Damn, you know a server needs work when its slashdotted from a comment and not even in the article.:P
something is wrong with your config. i've only gone through 1-3/4 GB and i've got a 5 GB/day cap. my site's still up. besides it's just virtual hosting, so you really won't be slashdotting the server. they'll turn my site off before it gets that bad.
Slashdot really needs better unicode/international character support. An "n" is not the same as an "n" with a tilde or even "n~".
Slashdot doesn't let you enter the pound symbol. Imagine writing about prices where every time you wanted to say $, you had to spell out dollar in order for people to know what you were talking about.
Typographic symbols like dashes, quotes and elipses are all missing.
once they start a lawsuit against john/jane doe for copyright infringement, they can subpoena the isp. this ruling just says they can't subpoena the information without it being part of an actual lawsuit.
the RIAA can still subpoena your personal info. they just are prohibited from doing so without first formally filing a lawsuit against every john/jane doe they wish to sue.
Recently I have started reporting my spam to the Internet Fraud Complaint Center (in addition to the FTC and SpamCop). Has anyone else tried filing complaints with this agency? What have your results been?
You're right. Besides with IP spoofing and false headers (From), the wrong person could be billed. A better way is all mail server use authentication and make sure the "from" corresponds to the correct person, and only forward email from servers they trust. something is very ironic about this statement coming from an anonymous coward. you couldn't be bothered with creating a user id for slashdot, yet you think a complicated web of trust user identification system needs to be implemented.
taxes won't stop criminals and scum. we already know spammers are evasive, they will just wheedle a way around the taxes the same way they wheedle into open relays and use foreign hosting.
if the government want's to do something, let them prosecute. most spammers live in the us and canada. in almost all the spamm i've ever seen their is enough fraud and misrepresentation in each email to at least bring charges in civil court with current laws.
the riaa will be filing civil claims not criminal ones. the burden of proof is on the accused, not the accuser. only extreme cases of copyright infringement are prosecuted criminally. http://www.copyright.gov/title17/
Hollywood is at it again, trying to control the design of new digital technologies. If the motion picture studios have their way, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will force all future televisions to include Hollywood-approved "content protection" technologies. Fair use, innovation and competition will suffer. What's more, the "broadcast flag" technology that the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has proposed is so weak that it will do nothing to stem Internet redistribution of television programs. In fact, the only people hurt by this are legitimate consumers, innovators and researchers.
The FCC has promised a ruling before the end of October. We need you to tell the FCC that we don't need "broadcast flag" regulations that hurt competition, consumers and innovators.
i think most of the posts here are missing something. if the chinese government is not trustworthy enough to follow the microsoft nda's, then why should we expect they would follow the gpl? if they do decide to make a home-grown linux-based os, what would require them to publish their sources? which court would you sue them in? the hague?
forget for a moment the moral implications of God playing a gambling game.
An all-knowing and all-powerful God would have no problem predicting the outcome of dice. They are physical objects governed by all the physical relationships that govern things like gravity, collisions and such.
The magnitude of the complexity of the outcome of dice seems to be too complicated for any human or machine to calculate a result.
Random outcome of dice is just a concept to help us deal with extremely complicated situations.
i guess i'm not understanding why this is a problem. currently if an insurance agent guesses you are lying or just doesn't like the sound of your voice, they are free to ask more questions about the incident to determine whether your claim is fraudulent.
this is only automating this method. really, a lie detector is not much better or worse than someone guessing whether you're lying or not.
it is not as if they are automatically pronouncing your claim as fraudulent because of the results of the lie-detector test. they are only flagging your case for a more thorough review.
there are already plenty of ways you can be scheduled for this more thorough review. like if you get in an accident with another car you own, or if you get in an accident with a relative's car and only your car is damaged but you both say they are at fault without any police report.
as i live in ohio, one of my senators (voinovich) is on this investigation subcomittee. i sent him this letter (through the online form) to encourage him to support coleman's efforts:
As you are my Senator and also on the Inquiry subcommitte that Sen. Coleman chairs, I would urge you to support his efforts.
There is plenty of room for abuse when a corporation uses legal bullying to act as law enforcement. The rights of the accused can be circumvented and innocent people can be dragged into a situation where it is very costly to defend themselves.
With the RIAA purportedly filing 75 subpoenas each day against users of online filetrading software and their Internet Service Providers for copyright infringement, there should be some level of accountability.
But really, in the end, why does it matter how many whales were hunted in the 18th century...
It matters because international treaties were signed that banned whale hunting until whale populations returned to 54% of what they were before mass whaling in the 18th century.
So if this study is correct (and there are severe doubts on its accuracy) then no whaling will be allowed for at least another 50 - 100 years.
If this study is wrong and the current numbers based on the number of whales recorded as killed by whalers is correct then some whales like the humpback may be allowed to be hunted in less than 5 years.
The biggest reason this study's results are called into question is that it uses a new method with unknown accuracy to contradict by an order of magnitude the numbers that can be arrived at by the amount of whale oil sold. the amount of whale oil sold is considered to be a very reliable number.
previously, the population was estimated by using the logbooks from the whalers. these results were generally in line with the amount of whale oil sold.
How long before some of the christians realise that the bill does nothing to combat the exchange of pornographic materials between consenting adults?
Most Christians aren't that naive. They know that kinky and perverted things go on between consenting adults every day. That doesn't mean that they want to see it. And if someone doesn't want to look at porno, why should you assault their conscience with it? Just like you wouldn't go to Egypt and start throwing sausage at every Muslim you saw.
Doesn't freedom of religion grant them the freedom to go on blocking the crud coming at them as long as they are not impinging on the rights of others?

reminds me of that old qbasic game where gorillas calculated tragectories and tried to blow each other up with bananas. occasionally my middleschool math teacher let us play that game during class. i never heard any stories about students throwing banana pipe bombs at eachother, though.
this whole thing of blaming violent activities on games is just part of an endemic problem with passing the buck. little murdurers just need to be made to face the music and be responsible for their own actions. no virtual finger pulled the trigger.
the truth may be that violent and disturbed people are drawn to violent and disturbing games. most people people who play the games have a clear grasp of what is fantasy and what is reality, but there are some who are already messed up in the head and warped games just add to the problem.
The enemy was wiped out. It retreated. When we pounded it, it went away farther. When we stop firing, they return and advance, maneuvering and establishing presence in places here and there. This aggression will end in failure. After its destruction, Iraq will remain and it will be led by President Saddam Hussein."
that's exactly what i want. i have been waiting for someone to sell me ford-approved music. or do you think they would actually let you choose which songs they would sell you. no, this would be one ten-hour disk for everyone. i'm sure they'll be enough songs for everyone to hate.

Does it allow me to copy money? I hear programs like this are in short supply. :)

I copied some currency with the GIMP recently. No problems at all.

much better than blacklists and captcha is a bayesian filter.
blacklists are innaccurate: blacklisted words can be misspelled and pass through.
captcha discriminates against the disabled and cuts them off from online discussions.
James Seng has crafted a good bayesian filter for movable type.

The bulk of spam is in english

i only speak english.

all that will happen is people will start to use more secure filesharing apps like EarthStation 5.
Actually, ES5 has so many security features the setup can be overwhelming to the average joe. So I wrote up a journal spelling out the important stuff.

Mohammed Saeed Sahhaf continues to make claims that are just as wacky:
probably economists are just simplifing the mathmatical property that the limit of x divided by y as y approaches zero is infinity.

since everyone has figured out how to block the ads, are the editors turning to a new form of revenue? articles that are really just ads?
