integrity: 5 double dententions
For a teacher, dock 2 weeks pay.
A threat of physical violence: 2 weeks suspension
Actual physical violence: 1 quarter suspension
Threat of retaliation for report of infraction:
1 year suspension
Death threat, however casual: Permanent Expulsion
Teacher or administration shown on 3 occasions to have ignored abuse: 1 quarter suspension without pay
Fuck the teacher's union. They either sign on or take a walk.
It's obvious: Nerds are Legion. So how do we hammer home this message:

Bravo...
Seen the recent L.P. article saying much the same ?
I was just looking at www.lp.org but I couldn't find it. The title was "Release: Colorado massacre".
MIT had the same problem. They called their solution Project Athena.
This is where Kerberos came from.
The idea is to keep your Kerberos Master and your administrative systems & file servers in a locked room, with a guard preferrably.
Then your users can get to your resources only if they get authenticated with Kerberos. Student-owned machines can be loaded with athena..
School-owned machines can be installed (or re-installed) with a button push and a 15 minute wait.
No user files are allowed on workstations.
etc.
