  1. Windows Build Automation on Ask Slashdot: Moving From *nix To Windows Automation? · · Score: 1

Since you mention testing, I thought I should at least mention NAnt. I run a number of build servers under CruiseControl.Net that makes calls to NAnt. The NAnt scripts make calls to thing like NUnit, MSBuild, devenv and FxCop. This automates our continuous integration and release builds. There are other tools that can be thrown in like NCover. I also do automated Flex builds, but that is under Hudson. This is on Windows Server 2003 and 2008 in 32 and 64 bit versions.

As others have mentioned, PowerShell is very helpful as a replacement for your other scripting tools. Personally, I still use Perl.

Actually, there were versions of Photoshop for Unix. Of course, this was more than a few years ago (~1994). I had Solaris boxes and SGIs running Photoshop in the early and mid-90s. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adobe_Photoshop/ has some info. I was using it until at least Photoshop 3, but I think that might have been the last one with Unix support.

If you just look at the superficial evidence, there's a lot of suspicious stuff to focus on Reiser. But if you look into the details further, the affair with the S&M guy who admits to being a mass murderer, accounting irregularities in the company, you start to wonder. There have been cases in real life, not just television, where murders have been faked. I remember once case where a young man faked his death in an auto accident by substituting another body for his own and ensuring it was so badly burned that identification was impossible. It sounds like a television plot but it's real. SPOILER WARNING:
I'm pretty sure that was the plot of Fletch--except Alan Stanwyk got shot by Joe Don Baker in the end.

So yes, it sounds like a TV plot but for some reason they made it into a movie.

Injector pens like this have existed for over 15 years. I currently use a MediJector Vision. Once you've purchased the injector pen, there is an additional cost for the adaptors to go on the insulin vials. You end up using about 10% less insulin per shot. I had one of the first ones produced back in 1990 and haven't had to do a needle injection since then. It feels like a quick pinch.

My shots aren't coated in gold, though.

Google just gives me shopping links, but you can find more details at places like drugstore.com. Even though I use them, I won't pimp them here. This is the type of thing that most local drugstores don't carry, so online is about the only way to get them.

I haven't done that much .NET client side programming (mostly WebServices/ASP.NET stuff), but I did help another programmer try to embed a browser inside his app. There was no .NET HTML renderer and in order to get a browser component inside the app we had to invoke the IE DLL. This is considered an insecure call out in .NET (invoking native, non-.NET code that has to run outside the sandbox). We were able to embed IE inside the app, but the bonus was that you get all the flaws that come along with it. This may have changed since we did it about 6 months ago.

If you go through the little training movies, it gives most of the differences. I think for Wookies, the biggest is that the weapon can be charged to do a spread show if you happen to be facing more than one person. I think there is a droid that has the same ability. On the XBox, I think you just hold down the right trigger to charge and then release. Sort of like some of the MechAssault weapons.

  12. XBox Version on Star Wars Battlefront Released Today · · Score: 2, Informative

My friend and I both picked up the XBox version yesterday. I have to say, it is pretty fun. One of the best parts is shooting Ewoks and Jar Jars. We had too much fun taking them out.

I'm not too sure about the game types, but the only ones were played were Onslaught (UT2004) style games. They are pretty fun and the maps are huge.

I had some problems controlling some of the flying vehicles (X-Wings, Ties, etc.), but I'm sure it will get easier. Some of the battle areas seemed a bit too confined for flying (Cloud City maps), but other ones were great. I was actually moving toward the shield generator on the Hoth map and saw one of the AIs fly a snow speader in to take down an AT-AT with the cable. That was pretty cool from a distance.

The AI at the non-hard levels is far to easy. In order for us to actually have to work we had to kick it up as high as it would go. Just FYI.

I'm also not sure how it works if you don't have Live, but when you put in the disc, it connects immediately to Live. Not sure if it just recognizes your account and starts it up on Live or what.

We had a pretty good time playing, but had to quit to watch some poker on ESPN.

Now if I can just figure out how the heck an Ewock an kill me with one damn rock I will be happy. Lets just say that once I got my AT-ST he was toast. :)

  13. MyEclipse vs. Eclipse vs. Visual Studio on Pricing a Software Product · · Score: 3, Interesting

I think it would be interesting to look at the price
and sales of something like Eclipse vs. VisualStudio. Then if you throw MyEclipse into the mix and see how they do vs. Eclipse. MyEclipse costs about $30 and I have had no problems getting that approved from any company I've contracted for. They've even been so impressed they dropped their other IDEs and moved most of the developers over. Is $30 the right price for an IDE? Is free? Eclipse, as great as it is, can be a bit of a pain to integrate the various plugins you need to do real development. I have no problem paying $30 for that. I even bought my own copy to use at home because I like it so much.

On the flip side you have Visual Studio. That seems a bit much for an IDE. Luckily, the company I work for is also MSDN, so it isn't that much for me to get it. If I went into a company and told them I needed a copy of Visual Studio and it would cost them about $1500, I think some might not be too happy. Heck, I could probably get some places to drop MS for Java on server side development based on that cost differential alone.

It seems like the same thing is starting to happen on the Office front now--Star is cheap and Open is free and places are just starting to realize that maybe this is exactly how MS sets prices. It can't compete on cost so it ups the price to make people think it is better. Funny, but I think more and more CIO/CFOs are starting to see this.

  15. Re:Nice project on C-JDBC 1.0 Released · · Score: 1

Okay, I RTFDocs and figured out what it is doing. Selects are balanced and anything else is broadcast (including stored procs). Not a bad way to do it, but then you would need to be very aware of response times from each DB since on an update/insert it would seem that it would take as long as the slowest responding DB. No real way around that, I'm guessing. It is probably best with multiple instances of the same DB type rather than the mix-type they show in the docs, however. All of this, of course, assumes that the databases are your limiting factor and not the network or hardware. That and you get worst case performance from anything other than a select.

That whole transaction comment in this tread bothers me a bit knowing how this is working--especially the commit/rollback part of it.

    Still an interesting project, though.

  16. Nice project on C-JDBC 1.0 Released · · Score: 1

It is nice to see a project like this. Kind of odd since I was just asked to look into how to do this. It would be helpful if you had to use Tomcat, but most of the paid for servers already have something like this (e.g. MultiPools in WebLogic).

Of course it would be useless if you couldn't cluster the C-JDBC server as well--the reason you are using multiple DBs is to not have a single point of failure.

Now what I have to figure out is syncing all the databases--that would be quite a few triggers that need to be created. Or is it easier than that? I'm not a DBA, so I really don't know.

Some games even display in 1080i--I think the football titles, but I don't have any of those. Oh, I also get DD5.1 on all games.

He wrote a program to parse the log every few hours and then use the information to connect back to the attacker. He didn't do anything like stopping the process, but he did upload an app that would notify the user of what was wrong with their system and how to fix it. I think he managed to deliver the message to over a hundred machines on his first try.

This also shows the problem with these strike back programs--sure you can stop the process, but you only provided a temporary fix. I like my friend's version better in that you at least let the user know what they need to do to clean things up. After he started doing this the attacks on his cable modem subnet dropped to almost zero.
