  1. Re:MCE for me, unfortunately on Software PVRs Becoming Tivo Killers · · Score: 2, Informative

Odd, my myth box has uptimes measured in months. It'd be longer than that, but it goes down when the power goes out (no ups) or I add new HW (drives, mostly). Also, to date I've had 1, count 'em, 1 segfault. This is starting with the 0.15 release and continuing up to the 0.18 release. Lest you think it's lightly used, it's a dual-tuner rig with an s-video input and serial connection to the cable box to record channels over 100. It records a minimumn of one show per day (daily news), but I'd say averages about 3 (news, a movie or hour-long tv show and Family Guy or something like it).

If by "ease of use," you mean the install is a pain, I totally agree. There are online guides that mitigate that as well (search for Jarod Wilson). Once it's running though, I've found it no more difficult than any other DVR or cable box I've used, and that includes MCE. Regarding integration, folks are running xboxen as frontends, though I've yet to do that myself as I'm working on using my old hauppauge mediamvp for that purpose.

Give it a second, more thorough look, I think you'll find you like it.

Ugh. Does everyone still belive that steaming load? No. Apple didn't steal the interface from Xerox. The actually gave Xerox millions of dollars of Apple stock to bring programmers through so they could get a look at what Xerox was doing. Xerox agreed to this. And why wouldn't they? PARC was in the idea game. They didn't make commercial products. Really. Go look it up. Wiki and Google are your buddies. I promise. Go now. Check for yourself.

Don't get angry, just get informed.

FYI, if you're running XP, try using 'Prefetch'. By adding 'Prefetch:1' to the "Target" entry in your firefox shortcut, like so:

    "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" /Prefetch:1

load times are greatly reduced. Note: It seems this loads the app into RAM, so don't go crazy flagging every little app with 'Prefetch' (not that it works with everything).

Huh? It's #1 on his list:

Before I can discuss electronic voting machines, I need to explain why voting is so difficult. Basically, a voting system has four required characteristics:

    1. Accuracy. The goal of any voting system is to establish the intent of each individual voter, and translate those intents into a final tally. To the extent that a voting system fails to do this, it is undesirable. This characteristic also includes security: It should be impossible to change someone else's vote, ballot stuff, destroy votes, or otherwise affect the accuracy of the final tally.

Interesting? Depends on what was in that message, doesn't it? Giving the location of soldiers and guard rotation times, while not as exciting a story, is valuable information to an invader.

Let's not pretend you're just experimenting here. It's insulting and innacurate. Some of the tenets of social experimentation, REAL social experimentation, are voluntary participation and informed consent. Further, ethical standards require that you not place your subjects at risk of harm. So, let's see:
    1. voluntary participation? Maybe, they did download it.
    2. informed consent? Not a chance.
    3. risk of harm? Definitely.
    You're at best 1 for 3, and that's not a complete list.

    Kapersky flagged your software correctly.
