  1. Savage 2 on Linux Games For Non-Gamers? · · Score: 1

    Check out Savage 2:

    http://www.savage2.com/en/main.php

    From their FAQ:

"What is Savage? What type of game is it?

Savage is an RTS/FPS/RPG hybrid. The setting is a post-apocalyptic world where the Legion of Man and the Beast Horde battle for supremacy. There are two teams in a game of Savage2, both of which will expand to capture resources, kill enemy players and NPCs, and build up their bases to unlock new technology or magic to try to crush the enemy base. Victory is achieved in Savage 2 when you destroy the enemy command center.

Part of what makes Savage 2 unique is the role of "commander" - a unit who plays from the RTS perspective and helps organize his team's efforts to defeat the enemy. Commanders can build structures, buff allies, debuff enemies and most importantly play as master tactician with a great view of the battlefield. A lot has been done to ensure that the commander is not overpowered or able to ruin a game for his team."

It is completely free to play and has a native Linux client. The community is rather small at the moment, because it has a bit of a learning curve, but once you mastered it (and that shouldn't be a problem for any Linux user), it is one of the best multiplayer games.

Strange feeling being the only one normal left over in a crazy world, huh? This is how science can make a society sicker in one sense which is btw. totally contradictory to the increasing life expectancy we can measure. I think the only thing we can learn from this, and this could be good news, is that
It is anormal to be normal and normal to be anormal (In the statistical sense of averaging in every repect).
So better start coping with the ones being different than ourselves instead of condeming them. And maybe even realize that most of this worlds population would judge your "normal" behaviour as highly suspect, maybe even mad.

    From the introduction:
some of 22's genes can cause "heart defects, immune system disorders, cancers, schizophrenia
    and mental retardation."

Is it just me or is there not a big difference between causation and association? Seems to me along the line of correlation vs. causation. Anyway, I believe that scientists have still
a long way to go before they find the genes that cause certain disorders. And then they will still have to prove that these genes are in no way responsible for any other functions in the human body to safely alter them. Seeing all the good possible uses for medicine it still gives me the creeps how through the use of genetics and monocausal argumentation a new "scientifically backed" racism could emerge again. Now don't scream technophobe but how would you all react once the genes allegedly causing things like alcoholism, homosexuality, autism, criminalism, lazyness or whatever unwanted psychic or physical trait you can think off where identified? Have we got our ethics ready to handle this or will it be "what can be done will be done"? On whom will we test genetic engineering for a better race? The inhabitants of prisons, mental institutions, military institutions or just unwanted embryos? Will we allow babys to live with these disorders? Will we allow people to work without mandatory testing of genetic normality?
History has shown that scientists have often produced technology that was later misused by the
willing. Hopefully this time they think more before they hand this Pandoras box to the masses.

    I have to disagree.

    1. Some people think that you can gain any desired value "through the exchange of goods or services". This, to my mind, very capitalistic assumption cannot be upheld and is ultimately dangerous.
You can not always buy friends, love, beauty, time, longevity etc. Sometimes these things are just given to you, without the need to repay for the value. Remember the meaning of gift (present) as in superior ability given to you by the arbitrary mixture of your parents chromosomes.

    2. Criticizing (looks horrible that word - is it spelled correctly?) captitalism does not imply favouring communism. Actually communism and capitalism in their extremest senses have as political theories been historically disproven - think Manchester.

    3. Your idealistic presentation of the free market ( Simply put, no exchange of goods or services will occure unless both parties benefit.) is utopian. You surely must agree that there is sometimes a difference between what you consider benefitial and what would really benefit you (Ever been ripped off?). In a free market you can wonderfully benefit from other peoples stupidity. You get the money they get that happy-fuzzy feeling. You as a smart man of course would never buy the Golden Gate Bridge or "loose 20 kilos in a week through dehydration" pills. But stupid people do - and they need the same protection from the free market forces than any other weak part of a community (Of course the best protection would be making them smart but then some people would lose some status - so better stick with status symbols and social darwinism). Get into your head that the privileges you live with where first given to you and that not all men are created as equal as your free market propaganda makes you believe.

    4. To disprove your generalization of why people write Open Software. Many people write software for themselves to solve a problem they encounter. Giving the software away later on comes easy to them because they already had their benefit through solving the problem and see no reason why others should not benefit also. To believe that the only (possible) motivation for writing free software is a happy-fuzzy feeling or level of status is just plainly ignorant in light of the fact that some of the greatest free sofware was written not because some guy lacked fuzzy feelings or status but because he feeled that society as a whole lacked something. Of course you could argument that this guy indirectly gained something through the advancement of society and that this unconsciously motivated him. But I am sure he would consider this insinuating.

I seem to remember, that at least several years ago, that Germany had a three-track system based on exams.

that's correct, it's pretty dangerous compared to a system where a student on the edge can at least talk to
Admissions staff and possibly convince them otherwise.

The three track system you referr to is way before university. There are three levels of schools for children between 11 and 18. Haupt, Real and Gymnasium. Germany being a federal state where education is handled by the individual states many different implementations are existant. Generally you can say that in more conservative areas children are more separated out by performance. In other areas the parents have a big say to what schoold their kids go. Unfortunately we still see something similar as in the States here: poorer people or foreigners have a much higher percentage in the "lower" schools. But there is a big discussion going on how this can be changed and these people be more integrated. After this you have the classical three-track system: Company education mixed with further schooling (Here usually people from Haupt/Real school go), University (Fachhochschule for more practical oriented studies, Hochschule for more theoretical oriented studies) and also the Volksschule for grownups(Erwachsenenbildung). In all these ways of educating the government has alot of influence, mainly through funding. In the end we have a more widespread but at the end points no so excellent or bad education, I like it because the graphs more represent the gaussian curve (normal distribution). And again to your last point. And this is just anedoctal so no real evidence. After my family moved back to germany (1986) all of my sisters had to go back a year, cause the american education just wasn't up to par. I was lucky and got through, being a smart ass. Still I had to go to another school than the one i wanted to go to, cause i lost my latin in the States. Later on I was able to talk the principal into letting me in again, since latin was not mandatory anymore after 11th grade. Germany has grown up, people are not shunted off to other schools, but there are big efforts to pick the people up where they are and teach them how to learn not memorize.

And to get back to your point, I too think that not every person is fit for positions as CEOs or managers or marathon runners - it still surprises me though why so many CEOs have a long history of failures, yet survive in their game, while a sportsman who never wins a race will never go to the olympics.
