  1. Target practice for air force/naval planes? on Studying the Impact of Lost Shipping Containers · · Score: 1

A friend of mine once told us a story about how the (Australian) air force uses lost floating shipping containers for target practice. That is, when they encounter these floating shipping containers, they fire on them to blow them up / clear the floating hazard.

Is there any truth to this or is it just an old wives tale?

An alternate interface that is just begging to be created is a SOAP interface to IMDB. Amazon has an excellent SOAP/Web Services interface; you would think they could transfer some of that knowledge to make a similarly useful interface to query IMDB using modern standards.

here is a magnet URI for those people using the Azureus bittorrent client:

With the magnet URI you don't need the torrent file. Simply copy it to the clipboard and in Azureus, go to File->Open->Location (ctrl-L) and paste the magnet URI.

Yes, but the problem is that Jurgen started at yENC. That doesn't leave much room for improvement! There's only zENC left.

If he started at aENC, he'd have a whole alphabet of versions to improve his software.

It seemed quite sluggish to me as well when I tried it, however when I ran it in DGA mode (need to be root and then run kohan --dga), it ran much smoother.

It is a hardware cursor problem..

Another reader suggested that you could use '-x -f' on the command line so try that and you may not need DGA

  11. what about computer generated speech? on IBM, TrollTech Integrate Linux Voice Recognition · · Score: 1

Partly on topic, partly off - I was wondering if there has been any progression in the last 10 or so years with computer generated speech.

My amiga 500 back in 1988 came with a speech program. Now, 10 years down the road I have yet to hear ANY computer generated speech that is mildly better or more realistic.

Frankly, all computer generated speech that I have heard sounds quite terrible. Is there any development going on in this are to make it a bit more human-like?

would like to program in my preferred language -
    ie: Java.
