  1. a teacher's view... on Microsoft: Trust and Antitrust · · Score: 1

I used to train 8 hour days, breaking for lunch, 5 days a week. Web design, some SQL, etc.

It was tiring, more so for me I think than the students, but they stayed awake when they were learning something new.

So it stands that security is a new topic to the Microsoft programmers!

  2. This begs for good management tools. on Time Warner to Charge Extra for Over-Quota Bandwidth · · Score: 1

Caps on memory, bandwith, etc are nothing new...but what would be new is for these companies to develop, promote, and offer support on the use of their services. For instance, cell phones; most cell phones have an easy to access number of used minutes. If they are going to cap, then they need a real-time tool to allow the user to get to their bandwith numbers, otherwise one has to wonder where they get their results.

AOL, while awful in many ways, at least keeps track of their hours.

On the negative side, I cannot wait to pay extra to download these larger than ever ads that keep "popping up".

Charge, but add service, benefit, like a real company!

seems to do a decent job of getting rid if it and others.

These components are frightening, especially when you see the number of registry entries that are nothing more than entries for Active X (or Active Ads) components.

Sounds like this thing would be a good platform for custom apps used throughout an organization - not just the checking Outlook/to do list crowd.

Even Apple's old PDA was marketed as such, so I'm sure this is being pushed to hospitals, factories, etc.

Try driving down the road with one of those things flashing in your windshield.

  6. One to many knowledge relationship on MS: Use the Source, Luke! · · Score: 1

A valid argument against using the MS platform and languages such as C# is that learning in that enviroment creates a knowledge set that is limited to that enviroment, while learning in a more *nix type of environment encourages using multiple tools (languages) for different kinds of jobs. I've made this same argument at work, stating that I have no intention of having just VB and C# on my resume for the last couple of years, and it seemed to work. Our CS department does not do windows at all, by the way, and has no intention to do so in the near future.

Despite KDE's looks, Linux users still can choose to use something else. I cannot think of a bigger difference.

  8. this is where communication counts on It's Not About Lines of Code · · Score: 1

If one as a developer cannot show progress in a matter that can be understood by manager types, then it seems to me that managers often then lean heavily on trivial numbers, such as lines of code or made up completion dates, just so they can put it all into a report. So I think how a developer communicates to the outside world (if they are in that position) makes a huge difference on how their achievement is rated.

    3. Do some of the people that order the Perl shirts program in Perl, or do they mostly program in VB?
    4. Are women truly the majority of their purchasing audience as first guessed?
    5. Is the first thing noticed by most users on the site the first thing that comes up in the middle of the screen within one's line of sight?
    6. Do people that buy mugs also drink Dr. Enuf? Water? Milk?

There is one benefit to working temp jobs that I would suggest anyone take full advantage of - read the internal postings.

I temped in Chicago for one year during the tech boom period, and had no trouble interviewing for system support and programming work, and eventually landed one. The cool thing about this method was that I would just jot the info down while in the break room and call the next day.

While employers are looking for education / experience, they are also very well aware that some guru with ten years of background might not contribute that much more than "the temp fellow that has a decent resume, everyone seems to like, and seems to know how to brew coffee instead of leaving it for the next person to do." Or at least that is the angle I would take if I was not the guru. I just always thought of the temp work as rent payers and a good way to scope out companies I might like to work for.

I wonder if temping at an HP corporate office would have yielded a different tale?

Instead I see people waving signs, but no mention is given to their history or how those signs were written in English. News, more and more I think, just tells us mostly what we want to hear or think we would hear.

It seems to me that one of the primary purposes of advertising is to sell you things you didn't know you needed. So if advertising is so targeted that the commercials and products only reflect ones already forged tastes, then how does that help to sell more widgets? Like the news, this sounds like a way to sell us what we already know about or what we already want, and doesn't seem to lend itself to increasing sales or opening new markets.
